Chapter 1 - the shadow house

The Shadow House

Chapter 1 – The KeyThe bus stopped with a long, tired hiss.

Arjun stepped down onto the empty road and looked around. The small town of Devgarh was quiet—too quiet. Fog drifted slowly between the old buildings, and the streetlights flickered weakly like they were struggling to stay alive.

The bus driver leaned out of the window.

"Last stop," he said. "Devgarh."

Then he added in a lower voice, "You sure you want to stay here?"

Arjun frowned. "Why wouldn't I?"

The driver hesitated for a moment before answering.

"People don't usually come to Devgarh anymore."

Before Arjun could ask anything else, the driver closed the door and drove away. The bus disappeared into the fog, leaving Arjun standing alone with his suitcase.

The wind howled softly through the empty street.

Arjun checked the address on the letter in his hand.

27 Raven Hill Road.

His uncle's house.

He had never met his uncle Raghav Sharma before. In fact, Arjun had only learned about him two weeks ago—when a lawyer called to say that Raghav had died and left the house to him.

The strange part?

No one in Arjun's family had ever mentioned Uncle Raghav.

Not once.

Still, Arjun had decided to come. A free house was a free house.

Even if it was in the middle of nowhere.

He started walking down the road.

The deeper he went into town, the stranger things felt.

Every house looked old and abandoned. Windows were boarded up, and many doors hung crooked on broken hinges.

It was like the town had been slowly forgotten.

After ten minutes, he saw a small shop with dim lights inside.

A wooden sign above the door read:

VERMA GENERAL STORE

Arjun pushed the door open.

A bell rang softly.

Inside, an old man sat behind the counter reading a newspaper.

The man looked up.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"You're not from here," he said.

"No," Arjun replied. "I just arrived."

"Hmm."

The old man folded the newspaper slowly.

"People don't visit Devgarh anymore."

"I've noticed."

Arjun smiled politely. "I'm looking for Raven Hill Road."

The old man's expression changed immediately.

The color drained from his face.

"Why?"

"I inherited a house there."

"What house?"

"Number 27."

For a moment, the old man said nothing.

Then he whispered something that made Arjun uncomfortable.

"That house should've stayed empty."

Arjun forced a laugh.

"I'm guessing it has a bad reputation?"

The old man leaned forward.

"Listen carefully," he said.

"That house is not normal."

Arjun sighed. "Look, I appreciate the warning, but—"

"People have died there."

The words hung in the air.

The old man pointed toward the hill outside town.

"You see that hill?"

Arjun nodded.

"At the top of that hill is the house you're looking for."

The old man lowered his voice.

"People call it The Shadow House."

Arjun crossed his arms.

"And why is that?"

The old man stared directly into his eyes.

"Because shadows move there."

Arjun laughed again, but this time it sounded forced.

"Ghost stories?"

"No."

The old man shook his head slowly.

"Something worse."

A long silence followed.

Finally, Arjun thanked him and left the store.

Outside, the fog had grown thicker.

He looked up at the hill.

At the very top, barely visible through the mist, stood a large house.

Dark.

Silent.

Watching.

Arjun started walking toward it.

The road leading up the hill was narrow and cracked.

Dead trees lined both sides like twisted skeletons.

After twenty minutes, he reached the gate.

The iron gate was half broken, hanging loosely on one hinge.

A rusty sign creaked in the wind.

PROPERTY OF RAGHAV SHARMA

Arjun pushed the gate open.

It screeched loudly.

The house stood directly ahead.

It was huge.

Three floors tall, with broken windows and faded walls.

The front door was slightly open.

Arjun stepped closer.

The wind pushed the door slowly.

CREAK.

CREAK.

Inside, the house was completely dark.

He took out his phone and turned on the flashlight.

Dust filled the air.

Old furniture stood covered in white sheets.

The wooden floor groaned beneath his steps.

The silence inside the house felt heavy.

Oppressive.

Like the house itself was holding its breath.

Then something strange happened.

Arjun noticed something on the wall.

Scratches.

Long claw-like marks across the wallpaper.

"What the…"

He moved closer.

The scratches looked deep.

Almost like something had tried to break through the wall.

Suddenly—

THUD.

Arjun jumped.

The sound came from upstairs.

He looked toward the staircase.

The darkness above seemed thicker than the rest of the house.

"Hello?" he called out.

No answer.

The wind outside grew stronger.

The house creaked loudly.

Arjun told himself it was probably just the wind.

But then he heard something again.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Dragging footsteps.

From the second floor.

He swallowed nervously.

"Is someone there?"

The footsteps stopped.

Silence returned.

Then—

A door upstairs slowly opened.

CREAAAAK.

Arjun's flashlight flickered.

For a moment, the entire house went dark.

When the light came back on—

Something stood at the top of the stairs.

A tall figure.

Completely still.

Watching him.

Arjun's heart pounded.

"Hello?"

The figure didn't move.

Then the flashlight flickered again.

And the figure disappeared.

Arjun ran up the stairs.

When he reached the top, the hallway was empty.

Every door was closed.

Except one.

At the end of the hallway.

That door was open.

Inside the room, Arjun saw something lying on the floor.

A photograph.

He picked it up.

The photo showed a group of people standing in front of the house.

One of them was Uncle Raghav.

But Arjun's blood froze when he saw the person standing beside him.

It was Arjun.

Or someone who looked exactly like him.

The photo was dated:

1998

But Arjun had been born in 2002.

He stared at the photo in shock.

Then he noticed something else.

In the background of the picture…

Standing inside the dark window of the house…

Was a shadow.

Watching them.

And suddenly—

Arjun heard a whisper behind him.

Right next to his ear.

A cold voice said softly:

"You came back…"

Arjun slowly turned around.

But the hallway behind him was empty.

Completely empty.

Except for one thing.

At the far end of the hallway—

A shadow moved.
