Chapter 18 - Ch16

Chapter 16: Arjun Rao's Debut – First Innings

The MA Chidambaram Stadium was electric. The yellow wave of CSK fans roared as Chennai Super Kings prepared to bowl first against Kolkata Knight Riders. For 17-year-old Arjun Rao, tonight wasn't just another match — it was his IPL debut.

Earlier in the week, news had arrived like a thunderclap: Imran Tahir had injured his hamstring and was ruled out. That left a slot for Arjun, the young leg-spinner who had been training under Dhoni, Fleming, and the senior CSK stars.

Dhoni had pulled him aside before the match:

"Your chance is here. Focus on your line, use your flight, and trust your skills. Bowl smart, not fast."

Arjun nodded, feeling nerves and excitement surge together.

CSK Bowling Lineup

The playing XI for CSK tonight:

Faf du Plessis

Shane Watson

Suresh Raina

Ambati Rayudu

MS Dhoni (c & wk)

Ravindra Jadeja

Arjun Rao

Dwayne Bravo

Deepak Chahar

Harbhajan Singh

Lungi Ngidi

After the pacers and Harbhajan bowled early overs, Dhoni turned to Arjun.

"Your first over," Dhoni said. "Keep it simple, keep it tight."

First Over

Arjun ran in, heart pounding, and delivered his first ball: a flighted leg-break just outside off. The batsman played it safely for a single.

Ball two, a subtle googly, coaxed a defensive prod — dot ball.

Ball three, slight top-spin — blocked for another single.

The last three balls he mixed flight and pace, keeping them on their toes. Over complete: 6 runs, no wickets.

Second Over

The KKR batsmen began probing him.

Ball one: a gentle leg-break, nudged for a single.

Ball two: a sharper turn outside off, safely defended.

The rest: careful, controlled deliveries. Singles were taken, no boundaries conceded.

Over finished: 5 runs, no wickets.

Arjun exhaled, feeling a flicker of confidence. His system panel quietly tracked:

Leg-spin control: improving. Focus: steady. Confidence: rising.

Third Over

Arjun approached the crease again.

He delivered a series of flighted leg-breaks and slower googlies, keeping the batsmen guessing.

Singles were conceded, but no boundaries.

He maintained rhythm and composure, trusting the training he had absorbed from Jadeja, Harbhajan, and Dhoni.

Third over complete: 4 runs, no wickets.

First Spell Summary

Arjun's debut bowling spell was quiet but effective:

Overs: 3

Runs conceded: 15

Wickets: 0

Economy: 5.0

Dhoni nodded approvingly as Arjun returned to the boundary:

"Good first spell. Build pressure, watch the batsmen, and stay confident."

Even Harbhajan gave a subtle smile:

"Nice control, kid. That's how you start your IPL career."

The system update reflected his calm debut:

Leg-spin skill: 79/100

Pressure handling: 90/100

Confidence: High

Though wicketless, the economical, disciplined bowling left a strong impression. It was a solid first step — the foundation for a promising IPL journey.
