Chapter 2 - Whispers in the hallway

Morning arrived slowly over St. Aurelius Elite Academy. Pale sunlight stretched across the vast courtyard, reflecting off the academy's towering glass windows and polished stone walls. Luxury cars rolled through the gates one after another, dropping off students dressed in immaculate uniforms.

Inside the academy, the hallways were already alive with quiet conversations.

But as always, certain conversations were never spoken too loudly.

They were whispered.

Elena Rivera stepped through the front doors, adjusting the strap of her bag as she walked inside. The academy still felt overwhelming to her. Everything about it was grand-the high ceilings, the marble floors, the chandeliers that hung above the corridors.

Even the students seemed different.

More confident.

More polished.

More powerful.

She still felt like she didn't quite belong here.

As she walked toward her locker, she began to hear it again.

The whispers.

"Did you hear what happened yesterday?"

"They said he stayed at the academy late."

"No one knows why."

"My cousin works for the Volkov family. She said Adrian Volkov never stays anywhere longer than he has to."

Elena slowed her steps slightly.

That name again.

Adrian Volkov.

Even after seeing him once, the mystery surrounding him seemed even heavier.

She couldn't explain why her thoughts kept returning to him.

Maybe it was the way the entire school reacted to his presence.

Or maybe it was the strange emptiness she had seen in his eyes.

Before she could think about it any longer, the hallway suddenly shifted.

The whispers faded.

Students instinctively stepped aside.

The corridor slowly parted.

Elena looked up.

Adrian Volkov had entered the hallway.

Everything about him looked exactly the same as the day before-calm, composed, untouchable. His dark uniform jacket rested perfectly on his shoulders, and his expression remained distant, as if nothing around him truly mattered.

But today something was slightly different.

His gaze wasn't fixed straight ahead.

He was looking around.

Not obviously.

Not enough for most people to notice.

But carefully.

Like he was searching for something.

Or someone.

Walking beside him was the only person who seemed completely unaffected by Adrian's intimidating presence.

Lucas Petrov.

Tall, relaxed, and observant, Lucas had been Adrian's closest friend for years.

And he noticed the difference immediately.

Adrian was scanning the hallway.

"That's new," Lucas muttered quietly. "Usually you look like you'd rather be anywhere else."

Adrian didn't respond.

His eyes continued moving across the corridor.

Students.

Lockers.

Groups of whispering girls.

Nothing.

Then Adrian suddenly slowed.

Lucas followed his gaze.

A girl stood by her locker a few steps away, adjusting the books in her bag.

Elena Rivera.

As she moved, a thin folder shifted in her hands.

A few music sheets slid slightly out from the top.

Adrian's eyes paused on them.

Just for a moment.

Something about the sight stirred a faint memory in his mind.

A melody.

Soft piano notes drifting through the quiet academy halls the night before.

His expression remained unchanged, but the crease between his brows deepened slightly.

Lucas noticed.

"Music?" Lucas murmured, glancing at the sheets.

Elena turned slightly as she closed her locker.

For a brief moment, her eyes met Adrian's.

The hallway seemed to freeze.

Elena felt it immediately.

Those dark eyes.

Sharp.

Observant.

Unsettlingly calm.

Her heart skipped unexpectedly.

Then Adrian looked away.

As if the moment had never happened.

He continued walking down the hallway without another glance.

The corridor slowly returned to life behind him.

Students began whispering again.

Elena stood still for a second, confused.

Did that really just happen?

Beside Adrian, Lucas smirked slightly.

"Well," he said under his breath, "that was interesting."

Adrian's voice remained low and controlled.

"Find out who she is."

Lucas raised an eyebrow.

"That girl?"

Adrian didn't look back.

But the melody from the previous night echoed faintly in his memory.

The piano.

The quiet emotion in every note.

He still didn't know who had played it.

But something about it refused to leave his mind.

Lucas chuckled softly.

"You heard music yesterday, didn't you?"

Adrian stopped walking for a fraction of a second.

That was enough confirmation for Lucas.

"I knew it," Lucas said with a grin.

Adrian's expression hardened slightly.

"Just find out."

Lucas raised his hands in mock surrender.

"Relax. I'll have the entire story by lunch."

Across the hallway, Elena finally started walking toward her classroom.

She couldn't explain why the encounter left her feeling unsettled.

Adrian Volkov had barely looked at her.

Barely acknowledged her existence.

Yet something about that brief moment lingered in her thoughts.

She shook her head and continued down the corridor.

Completely unaware that the most powerful boy in the academy had just asked someone to investigate her.

And completely unaware...

that the quiet melody she had played the night before had already begun to disturb the carefully controlled world of Adrian Volkov.
