Chapter 63 - The Gathering of Seventeen

The Strategic Operations Hall was one of the oldest buildings on campus.

Unlike the training arenas or modern lecture complexes, it carried a different atmosphere.

History.

Purpose.

Weight.

Kai arrived a few minutes early.

As expected, he wasn't the first.

Victor was already there.

Standing beside a large tactical display.

Reviewing information.

Naturally.

"You came early."

Victor didn't look up.

Kai glanced at the display.

"You're working."

Victor finally smirked.

"Aren't I always?"

That was difficult to argue with.

A few minutes later, others began arriving.

Marcus entered first.

Followed by Sylas.

Then several members of the Great 17 Kai rarely interacted with directly.

Each possessed a different presence.

Different specialties.

Different reputations.

Yet all of them shared one thing.

They were among the academy's strongest students.

Eventually the room filled.

Sixteen.

Then seventeen.

Aiden arrived last.

Not because he was late.

Because everyone stopped talking when he entered.

The effect wasn't forced.

It simply happened.

Rank One.

Even after all these months, that position carried weight.

Aiden walked calmly toward the center of the room.

The massive tactical projection behind him activated.

Several unfamiliar academy crests appeared.

Conversations stopped immediately.

The briefing had begun.

The Other Academies

Aiden folded his arms.

"The Inter-Academy Evaluation is not new."

The projection shifted.

Several years of historical data appeared.

"Most students know it exists."

A pause.

"Few understand its purpose."

The display changed again.

Instead of rankings—

it showed casualty reports.

Mission outcomes.

Recovery rates.

The room became quieter.

Aiden continued.

"The event was created after a series of failed cross-regional operations."

More data appeared.

Teams from different academies.

Different doctrines.

Different training philosophies.

Failure rates.

Poor coordination.

Communication breakdowns.

Leadership conflicts.

People dying.

Nobody spoke.

The reality behind the event suddenly became much clearer.

Aiden looked across the room.

"When large-scale threats emerge, academies cooperate."

The projection zoomed outward.

Large portions of the continent appeared.

"Future hunters will eventually operate together."

His gaze hardened slightly.

"This event evaluates whether that future is possible."

The room remained silent.

Because suddenly it didn't feel like a competition anymore.

It felt important.

Six Academies

The first crest enlarged.

A silver tower surrounded by wings.

"The Northern Citadel Academy."

Several students immediately recognized the name.

Aiden nodded.

"They produce some of the continent's best defensive specialists."

Another crest appeared.

A crimson blade.

"The Iron Vanguard Institute."

Marcus visibly perked up.

A few people noticed.

Aiden noticed too.

The faintest smile appeared.

"They favor direct combat."

Marcus looked entirely too interested.

Victor sighed.

"Of course they do."

Several students laughed.

Even Marcus didn't deny it.

The next crest emerged.

A black star.

"The Eclipse Academy."

The atmosphere shifted slightly.

Even Kai noticed.

Interesting.

Aiden continued.

"Known for reconnaissance."

Another pause.

"Intelligence gathering."

A longer pause.

"Information warfare."

Now the room understood.

Those were dangerous specialties.

Not because they were stronger.

Because they knew things.

The remaining academies followed.

Different strengths.

Different reputations.

Different philosophies.

Each presented unique challenges.

And opportunities.

The Selection Process

Once the introductions ended, the projection changed again.

This time displaying multiple categories.

Combat.

Strategy.

Resource Recovery.

Leadership.

Adaptive Response.

Joint Operations.

Several students frowned.

One of them finally asked.

"Are all seventeen of us participating?"

Aiden nodded.

"Yes."

The room relaxed slightly.

Then Aiden added:

"Not all of you will participate in every evaluation."

The relaxation disappeared.

Immediately.

Several people exchanged looks.

Now things became interesting.

The projection divided itself into groups.

Specialists.

Different events would require different strengths.

Victor studied the display.

"Performance-based assignments."

Aiden nodded.

"Correct."

The Great 17 wouldn't simply compete.

They would represent the academy where they were most effective.

No wasted talent.

No unnecessary assignments.

Efficiency.

Kai could already see Victor analyzing potential team compositions.

Probably calculating probabilities.

Possibly calculating everyone else's probabilities too.

Something Unusual

The briefing continued for another hour.

Most of it focused on preparation.

Expectations.

Protocols.

Nothing surprising.

Until the very end.

That was when a faculty member entered.

Not an instructor.

Not an administrator.

Someone Kai had never seen before.

The room immediately became alert.

Even Aiden stepped aside.

Interesting.

The newcomer wore dark academy attire.

Simple.

Unremarkable.

Except for one thing.

The room instinctively respected him.

Not through authority.

Through presence.

He stopped beside the tactical display.

His eyes swept across the seventeen students.

For a moment—

they paused on Kai.

Only briefly.

But Kai noticed.

The man finally spoke.

"Most of you know me as Director Rowan."

The room straightened instantly.

The Academy Director.

Very few students ever met him directly.

Yet here he was.

Addressing them personally.

That alone meant something.

Director Rowan looked at the Great 17.

"The upcoming evaluation matters."

Simple words.

But they carried weight.

Not because of volume.

Because of certainty.

"You will be observed."

The room remained silent.

"Not only by academies."

Several students frowned.

Director Rowan continued.

"Organizations."

A few surprised expressions appeared.

"Hunter divisions."

More.

"Research groups."

The room became even quieter.

Then—

"Government representatives."

Now everyone's attention was locked on him.

Because suddenly the event had become much larger than they imagined.

Future opportunities.

Recruitment.

Recognition.

Entire careers could change.

Director Rowan folded his hands behind his back.

"But that is not why I am telling you this."

The room listened.

"Impressing observers is easy."

A pause.

"Remaining yourself while being observed is difficult."

Nobody spoke.

Because that statement felt aimed at everyone.

Including Kai.

Perhaps especially Kai.

Threshold

The briefing finally ended.

Students began leaving.

Talking quietly.

Discussing possibilities.

Predictions.

Marcus was already talking about potential combat specialists from Iron Vanguard.

Victor looked annoyed.

Sylas looked entertained.

Nothing unusual there.

Kai headed toward the exit.

Then stopped.

A familiar sensation.

Hybrid Vision.

A pulse.

Brief.

Strange.

His perception sharpened instinctively.

The hallway.

The walls.

The students.

The lingering energy signatures.

Then—

Director Rowan.

Standing alone near the far side of the chamber.

Watching.

Not the room.

Kai.

Only for a second.

Their eyes met.

The Director smiled slightly.

Not surprised.

Almost…

expecting it.

Then he turned and walked away.

The moment ended.

But something remained.

A feeling.

As if another piece of a larger puzzle had just moved into place.

A system notification appeared.

CONDITIONAL EVENT DETECTED

Observation Level Increased

Unknown Evaluation Active

Requirements: Hidden

Rewards: Hidden

The message vanished.

Kai stood still.

For the first time since entering the academy—

the system had acknowledged someone else's involvement.
