Chapter 1 - Anslie Vickery

was but a small, meek woman. But desperation will drive any woman to insanity.

She ran with the speed of a woman with health twice as good as hers. Blood

rushed out of the open wound across her forehead. She'd prayed to the Golden Goddesses above that she could find a safe haven for her son and herself, but every minute ticked by, taking her closer and closer to he death.

What could she do? She hadn't had any other choice. Hyrule proper wasn't safe, especially for her newborn son. Her husband lay dead in the streets with hundreds of other soldiers, and she was close enough to her own demise.

All she knew was that she had to get her son to safety.

She blindly stumbled through the woods until she found herself staring at an impossibly huge tree. She gaped, trying to comprehend its size.

"You are a Hylian adult," the tree spoke. "State your business here." She felt consciousness slipping away from her. She weakly held her son outward. "My son," she gasped.

The tree's expression softened as well as a tree's could. "I am the Great Deku Tree, guardian of the Kokiri. And you need my help, I can see."

"Just... my son... please..." she panted. She collapsed onto the grass, clutching at her side as blood continued to pour down her face.

"I'm so sorry that the war has affected you," the Great Deku Tree whispered remorsefully. A single large leaf floated down from the air and wrapped itself around her son. "I'll protect him. He will have a good life here."

She fell onto her back. Her lungs were failing her. She felt lightheaded, and her skin was snow white from the loss of blood. Despite being unable to breathe, she spoke these last words: "thank... you," she breathed. And with one final gasp, she slipped from the earth.

The Great Deku tree stood in silence in reverence for the now-dead woman. He lifted the sleeping kid gently into the air using his magic. He sighed, knowing what was coming for the baby. "You need a name..." he mused. "You'll be the link to today and tomorrow..." The Great Deku Tree smiled sadly. "Link," he whispered. "Your name is Link."

And the little baby slept softly, unaware of the fate that awaited him.
