Chapter 28 - 19.3. A Message From the Dead.

Far away, in the deepest part of the Phantom Bazaar, Arin stood before a cracked mirror.

His reflection stared back.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the reflection smiled.

Arin didn't.

He raised his right hand.

The reflection raised its left.

He leaned closer.

"Who are you?"

The reflection's smile widened.

"You already know."

Arin's expression hardened.

"No. I don't."

The reflection tapped the inside of the glass.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then it spoke.

"Your friend is looking for you."

Arin stepped backward.

"Rive?"

The reflection nodded.

Something flickered behind its eyes.

"He knows something is wrong."

Arin clenched his fists.

"Then tell me where he is."

The reflection laughed softly.

"You still want to save him?"

Arin's face darkened.

"I want answers."

"Of course."

The reflection pressed its palm against the glass.

A black symbol appeared beneath its fingers.

Three circles.

One silver line.

Arin's eyes widened.

He had seen that symbol before.

Not in the Phantom Bazaar.

Not in the In-Between.

In a dream.

A dream that had begun the night he died.

The reflection leaned forward.

"There's something you need to remember, Arin."

"What?"

The glass began cracking.

"You weren't supposed to become a Devourer."

Arin froze.

The reflection continued.

"You were supposed to become the key."

The mirror shattered.

Arin stood motionless among the fragments.

Then a voice emerged from the darkness behind him.

"Now you understand."

Arin slowly turned.

The faceless figure stood at the entrance.

Its long fingers curled around the doorframe.

Arin stared at it.

"Tell me the truth."

The creature tilted its head.

"Which truth?"

Arin's eyes burned with anger.

"Why did I become what I am?"

The creature remained silent.

"Why does Rive have a power connected to mine?"

Still nothing.

Arin stepped forward.

"AND WHY DO I KEEP DREAMING ABOUT A DOOR I HAVE NEVER SEEN?"

The creature's shadow spread across the floor.

Then it answered.

"Because you have seen it."

Arin stopped.

"Where?"

The creature leaned closer.

"Before you died."

Arin's expression changed.

For the first time in years, he felt afraid.

Not of losing a fight.

Not of becoming weaker.

But of discovering that his entire existence had been built upon a lie.

The creature extended its hand.

A small image appeared in its palm.

A school hallway.

A window.

Two boys standing beside each other.

Rive and Arin.

Both were younger.

Both were laughing.

And behind them—

A door stood open.

Arin stared at the image.

"I don't remember this."

The creature's voice became almost gentle.

"Of course you don't."

The image vanished.

"You were never meant to."

Arin looked down at his hands.

The black markings beneath his skin began to glow.

Then, from somewhere far beyond the In-Between, a familiar voice reached him.

Rive's voice.

Weak.

Distant.

But unmistakable.

"Arin… if you can hear me, I'm coming to find you."

Arin's eyes widened.

For one brief moment, the darkness inside him receded.

He remembered his friend.

The arguments.

The jokes.

The ordinary afternoons that had once seemed endless.

Then the voice came again.

"And when I find you…"

Rive paused.

Even across the distance, Arin could hear the determination in his voice.

"…you'd better have a really good explanation."

Arin stared into the darkness.

Then, despite himself, he laughed.

A real laugh.

The first one in a long time.

"Idiot."

His smile faded.

He looked toward the creature.

"Tell me how to find him."

The creature extended its hand.

A silver key appeared between its fingers.

"Take this."

Arin stared at it.

"What does it open?"

The creature's answer was quiet.

"The door that killed you both."

Arin reached for the key.

The moment his fingers touched it—

The world went black.

And somewhere deep inside the forgotten space between life and death—

A door began to open.
