Chapter 75 - Adaptive Combat Exercise

The western combat arena dwarfed every training ground Kai had fought in before.

Massive reinforced walls encircled the battlefield.

Observation platforms rose in layers above them, packed with students, instructors, academy directors, and invited officials.

Protective barriers shimmered faintly around the arena's perimeter.

This wasn't a classroom exercise.

It was a demonstration.

The five mixed-academy teams entered through separate gates.

Kai adjusted the grip on his sword as he stepped into the arena.

Around him walked the same team he'd worked with throughout the evaluation.

Lena.

Eva.

Darius.

Rylan.

No one spoke immediately.

The atmosphere didn't need words.

Across the arena, several enormous steel gates remained closed.

Behind them came deep, rhythmic impacts.

Heavy.

Measured.

Alive.

Marcus whistled from another team's staging area.

"They're definitely not bringing rabbits out."

A few nearby students laughed.

Even some instructors hid small smiles.

The Rules

A senior instructor stepped onto the central platform.

His voice carried effortlessly through the arena.

"Adaptive Combat Exercise."

He allowed the words to settle.

"You are not being judged on how quickly you defeat your opponents."

Several participants exchanged surprised looks.

"You are not being judged on individual strength."

Another pause.

"You are being judged on adaptation, teamwork, battlefield judgment, and casualty prevention."

The massive screens lit up.

Evaluation Categories:

Combat Coordination

Threat Assessment

Civilian Protection Simulation

Energy Management

Tactical Adaptation

Team Survival

Kai noticed something.

There wasn't a category for kill count.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Opponent One

The first gate slowly opened.

A massive four-legged beast emerged.

Its body resembled an oversized mountain wolf.

Stone-like armor covered its shoulders and spine.

Long claws carved shallow trenches into the reinforced arena floor.

Several students in the audience immediately leaned forward.

Darius smiled.

"Finally."

Eva sighed.

"Please don't charge."

"I wasn't going to."

He paused.

"…Immediately."

Rylan chuckled.

Lena shook her head.

Kai studied the beast instead.

Its movements.

Breathing.

Weight distribution.

Hybrid Vision activated.

The beast's muscles shifted beneath its armored hide.

Tiny details became clearer.

It favored its right foreleg.

Old injury.

Not serious.

Useful.

First Engagement

The instructor lowered his arm.

"Begin."

The beast exploded forward.

Fast.

Much faster than its size suggested.

Instead of rushing to meet it—

Darius stepped sideways.

The enormous claws smashed into empty ground.

Stone shattered.

Dust erupted.

Kai immediately understood.

Good.

Darius wasn't trying to overpower it.

He was redirecting it.

Growth.

Real growth.

Lena moved simultaneously.

A burst of wind mana struck the beast's flank.

Not enough to injure it.

Enough to change its balance.

Eva called out calmly.

"Three steps left."

Kai moved without hesitation.

The beast turned toward Lena.

Exactly as planned.

Its injured foreleg bore too much weight.

Kai struck once.

Not the head.

Not the body.

The weakened joint.

Steel collided against stone-like hide.

The impact echoed across the arena.

The beast stumbled.

Only slightly.

Still enough.

Rylan reacted instantly.

He threw two compact restraint anchors.

Chains of reinforced energy wrapped around the beast's rear legs for less than a second.

Not enough to hold it.

Enough to interrupt its recovery.

Darius stepped in.

One powerful strike slammed into the creature's shoulder.

The beast roared.

Instead of collapsing—

it retreated several steps.

Interesting.

It had recognized the danger.

Adaptation

The creature changed tactics.

It stopped attacking wildly.

Instead—

it circled.

Watching.

Learning.

Several spectators murmured.

The academy beasts weren't mindless.

They adapted.

Just like hunters had to.

Kai slowly adjusted his stance.

The synchronization core remained quiet.

No notifications.

Good.

He didn't need the system telling him what was already obvious.

The beast's attention kept shifting.

Between all five teammates.

Searching for weakness.

Rylan spoke quietly.

"It's testing responses."

Eva nodded.

"So we stop giving predictable ones."

Rotation

Without discussing it further—

the team naturally rotated positions.

Kai drifted toward the left.

Darius became the visible frontline.

Lena maintained pressure from range.

Eva coordinated spacing.

Rylan watched everything.

The beast lunged toward Darius.

At the last moment—

Darius didn't counterattack.

He withdrew.

The creature overcommitted.

Kai intercepted from the side.

One clean strike.

Again targeting the damaged foreleg.

Not flashy.

Not devastating.

Effective.

The beast's movement became slower.

Lena capitalized immediately.

Compressed wind exploded beneath its front legs.

The creature lost balance.

Rylan's restraint anchors activated again.

This time—

both rear legs.

Only for a heartbeat.

Long enough.

Darius drove the flat of his greatsword into the beast's armored shoulder.

Instead of slicing—

he pushed.

The massive creature rolled sideways.

The instructor watching from above made a note.

No excessive force.

No unnecessary risk.

Excellent teamwork.

Other Arenas

Elsewhere, the remaining Great 17 were also proving why they'd earned their ranks.

Marcus's team faced two agile feline beasts.

Rather than charging ahead—

Marcus deliberately held the center.

Protecting weaker teammates while waiting for openings.

One Iron Vanguard instructor folded his arms approvingly.

"Better discipline."

Victor's battlefield looked entirely different.

His team fought three smaller beasts simultaneously.

No one seemed rushed.

Every movement had purpose.

By the end of the engagement, each beast had been isolated before being defeated.

Efficiency over spectacle.

Sylas fought beside students from two different academies.

He barely attacked at all.

Instead—

he quietly positioned teammates where they needed to be.

The final blow belonged to someone else.

Sylas didn't seem to mind.

Final Phase

Back in Kai's arena—

the beast breathed heavily.

Its movements had slowed considerably.

Not because one powerful attack had ended the fight.

Because dozens of correct decisions had accumulated.

Kai noticed the opening first.

"The shoulder."

Darius understood immediately.

He didn't attack.

He forced the beast to turn.

Lena's wind pushed from the opposite direction.

Eva called timing.

"Now."

Kai stepped forward.

One precise strike landed beneath the shoulder plate.

The creature staggered.

Rylan's restraints activated one final time.

The beast lowered itself.

Not dead.

Unable to continue.

A loud signal echoed across the arena.

"Engagement Complete."

The audience applauded.

Not because the fight had been spectacular.

Because it had been intelligent.

Evaluation

As the team exited the arena, instructors compared notes.

One official from Northern Citadel spoke first.

"They communicated without over-communicating."

An Iron Vanguard evaluator nodded.

"No wasted movement."

An Eclipse observer added quietly,

"They adapted to each other faster than to the beast."

Director Rowan listened without commenting.

His eyes briefly followed Kai as he left the arena.

Then moved to the rest of the team.

Exactly as they should.

Because today hadn't been about one exceptional student.

It had been about five capable hunters becoming stronger together.

And that—

more than any single victory—

was what the Inter-Academy Evaluation had been designed to measure.

As the afternoon sun settled over the academy, students began preparing for the evening's final event.

The Academy Exchange Forum.

For the first time since the evaluation began…

Words, ideas, and experiences would matter more than swords.

And sometimes—

those conversations changed futures more than battles ever could.
