Chapter 58 - The Game of Survival

The Game of Survival

Kyle had once known a world that felt more real than reality itself.

It was a virtual world beyond a display screen—a VRMMO. Vast grasslands stretching as far as the eye could see, battlefields where even the sensation of wind was recreated, and the exhilarating sense of being able to control his own body however he pleased. To him, it was not an escape from reality. It was another reality altogether.

That was precisely why he failed to notice anything strange at first.

He had no memory of logging in. There was no logout button. He couldn't even feel the weight of a headset. And yet, the familiar HUD was displayed before his eyes, just as it always had been.

Level: 1.

HP: 100/100.

The reason those figures felt so disturbingly vivid was that the air around him seemed utterly, unmistakably real.

The scent of grass, the dampness of the soil, the calls of birds in the distance. Every detail was more precise than anything he had ever experienced in a game before. There was nowhere to escape.

The first sign that something was wrong was a scream.

Someone shouted in the distance. Gunshots rang out, followed immediately by silence. The sequence was so painfully realistic that Kyle finally understood.

This wasn't an event. It wasn't a staged performance.

It was a fight to the death.

Before long, a notification appeared at the edge of his vision.

"Player has died."

For some reason, he knew it instinctively. That wasn't a defeat within the game. It meant that someone had ceased to exist in reality.

His certainty was soon proven.

The first time he shot another person.

Pulling the trigger had felt effortless. But the consequences were unbearably heavy. The bullet tore straight through the other person's body. Blood erupted, and the person collapsed, never to move again.

A few seconds later, the HUD displayed a message.

Level Up.

Kyle stood frozen in place.

He understood what he had just done. Yet the fact that the "system" was affirming his actions was more terrifying than anything else.

Even so, he couldn't afford to stop.

In this world, those who hesitated were the first to die.

He shot back at those who attacked him, took their weapons, gathered equipment, and strengthened his skills. Through this endless repetition, his level steadily increased.

Level: 5

Level: 12

Level: 21

With each increase, his movements became sharper, his field of vision expanded, and his reaction speed surpassed the limits of an ordinary human being. But something else was gradually being worn away in exchange.

His sense of guilt.

It had certainly been there at first. But with every battle, it grew weaker. No, to be more precise, it was being overwritten.

As an action necessary for survival.

As an efficient choice.

Before long, Kyle had begun to regard combat itself as a matter of "processing." Identify the enemy's position, eliminate them as quickly as possible, collect the resources. There was no longer any room for emotion.

Before he realized it, he was smiling.

In the middle of battle.

At the moment his level increased.

He understood how abnormal it was, yet he couldn't bring himself to stop.

Then, one day, he heard a rumor.

There was a way to "leave" this world.

It wasn't simply an escape. It was a return to reality.

There was only one condition.

Defeat the Devil.

Deep in the jungle, in a region no one ever dared to enter, lay an enormous underground dungeon. The Devil was said to dwell in its depths.

Kyle didn't hesitate.

Perhaps, somewhere inside himself, he wanted to reject the person he had become after adapting to this world. Or perhaps he had simply grown accustomed to seeking out the strongest enemy.

Whatever the reason, he set foot into the jungle.

The air was humid, vines clung to everything, and the terrain made it difficult to see ahead. Beyond the dense vegetation, a cave opened its mouth like a gaping void.

The stairs leading underground were strangely well maintained, as though someone had prepared them to guide visitors down.

At the deepest level.

What awaited him there was not a monster.

It was a man.

Dressed in black, he possessed an aura that was somehow beyond human.

"So, you've finally arrived."

The man smiled.

There was no hostility or tension in his expression. Only genuine curiosity.

"I'm Azazel. You could say I'm something like the designer of this world."

Kyle said nothing, keeping his gun trained on him.

"So, what do you think of this world? Interesting, isn't it?"

His words were disturbingly casual.

To call this place "interesting," when hundreds, perhaps thousands, of lives had vanished within it.

Something inside Kyle shifted irrevocably.

It wasn't anger. It wasn't fear.

It was simply a conclusion.

He would shoot this man.

That was all.

"If I defeat you, I can go back, right?"

Kyle's voice was surprisingly calm.

Azazel shrugged.

"Who knows? But it's worth a try."

At that moment, Kyle placed his finger on the trigger.

His aim was precise, centered directly on the man's heart.

There was no hesitation.

It was the same as before. Eliminate the enemy. Nothing more.

He pulled the trigger.
