Chapter 73 - Questions Without Answers

The final system message remained suspended in Kai's vision.

WARNING

One of the Six may still be alive.

It stayed there for several seconds.

Then slowly dissolved.

Kai didn't immediately speak.

Neither did Director Rowan.

The three observers remained unusually still.

The silence wasn't uncomfortable.

It was analytical.

Each person in the room seemed to be considering the implications from a different perspective.

Kai finally looked up.

"You've seen that expression before."

It wasn't a question.

Rowan nodded once.

"I have."

"The warning."

Another nod.

"It appeared in one surviving record."

Interesting.

Not the exact message.

The reaction to it.

The silver-haired woman stepped toward one of the bookshelves lining the office.

She removed a weathered journal.

Its leather binding had faded with age.

She carefully opened it.

Several pages were filled with elegant handwriting.

Others were damaged beyond recognition.

She stopped near the center.

"The surviving account wasn't written by the convergence point."

Kai listened.

"It was written by someone who traveled with him."

She handed the journal across the desk.

Most of the page had deteriorated.

Only scattered passages remained.

Kai read them silently.

"He never stopped asking questions."

A missing section.

"He refused to believe destiny couldn't be changed."

Another gap.

"The system showed him things none of us could see."

More missing text.

"When the warning appeared…"

The sentence ended there.

The remainder of the page had been destroyed.

Kai looked back up.

"That's all."

The woman nodded.

"That's all history left us."

A Different Kind of Test

The military officer walked toward a large tactical table.

He activated it.

Instead of battle maps—

personnel records appeared.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

Students.

Hunters.

Commanders.

Researchers.

The display continued expanding.

Until thousands of names filled the room.

Kai studied it.

"What am I looking at?"

The officer rested both hands on the table.

"Influence."

He selected one name.

A network of connections spread outward.

Friends.

Mentors.

Subordinates.

Allies.

One decision.

Hundreds of consequences.

The officer looked toward Kai.

"Power changes battles."

A pause.

"Influence changes generations."

The room fell quiet again.

Kai understood.

This wasn't about becoming stronger.

Not anymore.

The academy had already accepted that he would continue growing.

The question was what kind of person he would become while doing it.

Director Rowan spoke.

"That is the evaluation."

A Walk Across Campus

An hour later, Kai left the administration tower.

The afternoon sun hung low above the academy.

Students moved between classes.

The familiar rhythm of campus life continued.

Normal.

Ordinary.

It felt strange after everything that had happened.

Kai walked without a destination.

Sometimes movement helped organize thoughts.

Today's thoughts needed organizing.

Convergence.

The Six.

The missing hunter.

The warning.

None of it fit together yet.

He reached one of the academy gardens.

Quiet.

Mostly empty.

A few students sat reading beneath the trees.

Others reviewed notes before evening lectures.

Kai stopped near a stone bridge crossing a narrow stream.

The water flowed steadily beneath it.

Unhurried.

Constant.

"You disappeared."

Kai turned.

Lena approached from the opposite side of the bridge.

She carried several books beneath one arm.

Apparently she'd come from the library.

"I had a meeting."

She studied him for a moment.

"I figured."

A light breeze moved through the trees.

Neither hurried the conversation.

Lena rested her books on the bridge railing.

"You seem different."

Kai almost laughed.

"You're not the first person to say that."

She smiled slightly.

"Maybe they're right."

Ordinary Conversation

For a while they spoke about ordinary things.

The evaluation.

The mixed teams.

Marcus accidentally breaking a practice weapon earlier that morning.

Apparently he'd insisted the weapon was defective.

The instructor had disagreed.

Strongly.

Kai listened.

The conversation felt… normal.

Comfortable.

A useful reminder that not every moment needed hidden meanings.

Eventually Lena looked toward the administration tower.

"They called you there."

Kai nodded.

"Was it bad?"

He considered the question.

"No."

"Good?"

"I'm not sure yet."

She accepted that answer without pressing further.

Instead, she looked out across the stream.

"My grandmother used to say something."

Kai waited.

"'When life becomes confusing, pay attention to the people who stay beside you instead of the noise around you.'"

A thoughtful silence settled between them.

Kai found himself remembering the words.

Not because they answered anything.

Because they felt worth remembering.

The Others

Elsewhere across the academy, the rest of the Great 17 continued preparing.

Marcus spent the afternoon in the combat arena.

Not fighting beasts.

Sparring.

Learning.

Improving his footwork after repeated criticism from one of the instructors.

Victor occupied a strategy room with several visiting students from Northern Citadel.

Instead of competing—

they debated historical campaigns.

Neither side agreed on very much.

Both clearly enjoyed the discussion.

Sylas wandered through the forge district.

Not looking for weapons.

Talking with craftsmen.

Examining unusual materials.

Asking questions that made experienced blacksmiths pause before answering.

Aiden trained alone.

As always.

Yet several younger students quietly watched from a respectful distance.

Not because he demanded attention.

Because excellence naturally attracted it.

The Great 17 weren't simply hunters.

They were beginning to become examples.

Each in their own way.

Evening Announcement

As sunset painted the academy in shades of gold and crimson, every communicator activated simultaneously.

INTER-ACADEMY EVALUATION

Day Two Schedule

Event One:

Strategic Command Rotation

Event Two:

Adaptive Combat Exercise

Event Three:

Academy Exchange Forum

Students across campus immediately began discussing the final item.

A forum?

That wasn't combat.

It wasn't strategy.

It sounded…

different.

Kai looked at the schedule again.

Interesting.

The academy wasn't only testing strength.

It wanted its students to learn from one another.

Or perhaps—

to reveal themselves through conversation as much as through battle.

Either possibility made sense.

Nightfall

Darkness gradually settled across the campus.

Lights illuminated walkways.

Training grounds slowly emptied.

The academy grew quieter.

Kai stood outside his residence for a few moments before going inside.

The system hadn't spoken since leaving Director Rowan's office.

No warnings.

No quests.

No mysterious messages.

Just silence.

For now.

Far away, inside the highest office of the administration tower, Director Rowan stood alone.

The old journal still rested on his desk.

He looked at its damaged pages one final time.

Then quietly closed it.

"The seventh…"

he murmured.

"…this time, perhaps we'll finally learn the ending."
