Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 : The Coldest Heart

The office was unnervingly quiet. Even the usual hum of the air conditioning and the clatter of keyboards seemed to retreat under the weight of Adrian Blackwood's presence.

Adrian sat at his desk, fingers steepled, eyes sharp enough to slice through steel. The man was a legend in the corporate world—a billionaire, ruthless, untouchable. Rumor had it he hadn't glanced at a woman in years, since the day his wife died. And for most, that made him untouchable, cold, and… terrifying.

Yet today, something felt different.

Lila stumbled into the office, clutching a stack of files. The uniform she wore was too big, her shoes slightly scuffed, and the hair she'd hastily tied back had escaped in small rebellious strands. She was ordinary. Plain. Invisible, almost—at least to everyone else.

"Careful there," muttered a colleague, barely above a whisper, as Lila nearly tripped over the edge of the carpet.

Adrian didn't flinch. Or so he thought. Inside, something pricked at him—a spark he hadn't felt in years.

"What are you doing here?" His voice was low, cutting through the silence like a knife.

"I… I came to clean, sir," Lila replied, bowing her head, cheeks flushing.

There was something defiant in her posture, a quiet dignity that didn't match the clumsy way she carried herself. Adrian's sharp gaze lingered a fraction too long. The office froze. Everyone knew better than to speak, but they watched.

"Cleaning, yes. But… why now?" he asked, leaning back in his chair, arms crossed.

"I… I like things in order, sir. Everything… tidy," she said, her voice small but steady.

Adrian's lips pressed into a thin line. No one had ever spoken to him like that—not since his wife's funeral, when everyone tiptoed around him as if he were fragile glass. And yet, this girl… she didn't tiptoe.

A soft knock echoed at the office door. "Sir, your 10 a.m. meeting—" the secretary began.

"Cancel it," Adrian interrupted, his voice sharper than intended. He barely noticed the whisper of surprise that rippled through the room. Meetings didn't get canceled. Not for anyone.

Lila froze mid-step, eyes widening. "Cancel… the meeting?"

"Yes," he said simply. Then, before he could regret it, he added, "And stay."

The words hung in the air. She blinked, unsure if she had heard correctly. Everyone else gasped silently.

Adrian ignored them all. For the first time in years, he didn't care what anyone thought.

He watched as Lila adjusted the papers in her hands, seemingly unaware of the tension radiating off him. Something inside him twisted—a mixture of irritation and fascination. She shouldn't affect him. No one did.

Yet, she did.

The office continued its routine around them, but Adrian couldn't look away. He noticed the way her hands trembled slightly as she set the files on the desk. The faint scent of lavender clung to her, subtle but unmistakable. He clenched his jaw. This was absurd. He wasn't… capable of… feelings.

He'd spent years convincing himself that. Women disgusted him. They were frivolous, selfish, always looking for something they couldn't earn. He didn't have time for them. He didn't need them.

And yet… here she was. Lila. Ordinary. Clumsy. And somehow… extraordinary.

A soft cough drew his attention. One of his executives dared to peek around the corner. "Sir… she's just—"

"Just what?" Adrian's voice was flat, cold, but the hand that tapped impatiently on the desk betrayed him.

"She's the new maid," the executive whispered, unsure if he should continue.

Adrian's eyes narrowed. The new maid. As if a title could reduce her to nothing. But she wasn't nothing. She was something he couldn't quite name, a puzzle piece that didn't fit anywhere in his controlled world.

"Fetch me coffee," he said abruptly.

Lila froze again. "I… I'm not—"

"Do it," he said, voice final.

Her hands shook slightly as she obeyed, but there was a spark in her eyes—defiance, perhaps, or maybe curiosity. Adrian frowned. Why does she provoke me so?

As she turned to leave, he called out, almost instinctively, "Lila."

She paused, glancing back.

"Stay five minutes after your shift. I want to talk."

Her eyes widened, a mix of fear and something else he couldn't name. She nodded, voice barely audible. "Yes, sir."

Adrian exhaled slowly, staring at the empty doorway after she left. His heart, which he hadn't realized he still had, thudded in a way that made him feel… unsteady.

No one had made him feel unsteady in years.

The office resumed its hum, the whispers restarted, and Adrian leaned back, closing his eyes. Why does she matter? The question annoyed him. She shouldn't.

And yet, deep down, he knew that the real game had just begun.
