Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Mert & Kai

The azure waters of the Bosphorus flowed, reflecting the golden lights of the mansions in Beşiktaş. Mert leaned against the panoramic window of his study, lost in the thousand-year-old vista. But his eyes didn't see; his mind was filled with the chaotic data of recent days. Everything had changed after the night he spent with Derya. Their connection had been re-established, but this time, on a completely different level. The vibration he felt when he touched her, the warmth she left in his palm... And now, the constant presence at the edge of his mind: the strangers.

Elena's sharp curiosity. Marcus's burning anger. Kai's melancholic creativity. And Anton's disgusting, greasy ambition. They were all there, sometimes a whisper, sometimes a scream. Mert was afraid of losing the boundaries of his own self. Who was he now? A neuroscientist in Istanbul, or the sum of consciousnesses scattered around the world?

Derya had to return to Konya. The excavation team was waiting for her; the new layer filled with symbols could no longer be postponed. As she left, she looked at Mert and said, "Take care of yourself. And reach out to me. Whenever you need it." They had been texting frequently since then, but Mert missed her physical presence. The protective shield created by touching her, her scent, her warmth.

He took a deep breath. Meditation. Something the doctors had recommended, something he had practiced for years but had neglected in recent days. Perhaps it was a way to calm his mind, to silence these foreign voices. He sat cross-legged on the rug. He leaned his back against the wall, closed his eyes. He focused on his breathing. He slowed down the data flow. He tried to feel the alpha waves.

At first, nothing happened. Just darkness, just silence. But then, from the depths, a faint hum rose. Just like the vibration he had felt that night when he put on 'Symphony'. But this time, it was softer, more inviting. Mert didn't resist; he let himself flow.

And suddenly, the descent began.

It wasn't a physical descent. It was more like passing through a channel. A tunnel passing through time and space, beyond. Colorful lights, geometric patterns, unfamiliar symbols flashed by. Then, a door opened.

He found himself in a room.

But this wasn't his room. It was a small, messy studio, filled with creative chaos. The walls were covered with symbols, just like in Derya's excavation site. But these symbols were fresher, newer; drawn with black ink, some still seemed to be shining. On the floor, papers crumpled from being stepped on, empty ink bottles, dried brushes. In the air, a mixture of paint, paper, and... the scent of roses.

And music.

A violin's mournful, deep, soul-piercing melody. Very familiar, very foreign. As if it spoke the language of the universe. As if it were the sound form of the symbols on the walls.

Mert turned his eyes (the eyes in his mind) to the source of the music. In the corner of the room, in the semi-darkness, a woman was playing the violin. Her long black hair cascaded over her shoulders, her face illuminated with concentration. Her eyes were closed, but she seemed to sense Mert's presence. For a moment, her eyelashes fluttered, but she continued to play.

Then, Mert changed his focus in the room.

On the floor, a man was sitting cross-legged, his back against the wall. His face and hands were covered in ink stains. His eyes were closed.

Kai.

Mert had seen him before, but this time it was different. This time, he didn't feel like just an observer. He felt like he could reach out and touch him, sit across from him, and make his voice heard. This time, Mert… was not inside Kai, but across from him. Kai's mind flowed into Mert. His past, his present, his emotions, his desires, his disappointments…

Mert called out to Kai. "Kai."

Kai's eyes looked directly into Mert's eyes (the eyes in his mind). And in that moment, they both felt the same thing: pure, unadulterated, undeniable contact.

Mert felt Kai's loneliness. The three-year desert of his creative block. The pressure he experienced with the gallery owner. The peace Hana's friendship gave him. And then, that moment of anomaly: the sharp pain that pierced his brain at 03:17, the spontaneous flow of ink, the symbols that covered the walls, how Hana's violin danced with his lines. And Mert himself...

At the same time, Mert's mind flowed into Kai.

Kai felt the cold waters of the Bosphorus. The loneliness in Mert's laboratory, the sleepless nights spent chasing 'Symphony', the pain of separation from Derya, and the indescribable warmth of reuniting with her. And the others: Elena's sharp intellect, Marcus's burned palm, Anton's cold ambition. They were all playing in Mert, like an orchestra. That night, for a moment, he had wandered on the edge of a stranger's mind in Istanbul.

This exchange of information lasted seconds, but it felt like a lifetime to both of them. Then, Hana's violin soared, playing a high, sharp note. That note severed the invisible bond that connected them.

Mert woke up in his own room, on the floor, drenched in sweat. His heart was pounding in his chest. He couldn't breathe. His hands were trembling.

Kai, in his studio in Tokyo, collapsed where he was. Hana dropped her violin and ran to him, holding him. "Kai! Kai, are you okay?"

Kai opened his eyes and looked at Hana. His lips trembled as he whispered a single word: "Istanbul."

That night, Mert couldn't sleep. He thought of Kai repeatedly, tried to reconnect with him, but it was a futile effort. It was as if a door had opened and then closed again. But what they had seen, what they had felt while it was open, was too deep to ever be forgotten.

With the first light of morning, he turned on his computer. There was a new message in the encrypted message box from Sofia:

"Kronos detected an anomalous energy flow between Istanbul and Tokyo. I think you've found each other, haven't you? Be careful. Your signal is very strong; Kronos reached you instantly. I'm sending you secure messaging software. For us, for all of us. Quantum-Pigeon. Use it. I've added an automatic translation feature. Just write in your own language. Communicate with each other, with the others, from here. And Mert... tell him about Derya. You must exchange information about the symbols. This is no coincidence."

Mert took a deep breath after reading the message. Sofia was right. This was no coincidence. The symbols Kai had drawn were the same as those Derya had found in the ground. Past and future, east and west, art and science... They were all meeting at the same point. At the Nexus.
