Chapter 3 - The First Mission

The morning fog hung low over the outskirts of Tokyo, casting a gray haze over abandoned buildings and crumbling streets. Ren Akatsuki adjusted the strap of his bag as he followed Mika Hanabira and Aoi Kurogane down the cracked pavement.

"This is it," Mika said, her voice steady. "Your first real mission outside the school. Don't underestimate it. Curses don't follow rules, and neither do humans desperate enough to use them."

Ren swallowed, glancing at the surrounding buildings. The abandoned hospital ahead seemed innocuous, but the energy in the air told a different story. He could feel the pull—the faint tug of cursed energy, dark and alive. Shadows along the ground shifted as if sensing him, stretching and writhing with anticipation.

Aoi cracked his knuckles. "Let's get this over with. The faster we finish, the faster we can get back to lunch."

Ren's lips twitched. Even in casual moments, Aoi's confidence was intimidating. But Ren knew he had his own edge—Shadow Dominion.

---

The front doors of the hospital creaked as they pushed them open. Dust motes danced in the shafts of morning light streaming through broken windows. The silence was thick, almost suffocating.

Ren's shadows shifted at his command, forming subtle tendrils along the walls, probing for hidden dangers. Mika moved beside him, her eyes scanning every corner, ready to unleash reverse cursed energy at a moment's notice.

"Remember," Mika whispered, "stay in formation. Watch each other's backs."

Ren nodded. He could feel his shadow pulse, stretching toward the darker corners of the hallway. Something waited there—a curse that had grown cunning enough to manipulate its surroundings.

A faint giggle echoed from the second floor. Ren's head snapped up. The sound wasn't human—it carried a metallic resonance, almost playful but with a sinister undertone.

"Stay sharp," Aoi muttered. "It knows we're here."

---

They split into a triangle formation, moving carefully through the long corridors. Ren's shadows extended, brushing against walls and floors, probing, testing. Then they froze.

A figure emerged at the end of the hallway—its body twisted and elongated, features shifting constantly. Red eyes glowed beneath a cloud of black mist. It hissed, sensing Ren's presence.

Ren's shadows reacted instantly, wrapping around the creature like living chains. The curse recoiled, letting out a screech that reverberated through the building.

Aoi charged forward, sword gleaming with cursed energy, slashing at the creature. Mika moved to flank it, summoning a protective barrier as the curse lashed out with jagged limbs.

Ren focused, extending his Shadow Dominion fully. Tendrils snaked out, wrapping around the curse's appendages, redirecting its energy. Sparks flew as cursed energy collided with shadows, each strike reverberating through the empty hallways.

---

The battle was chaotic. Ren realized quickly that controlling the shadows in real combat was more difficult than training. Each movement had consequences. If his concentration faltered, the shadows could turn violent, even against him.

But Ren's instincts kicked in. He felt the rhythm of the curse, the ebb and flow of its energy. Slowly, methodically, he maneuvered his shadows, creating barriers and striking at weak points. The curse shrieked, thrashing violently, but the shadows held firm.

Aoi leaped back, grinning despite the strain. "Not bad for your first fight!"

Ren's eyes narrowed. "We're not done yet."

The curse's form began to split, producing smaller, weaker versions of itself. Mika's barrier shimmered as she prepared to neutralize them, but Ren's shadows reacted faster, coiling around the minions and holding them in place.

The battle was a test not just of power, but of strategy. Ren realized his shadows could adapt, mimic, and even use the energy of the curses against them. But with each move, he felt a tug at his own being, a subtle pull from the darkness he commanded. It was a reminder: his power came with a price.

---

Hours seemed to pass in minutes. By the time the last curse fell, the hospital was eerily silent again. Dust and smoke hung in the air, and the smell of burnt cursed energy lingered. Ren's body ached, but adrenaline kept him upright.

Mika surveyed the scene, her expression calm but critical. "Good work. But remember, you're only just beginning. That was a mid-grade curse. The real threats… they think, they plan, and they hunt."

Aoi wiped sweat from his brow, leaning against the wall. "You've got talent, Ren. Shadows like yours… I've never seen anything like it in a first-year. But you need control. Let it get wild, and it could take you over."

Ren nodded, feeling the truth in Aoi's words. He could feel his shadows, coiling and twitching as if testing him, whispering temptations of power. He clenched his fists, willing them to obey. I control you. Not the other way around.

---

After the mission, they returned to the school. Hiroshi was waiting, his arms crossed, his expression unreadable. "Ren, you've performed well. But your technique is unstable. If the King of Curses is truly rising, powers like yours will attract attention. Control it, or it will control you—and put everyone around you in danger."

Ren's jaw tightened. He had felt the pull today, the shadows testing boundaries he hadn't even known existed. But he also felt a thrill—a sense of purpose. This was the path he had been destined for, whether he understood it yet or not.

As night fell over Tokyo Jujutsu High, Ren sat on the rooftop, looking out at the city lights. The shadows behind him shifted, stretching long across the roof, alive with energy and intent.

Tomorrow… tomorrow we get stronger, he thought. The King of Curses was out there, somewhere. And when the time came, Ren Akatsuki would be ready—or he would become something far more dangerous than anyone expected.
