Chapter 30 - The New Normal

Six months later, Dumaguete had adjusted to its new normal.

Tourists came specifically to see Glad fly on full moons. The community center thrived, serving hundreds of creatures monthly. And Glad herself had become something she never imagined: a public figure, an advocate, and (according to some) a hero.

"Glad! Glad! Over here!"

She smiled for the cameras, wings folded neatly behind her. Another interview, another chance to spread her message.

"How does it feel to be the most famous Manananggal in history?" the reporter asked.

"I'm not sure I'm the most famous. There might be others I don't know about."

"You're definitely the most famous. You have 5 million TikTok followers."

"That's still weird to think about."

The interview continued—questions about the council, the community center, her relationship with Ariel. Glad answered them all with the grace of someone who'd spent centuries learning patience.

Afterward, she met Ariel at The Bleeding Bean for their weekly date.

"Another interview?" he asked.

"Another interview. I'm starting to lose count."

"That's a good problem to have."

They sat together, sipping their drinks, watching the café fill with creatures of every description. Normal. Ordinary. Exactly what Glad had always wanted.

"Can I ask you something?" Ariel said.

"Always."

"Do you ever miss it? The hiding? The quiet?"

Glad thought about it. "Sometimes. When it gets overwhelming, I miss my small apartment and my solitude. But then I think about all the creatures who don't have to hide anymore. All the humans who understand us better. And I know it's worth it."

Ariel smiled. "That's my girl."

"I'm 173. I'm not a girl."

"You'll always be my girl."

She rolled her eyes, but she was smiling.

That night, Glad flew alone over Dumaguete—a tradition she'd kept, even with her new life. Anino rode on her shoulder, as always, his purrs a steady rhythm against her neck.

Below her, the city sparkled. Cars moved. People lived.

And somewhere out there, she knew, other creatures were watching her fly, gathering courage to come out too.

"Anino," she said, "we did good."

Anino purred.

"Yeah. We did."

The moon hung full and bright overhead, silver light spilling across the sea.

Tomorrow there would be more interviews, more council meetings, more chaos.

But tonight?

Tonight was just flying.

And that was enough.
