Chapter 5 - SUBTLE GUIDANCE

The library was quieter than usual that afternoon. Mei Lin had claimed her favorite corner table again, books stacked neatly, pen poised over her notebook. She was determined to finish her next essay early, despite the whispers that followed her every move.

"Can I sit?" Daniel's voice broke through her concentration. She looked up to see him leaning casually, smirk in place.

"I don't think there's room," she replied, motioning to the empty chair across from her.

"Plenty of room," he said, ignoring her resistance, sliding into the seat. "You really do love being the center of attention, don't you?"

"I focus on my work," Mei Lin said, tone calm but firm. "I don't need approval from anyone."

Daniel leaned back, arms crossed, his smirk fading into something sharper, calculating. "We'll see how long you can keep that up."

Mei Lin's jaw tightened, but before she could reply, another voice cut through the tension.

"Ms. Mei Lin?"

She looked up to see Professor Chen standing at the table, a folder in hand. He gave Daniel a brief glance, one that was quiet but filled with subtle authority, and then turned to her.

"I wanted to discuss your essay in detail," he said, voice low enough for Daniel not to hear clearly. "Your arguments are solid, but there are a few points that could be strengthened."

Mei Lin blinked, momentarily caught off guard. "I—I'd appreciate that, Professor."

Chen leaned over the table, pointing to a paragraph she had written. "Here, you analyze the character's motivation well, but consider adding context from historical references—it will make your argument more persuasive."

As he spoke, Mei Lin felt a warmth, not in embarrassment, but in… recognition. Someone was actually noticing her thinking, her effort.

Daniel shifted in his seat, clearly uncomfortable. Mei Lin met his gaze briefly, then focused back on Chen's instructions.

When the professor finally stepped away, Mei Lin exhaled, cheeks flushed. She had always been proud of her work, but this—this guidance felt… different. Personal. Significant.

That evening, she walked across the campus courtyard, leaves crunching beneath her feet. Daniel had already left, and the air felt lighter.

It's not about being the teacher's pet, she thought. It's about being seen for my work… for me.

And somewhere in the back of her mind, a small, unfamiliar feeling whispered: Maybe he doesn't just notice me because of my grades.
