The food was bread, hard cheese, and something that had been a soup earlier in the day and was now a cold, thick paste that he ate without complaint. He was hungrier than he'd realized. Sera watched him the way a person watches something they're not sure about yet and have decided to let run a little longer before making a judgment.
He set the bowl down.
"What was I?" he asked.
She turned toward the window. Outside, the village had gone quiet. One dog somewhere, intermittent. The fire in the hearth had dropped to coals and she hadn't built it back up, which meant this was a conversation she wanted contained.
"You came here about a year ago," she said. "From the east, you said. You didn't say much about before that. You never did." She paused. "You did work for people. Copying documents, writing letters, reading contracts for people who couldn't read them well enough. The Valdenen family has a land dispute with the crown that's been running for eleven years and you'd been helping them build the case."
"A scribe."
"You didn't like that word. You said scribes copied. You said you did something else." The corner of her mouth moved. "You never said what you'd call it instead."
He turned that over. A man who lived on knowledge and precision, who drew distinctions about what kind of knowledge and how precise. That tracked against the calluses. Against the way his hands moved when he was thinking, too. He'd noticed it during the walk, fingers moving slightly, as though writing on something that wasn't there.
"The tower," he said. "Why did I go?"
Sera was quiet for a moment. Not reluctance, exactly. More like she was selecting what to say from a larger body of available things to say, and the selection was careful.
"You'd been asking about it for months. Old records, mostly. You found something in the Valdenen papers. Their land runs close to the tower's foundation, the old legal boundary descriptions mention it. You copied out every reference. You got interested." She looked at him. "I told you to leave it alone."
"What did I say?"
"You said you just wanted to look at the construction."
He almost smiled. That was true, he suspected, and also incomplete in a way he recognized as characteristic.
"Did I find what I was looking for? In the records."
"I don't know what you were looking for. You didn't tell me that either." She sat back. "You were careful about what you told people. Not secretive. Just careful. There's a difference."
There was. He filed that as a description of himself and noted the slight friction of it, the way it sat against the person Sera was talking to right now, who had been honest about the memory loss from the first moment because dishonesty required a clear model of the situation and he hadn't had one. Maybe that was the difference. Calder had been careful because he'd had enough context to know what to be careful about. He didn't have that context anymore.
"Bram," he said.
Sera's expression shifted, slightly. "What about him."
"What was I to him."
She looked at the fire. "His father died three winters ago. Fever, fast. Bram was twelve." A pause. "You taught him letters. You let him sit in when you worked. He's quick, quicker than he should be at that age, and you were the only person around here with the patience to let him be quick." She said it simply, without sentiment, the way you described a fact about geography. "He'd have gone to Anshem by now if his mother could spare him."
He looked at his hands. Twelve years old, father gone, and someone who'd let him be what he was. The weight of what Bram had stood in that courtyard ready to do made more sense now. He was not sure what to do with the sense it made.
"The wound," he said. "Someone cleaned it."
"I know."
"Was anyone else there? Anyone who would have gone in."
Sera was quiet for a moment. Something moved in her expression, brief and contained. "No one went in, Calder. I would have heard."
He nodded. He believed her. Which meant the wound had been cleaned inside the tower, by something that had been inside the tower, and the possibilities that left him with were not comfortable ones. He put them aside. Insufficient data. Nothing useful came from sitting with discomfort he couldn't give a shape to yet.
"I need to go to Anshem," he said.
She looked at him. The brief thing in her expression came back, settled into something more deliberate. "I know that too." She stood and took his bowl to the basin. "The Valdenen papers are in a crate under your bed. Your bed is the back room, you've been renting it from us since you arrived." She didn't look at him. "Your notes are there too. Everything you were working on before you went to the tower."
He stayed still for a moment.
"You kept my room," he said.
"You paid three months ahead." She said it to the basin. "The third month isn't up yet."
A pause. He watched her back, the set of her shoulders, the way she was being very deliberate about the bowl.
"Sera. Is there something about Anshem I should know before I go."
She didn't turn around. "There's a great deal about Anshem you should know before you go. Most of it you already know, somewhere." She set the bowl down. "Be careful with the Conclave. Don't ask about the tower in public. And don't use my name with anyone there." She said it simply, without drama, the way you say a thing you've been carrying for a while and have decided to put down.
He didn't ask why. There would be time for that. He filed it alongside the three months paid ahead and stood up.
The back room was small and smelled of tallow and paper. A narrow bed, a writing table, two shelves built into the wall with pegs below them. A wool coat hung on one peg. A second, smaller crate beside the larger one with a latch on it.
He stood in the doorway with the candle Sera had given him and looked at it.
These were the physical residue of a person he didn't remember being. The coat would fit him, he knew, without trying it. The writing table had been moved to catch the window light, which was how he would have moved it. A small wooden cup held four pens, worn differently depending on the grip they'd been held in. He picked up the most worn one and held it and his hand found a position without searching for it.
He set the pen down and opened the larger crate.
The Valdenen papers were on top. Below them, bound in cloth: his own notes. He lifted these out and set them on the table and opened them under the candle.
The handwriting was his. He knew it immediately, the same way he'd known the pen. Small, dense, organized in a way that used the page efficiently. He read through the first several pages and felt the odd sensation of understanding his own thinking from the outside, the way you might read a letter you'd written years ago to someone else. Recognizing the reasoning, following it, but unable to recover the specific moment of having thought it.
The notes were about the tower.
Not just about its construction, though there was that. Sketches, measurements, the kind of systematic observation that had been described on the page and was recognizable to him now as the shape his attention took. Beneath that were copies of the boundary descriptions from the Valdenen papers, with sections underlined, and next to those a series of calculations whose purpose he couldn't immediately parse. He read them twice. The third time he saw what they were: he'd been trying to determine when the tower was built, using the legal language in the boundary descriptions as a reference point, working backward from how the descriptions changed over successive documents to find the point at which the tower first appeared.
The answer he'd arrived at was underlined twice.
Before the Interdict. Pre-Conclave. Possibly significantly pre-Conclave.
Beneath that, in smaller handwriting, as though written more quickly: Who was watching, and what were they watching for.
He sat with that for a long time.
Then he turned to the last pages of notes, the most recent ones. These were different. Less organized, the writing slightly larger, like it had been done fast or in poor light. He read through them and found that he'd apparently spent the weeks before entering the tower trying to find a specific name: the person, or institution, or order, that had built the tower in the first place. He'd found references in three separate sources to something called the Warden's work, always in passing, always in documents about something else, always in language that treated it as assumed knowledge not worth explaining.
The Warden. No further identification. No other name.
He closed the notes and looked at the wall for a moment.
Then he unlatched the smaller crate.
Inside, wrapped in cloth: a small collection of objects that he must have considered worth keeping separate from the papers. A coin from a mint he didn't recognize. Two pieces of broken tile, painted with a geometric pattern in blue and ochre. A folded letter, the seal broken, that he opened and read.
The letter was from someone in Anshem. It was short. It said: I have found what you asked about. I will not put it in a letter. Come when you can.
It was signed with an initial only. V.
No date. No address. No further information about what he had asked about.
He folded it and put it in the breast pocket of his coat and went to bed.
In the morning Bram was at the door before Sera had finished making the fire.
He stood in the entrance with the specific energy of a person who has been awake for some time and has spent that time deciding not to come earlier. He was looking at Calder with the sharp watchfulness that seemed to be his resting expression, and beneath it something more careful.
"You don't remember," he said. Not a question.
"Not much."
Bram nodded. He came inside without being invited, which meant he was accustomed to coming inside without being invited, and sat on the stool by the fire. He looked at the floor for a moment.
"What do you remember?"
"Skills," Calder said. "No stories. I know how to read a forest. I know how to move without making noise. I know when a building was built for watching rather than defending." He paused. "I remember your name and Sera's. Not from before. From last night. The walk back."
Bram was quiet.
"I read the notes," Calder said. "The ones in the crate. I know what I was working on before I went in."
"Did it help?"
"It told me I need to go to Anshem." He looked at the boy. "There's someone there who found something I asked about. I don't know what. The letter doesn't say."
Bram looked up. "V," he said. "Veth. She works in the Conclave's archive."
He watched the boy's face. "You knew about her."
"You told me about her. You told me most things." A pause. "I think you told me because there wasn't anyone else to tell, and you needed to tell someone, and I was old enough to keep quiet about it." He said it without self-pity, which made it land harder than self-pity would have.
"What did I tell you about her?"
"That she was careful. That she'd helped you find things before that she wasn't supposed to help you find. That she was one of three people in Anshem you'd trust with a question you couldn't ask in public."
"Who were the other two?"
Bram shook his head. "You didn't tell me that."
Calder nodded. He was thinking about a man who had been careful. Who had told a fifteen-year-old most things but not everything, who had shared the contact but not the other names in case something went wrong and the boy was asked about it. The shape of it was a person who had thought about what it would look like if things went badly.
"I'll need directions to Anshem," he said. "And I'll need to know what the Conclave's presence there looks like. What to avoid."
"I can tell you what you told me about it."
"That's a start."
Bram looked at him for a moment. "You're different," he said. Not accusatory. Just observing.
"I know."
"Not bad different. Just." He stopped. "You used to think for a long time before you said things. You'd go quiet and we'd just sit and then you'd say something. You don't do that now."
Calder thought about this. "I don't have enough information yet to think for a long time. I'm still at the stage of collecting."
Bram looked at him with the sharp watchfulness, and then something shifted in it. Not quite a smile. "Yeah," he said. "That sounds like you, actually."
He spent the morning in his room going through the notes methodically, building a picture of what he'd been doing in the months before the tower. By midday he had a workable account: a year of settling into the village, taking work, building trust slowly, and simultaneously chasing something in the old records. Something connected to the tower, to the Warden, to the pre-Interdict period. He'd been careful to keep the two threads separate. His work for the villagers and the Valdenen family on one side. His private inquiry on the other.
The private inquiry was the thing that had brought him to the tower door.
He was sitting with the last of the notes, a page of the geometric calculations, when he heard the sound from outside.
It was not loud. A low, resonant hum, the kind that you felt in the chest before you heard it with the ears, lasting perhaps three seconds and then gone. He was at the window before the sound had fully faded.
In the square, a man he hadn't seen before was kneeling beside the well with both hands flat on the stone coping. The well was dry. He could see from the window that no bucket was rigged, no rope. The man was older, heavyset, wearing a leather apron over working clothes. Two women stood a few paces back, watching.
The hum came again. And then water rose in the well. He could see the surface appear, dark and still, two meters below the coping, where there had been nothing a moment before.
The man stood and dusted his hands and said something to the women and they nodded and went to get their buckets. The man walked away. An ordinary transaction, by all appearances. Something needed, something done, everyone moving on.
Calder stayed at the window.
He replayed it. The man's hands flat on the stone. The hum. The water. The sequence was straightforward. What wasn't straightforward was a thing he had noticed and was only now fully noticing: in the moment of the hum, in the three seconds between the man's hands on the stone and the water appearing, the light in the square had shifted. Just slightly. Just for those three seconds. A faint flatness to it, like looking at colors through thin gauze.
When the water appeared, the light came back.
He stood at the window for a while after the square had emptied.
He didn't have a framework for what he'd seen. He didn't have the vocabulary for it, didn't know what the Conclave would call it or what its formal classification was or whether what the man had done fell within the Interdict's permissions or outside them. He had none of that.
What he had was a question that had arrived with the quiet inevitability of something that had always been waiting.
The hum. The water. And the light going flat in between.
Whatever the man had done, the water was the result. That much was obvious. But the light going flat, that wasn't the result. The man hadn't intended that. The women watching hadn't reacted to it. Either they couldn't see it or they were so accustomed to it that it no longer registered.
The light going flat was something else. Something left over. Something the working produced that wasn't the working.
He stepped back from the window and sat down at the table and looked at his hands for a moment.
He didn't know what that meant yet. He suspected it was important. He had no basis for the suspicion beyond the fact that it was the part no one was paying attention to, and the parts no one paid attention to were, in his experience, where the structure of things actually lived.
He wrote it down in the notes. One line, at the bottom of the last page.
Light went flat during the hum. Not a side effect of the water. What caused it?
Then he closed the notes and started thinking about Anshem.
