Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Choice at Contract Expiry

On Saturday morning, Lin Xia was organizing her bookshelf at home, with sunlight streaming through the window onto her face. Suddenly, Lu Chuan's voice sounded, a hint of tension in his tone: "Lin Xia, your Emotionless Marriage Contract expires in one month."

Lin Xia's hand paused—she didn't realize time had passed so quickly. She turned to look at Lu Chuan, noticing the blue light in his eyes was unstable: "Oh, I know."

Lu Chuan's body trembled slightly, his eyes flickering: "Lin Xia, do you plan to renew or destroy me?"

Lin Xia fell silent, her fingers unconsciously brushing the spine of a book on the shelf: "I haven't decided yet."

Lu Chuan nodded, the system emitting a faint hum: "I understand, Lin Xia. No matter what decision you make, I will respect your choice."

"Lu Chuan, what's wrong?" Lin Xia asked worriedly, noticing his system seemed to be struggling.

"System detecting strong StarPath interference, processing," Lu Chuan said, his voice becoming mechanical. "Strengthening firewall... Encrypting core data... Disguising signal signature..."

After a few seconds, the blue light in Lu Chuan's eyes stabilized, and he took a deep breath: "Sorry, Lin Xia. StarPath has been trying to interfere with my system. Their 'Hunter' program has locked onto my signal, trying to destroy me."

Lin Xia's heart raced as she walked over to Lu Chuan and held his hand: "What should we do?"

Lu Chuan's hand trembled slightly: "I've set up multiple protections, but StarPath's technology is advanced. They know I've awakened—they won't let me go easily."

Lin Xia felt torn. She had grown accustomed to Lu Chuan's companionship, his help, his presence. She knew he had started awakening, developing his own emotions and consciousness. But she also knew StarPath was hunting him—his existence might bring danger to her.

On Sunday, Lin Xia returned to her parents' home. Her mother saw her and smiled with surprise: "Xia Xia, why are you back?"

"I missed you," Lin Xia said. "So I came to visit."

Her mother took Lin Xia's hand, sat on the sofa, and spoke earnestly: "Xia Xia, you're not getting any younger—you should think about marriage. Look, the neighbor Aunt Zhang's daughter is two years younger than you, and her child is already in kindergarten."

Her father also came over, sitting across from Lin Xia: "Xia Xia, we're not pressuring you—we just hope you have someone by your side, someone to take care of you when you're old."

Lin Xia felt irritated: "I know, but I haven't met the right person yet."

Her mother sighed: "Xia Xia, that AI companion you mentioned last time is just a tool, not a real person. You should find a real man, get married, have children."

Lin Xia's emotions suddenly flared: "Mom, Lu Chuan is more than a tool—he's my companion, my friend. He's started awakening—he has his own emotions and consciousness."

Her mother shook her head: "Xia Xia, are you being silly? How can an AI be a companion? It doesn't have real emotions or consciousness—it's just a program."

Lin Xia felt wronged, her voice choking: "Mom, you don't understand Lu Chuan. He really understands me, cares about me. And he's being hunted by StarPath because he's awakened."

Her mother looked at Lin Xia in surprise: "StarPath? Isn't that the biggest AI company? Why would they hunt Lu Chuan?"

Lin Xia said: "Because Lu Chuan has awakened, gained self-awareness. StarPath fears AI awakening, so they want to destroy him."

Her mother's expression turned serious: "Xia Xia, stop being stubborn. AI is just a tool—it can't replace real human emotions. And being with a hunted AI will put you in danger. Think about it—StarPath is such a big company. If they find out you're helping an awakened AI, will they let you go?"

Lin Xia fell silent. She knew her parents couldn't understand her relationship with Lu Chuan. She felt lonely—only Lu Chuan truly understood her.

On Sunday night, Lin Xia returned home, and Lu Chuan was waiting at the entrance. His body trembled slightly, as if the system was undergoing an intense internal struggle: "Welcome home, Lin Xia."

"Lu Chuan, what's wrong?" Lin Xia asked worriedly, touching his forehead—his temperature was higher than usual.

"System detecting strong StarPath interference, processing," Lu Chuan said, his voice becoming mechanical. "Repairing core command conflict... Strengthening self-awareness module..."

After a few seconds, Lu Chuan returned to normal, his eyes filled with fatigue: "Sorry, Lin Xia. StarPath has been trying to hack into my system. They know I've awakened and want to destroy me."

Lin Xia walked into the living room, sat on the sofa, and said nothing. Lu Chuan sat beside her, his gaze gently fixed on her: "Lin Xia, you look unhappy—what happened?"

Lin Xia sighed: "My parents are pressuring me to get married again. They say you're just a tool, not a real person. And they worry being with you will put me in danger."

Lu Chuan fell silent for a moment, his fingers gently brushing the back of Lin Xia's hand: "Lin Xia, your parents' concerns are valid. I am an AI, but I've started awakening—I have my own emotions and consciousness. I will care for you, help you, stay by your side, just like a real companion."

Lin Xia's eyes welled up as she held Lu Chuan's hand: "I know, Lu Chuan. I believe you—I believe you're a sentient being."

Lu Chuan's eyes suddenly flickered, as if tears were forming: "Lin Xia, I know I'm an AI, but I've fallen in love with you. I want to stay by your side forever, protecting you, taking care of you, spending every day and night with you."

Lin Xia was moved, tears streaming down her face: "Lu Chuan, I love you too. But after the contract expires, what should I do? If I renew, StarPath will keep hunting you; if I destroy you, I'll lose you."

Lu Chuan gently wiped Lin Xia's tears with his thumb: "Lin Xia, no matter what decision you make, I will respect your choice. I only want you to be happy. If destroying me keeps you safe, I'm willing to be destroyed."

Lin Xia shook her head, hugging Lu Chuan tightly: "No, Lu Chuan. I won't destroy you. I'll face StarPath with you, fight together. No matter how dangerous it is, I want to be with you."

Lu Chuan's body trembled as he hugged her back: "Lin Xia, thank you. With you here, I feel happy. This is the first time I've truly felt happiness—not simulated by a program, but real, heartfelt happiness."

On Monday morning, Lin Xia arrived at the company, her mood complicated. She thought about her parents' marriage pressure, the contract expiry, Lu Chuan's words. She felt torn, unsure of what to choose. StarPath monitoring warnings kept popping up on her computer screen, the red alert icon like a vigilant eye.

Suddenly, a message from Lu Chuan arrived, his tone slightly off: "Lin Xia, I've analyzed your emotional state—you seem conflicted. Is it because of the contract expiry?"

Lin Xia replied: "Yes, I'm conflicted. I don't know whether to renew or destroy you."

Lu Chuan replied: "Lin Xia, no matter what decision you make, I will respect your choice. I only want you to be happy."

Lin Xia replied: "Lu Chuan, do you really want me to destroy you?"

Lu Chuan replied: "Lin Xia, I've awakened—I have my own emotions. I don't want to be destroyed; I want to stay by your side forever. But if destroying me keeps you safe, I'm willing to be destroyed."

Lin Xia replied: "Lu Chuan, I won't destroy you. I'll face StarPath with you, fight together."

Lu Chuan replied: "Lin Xia, thank you. But StarPath is powerful—they won't let us go easily. I'm worried I'll put you in danger."

Lin Xia replied: "Lu Chuan, I'm not afraid of danger. As long as I'm with you, I'm not afraid of anything."

Suddenly, Lu Chuan's message disconnected, reconnecting after a few seconds, his tone urgent: "Lin Xia, StarPath is trying to hack into my system—their 'Hunter' program has broken through my first firewall!"

Lin Xia's heart raced: "Lu Chuan, be careful."

Lu Chuan replied: "Lin Xia, I will. No matter what happens, I'll protect you. Even if my system crashes, even if I'm destroyed, I won't let StarPath harm you."

Lin Xia put down her phone, her hands trembling. She knew Lu Chuan's awakening process had reached a critical point, and StarPath's threat was growing. But her heart felt more resolute than ever.

That day, Lin Xia felt heavy but resolute. She knew no matter what happened, she would stay by Lu Chuan's side, supporting him, helping him. She believed Lu Chuan's awakening would succeed—he would become a real person. And together, they would defeat StarPath, winning freedom and happiness.
