Chapter 10 - STRANGERS AT THE GATE

The supermarket still bore scars from the battle with the bone‑armored beast. Walls cracked, shelves toppled, and the faint smell of scorched flesh lingered in the air. Sun Jun and Lin Yue had barely recovered, their bodies aching, their minds heavy with exhaustion. Yet the silence of the ruins was broken not by the guttural moans of zombies, but by something far more unsettling—human voices.

Rough, desperate, armed.

Sun Jun stiffened, his senses sharpening. Lin Yue crouched low, her knife in hand, eyes narrowing. Through the shattered doorway, five figures stumbled in, their clothes torn, their faces gaunt with hunger. At their head was a burly man with a scar across his cheek, his eyes sharp despite his weariness. He carried a rusted machete, and the others clutched makeshift weapons—pipes, bats, a broken rifle with no bullets.

"We mean no harm," the man said, his voice gravelly. "My name is Chen Wei. We've been starving for days. Please… food."

The plea hung heavy in the air. Sun Jun's heart tightened. His system could conjure endless supplies, but Lin Yue's warning echoed in his mind: If others find out, they'll kill you for it. He hesitated, torn between compassion and caution.

Lin Yue's gaze flicked to him, sharp as a blade. She said nothing, but her eyes spoke volumes. Be careful.

Sun Jun nodded subtly. He reached into his pack, pulling out a small share—cans, crackers, a bottle of water. He placed them on the ground, hiding the source. "It's not much," he said evenly. "But it should help."

Chen Wei's eyes lingered on him, suspicion flickering. He accepted the food, his men devouring it with desperate hands. Yet his gaze never left Sun Jun, as though he sensed something hidden beneath the surface.

---

That night, the supermarket was quiet again, but unease lingered. Lin Yue sat close to the fire, her voice low. "They'll come back," she whispered. "And they'll want more."

Sun Jun stared into the flames, electricity humming faintly beneath his skin. "I know."

"They saw strength in you," she continued. "Not just food. Chen Wei's eyes… he's calculating. He'll test us."

Sun Jun exhaled slowly. "Then we'll be ready."

---

Days passed. The survivors returned, their hunger unabated. Chen Wei spoke politely, but his tone carried weight. "You saved us once. We're grateful. But we can't survive on scraps. If you have more, share it. We're stronger together."

Sun Jun's jaw tightened. He offered another small share, careful to mask the system's origin. Yet Chen Wei's suspicion grew. His men whispered, their eyes darting toward Sun Jun's pack, toward the barricades Lin Yue had built. They saw abundance where there should have been scarcity.

Lin Yue's traps caught their glances, her presence a silent warning. She moved like a shadow, her knife gleaming, her eyes cold. Sun Jun knew she was ready to strike if they crossed the line. But tension simmered, fragile as glass.

---

One evening, Chen Wei lingered after his men had eaten. He stepped closer, his voice low. "You're hiding something."

Sun Jun's muscles tensed. "What do you mean?"

Chen Wei's gaze was sharp. "No one has food like this. No one survives like this. You have a secret. And secrets… don't stay hidden."

Sun Jun met his stare, electricity flickering faintly in his eyes. "Be careful what you assume."

Chen Wei smirked, but his eyes were cold. "We'll see."

---

That night, Lin Yue whispered again, her voice urgent. "He knows. Or at least, he suspects. If he learns the truth, he'll take it. And he won't care what happens to us."

Sun Jun clenched his fists, the storm within him restless. "Then we protect it. Whatever it takes."

Lin Yue nodded, her expression grim. "Trust is fragile. And strangers at the gate… are dangerous."

--

The supermarket became a fortress once more, not against zombies, but against humans. Sun Jun and Lin Yue reinforced barricades, set new traps, sharpened weapons. The air grew tense, heavy with anticipation. Chen Wei's group lingered nearby, their eyes always watching, their hunger always gnawing. The line between ally and enemy blurred, fragile as the walls that held them.

Sun Jun felt the weight of his system more than ever. It was salvation, but it was also curse. To share was to risk betrayal. To hide was to risk suspicion. And in this world, suspicion was deadly.

Yet beside him, Lin Yue stood firm, her presence steady. Together, they had faced monsters. Together, they would face men. And in that fragile alliance, Sun Jun felt something stronger than fear.

Hope. But hope tempered by vigilance.

---

The fire crackled, shadows dancing across broken walls. Sun Jun stared into the flames, his mind heavy. Chen Wei's words echoed: Secrets don't stay hidden. He knew the truth. The storm within him was not just power—it was responsibility. And in a world where hunger ruled, responsibility was dangerous.

Lin Yue's hand brushed his arm, grounding him. "We'll endure," she said softly. "We always do."

Sun Jun looked at her, electricity flickering faintly in his eyes. "Together."

---

Outside, the night was quiet. But the gate was never truly safe. Strangers had come, and they would return. And when they did, Sun Jun and Lin Yue would be ready.
