Chapter 27 - Chapter 25

Chapter 24: IPL Final – CSK Batting Second

The dressing room was alive with energy, but a quiet tension lingered. Arjun Rao walked in after his spell, sweat streaked across his face, eyes still burning with focus. His teammates clapped him lightly, a mix of camaraderie and acknowledgment.

Dhoni's calm voice cut through:

"Good job with the ball. Now, focus shifts. We have a chase ahead. Stick to the plan. One ball at a time."

Arjun nodded. He had never felt more alive, yet more aware of responsibility. CSK had restricted MI to 125/9, a total that seemed manageable, but finals were unpredictable, and one lapse could undo everything.

The First Over – Openers Take the Crease

Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson strode out, calm and confident. The stadium's roar was immense, but Arjun found a strange sense of clarity, almost as if the energy around him amplified his focus.

He picked up a bat. Not as a bowler, but as someone now entrusted with helping finish the game. He had watched his teammates in nets countless times, studied bowlers, planned shot selection — now was the moment to execute.

Faf faced the first ball, played cautiously, nudging a single. Watson defended solidly. Arjun's eyes scanned the field, noting gaps, bowler rhythm, and MI's defensive placements.

Arjun's First Batting Opportunity

By the fourth over, Watson misjudged a slower ball and was trapped LBW. CSK needed stability. Dhoni turned to Arjun:

"You're in. Play your natural game. Don't rush."

He walked out, taking in the roaring crowd. Cameras zoomed in; commentators whispered about the 17-year-old leg-spinner coming out to bat in the IPL final. Arjun's heart raced, but he drew in a deep breath.

"Stay calm. Watch the ball, trust your instincts, and play smart."

Ball-by-Ball – Early Innings

First ball: Outside off, a gentle push to mid-off. Dot.

Second ball: Short delivery, quick glance at fielders, nudged for a single. Confidence grew.

Third ball: Full delivery on off stump, defended solidly. Dot.

Fourth ball: Loopy delivery, Arjun steps forward, drives — top edge, safe, nothing behind it.

Fifth ball: Another defensive shot, backing away to watch the spin. Dot.

Sixth ball: Flicked off the pads for two runs — first runs for Arjun in an IPL final.

He exhaled slowly, letting himself settle into the rhythm. Every glance at the field, every subtle shift in the bowler's body language was being processed.

Partnership and Pressure

Arjun and Faf started rotating the strike carefully. Every run counted. MI's bowlers tried to bring pressure with short deliveries, but Arjun's timing and shot selection were precise.

He nudged a slower ball for a single, cut a back-of-a-length delivery for two, and defended the rest.

Inside his mind:

"Flight, patience, placement. Don't go for glory shots yet. This is a chase, not a hitting contest."

The stadium responded to every run — a mix of tension and hope. Every dot ball by MI felt like a challenge, every safe shot by Arjun a victory.

The Turning Moment

In the ninth over, MI tried to change the pace. A faster ball, slightly shorter. Arjun read it instantly, stepped forward, and drove it past mid-off for four.

The stadium erupted. His teammates cheered from the boundary ropes. Dhoni nodded approvingly from the crease, Jadeja smiled knowingly, Bravo pumped his fist. Arjun felt a surge of energy — not arrogance, but a quiet joy at seeing practice become performance.

Clutch Shots Under Pressure

MI tried spin to disrupt him. Arjun faced a leg-spinner with subtle drift:

First ball: defended.

Second ball: flicked off the pads, single.

Third ball: stepped out, lofted over mid-on for six runs.

The crowd went wild. He felt a thrill, but quickly checked himself mentally. He knew the innings wasn't about flair alone; every shot had to count toward victory.

The Partnership Strengthens

By the 12th over, Arjun had scored 23 runs off 18 balls, calm under pressure. He rotated strike effectively with Faf. Singles, doubles, occasional boundary — the chase was well in control.

Arjun's focus was total. He noticed every fielder's position, every bowler's slight twitch, every subtle variation in flight. Cricket had always been mental as much as physical, and he had learned from Dhoni, Jadeja, and Bravo how to read the game.

Final Overs – Securing the Win

By the 17th over, CSK required 25 runs with 3 wickets in hand. Arjun was unbeaten on 45 runs, composed and confident. The last overs required a delicate balance — aggression when necessary, caution when needed.

17th over: pushed a slower ball for three runs, nudged another single.

18th over: lofted a leg-break for four runs, then defended.

19th over: drove a top-spinner through covers for four runs, rotated strike.

20th over: CSK needed 5 runs. Arjun faced the first ball — cut for two, second ball a single. CSK crossed the line.

Victory and Celebration

The stadium exploded. CSK had won the IPL final. Arjun Rao, the 17-year-old leg-spinner, was carried by his teammates, hugged by Dhoni, and celebrated across the field. Cameras captured every expression — joy, relief, disbelief, pride.

Arjun's mind raced:

He had bowled a match-defining spell: 6 wickets for 28 runs.

He had contributed with the bat: 52 runs off 34 balls, calm under pressure.

He had played his first IPL final like a seasoned campaigner.

Dhoni, smiling quietly, clapped him on the shoulder:

"You belonged here today. Not just as a bowler, but as a cricketer."

Bravo, Jadeja, Raina, Rayudu — all celebrated with him, teasing him, laughing, lifting him onto their shoulders. Arjun laughed too, letting himself enjoy the culmination of years of hard work, mentorship, and belief.
