Chapter 2 - Prologue II – Beneath the Rope

With great effort, he tried to open his eyes, but for some reason he found it difficult to do so. What's more, he felt like he couldn't breathe, as if something was choking him.

"Ah... Ugh..."

Strangely, a girl's voice could be heard in the room along with the sound of wood creaking as if it were holding a heavy load. The air that enveloped the room also felt cold, but it was a very humid cold.

As far as Lucas could remember, he had been in his room, sleeping on his bed, just like he did every day. He had no idea what was happening. He felt as if he were floating, his feet not touching the ground at all, and he swung his legs to find something to hold on to.

There was no doubt about it—his neck was now hanging from a rope tied to something above. He may be aware that he has recently become a gloomy person, which he thinks is normal for someone his age, but he had no memory of trying to hang himself. Not once he's thinking about that, not after what he's going through.

In a panic and with sporadic movements, Lucas tried to find something to hold on to and shift his weight onto a foothold. Finally, he touched something like thick fabric beside him. Without hesitation, Lucas immediately grabbed hold of it and tried to climb up.

His fingers dug desperately into the coarse fabric, nails scraping as his vision blurred and dark spots began to bloom at the edges. The rope bit into his throat, each frantic gasp yielding no air, only a burning pressure that made his chest convulse violently.

His legs is kicking wildly, searching for leverage, striking nothing but empty space. The wood above him groaned louder this time a sharp, splintering crack cutting through the room. For a brief second, everything seemed suspended in silence.

Then the support gave way. The beam snapped with a violent snap, and Lucas' body dropped heavily onto the floor below, the rope loosening as he crashed down in a tangled heap against the cold wood.

When he finally touched the floor again, he immediately touched his neck repeatedly, checking for any damage. His view was also obstructed by something like white thread, no, it was hair. Lucas was confused as to when he had grown hair that reached at least to his shoulders.

He coughed repeatedly, trying to fill his lungs with oxygen that previously couldn't even pass his throat. After calming down a bit, he saw the thick cloth he had previously used to survive now lying in front of him.

"Wh-what?" Lucas exclaimed in surprise. Strangely, it was a girl's voice that came out, but he didn't pay much attention to that compared to what he saw in front of him.

Previously, he wasn't really paying attention because of the challenges he was facing, but now that he looked back. It was clear that what was in front of him wasn't a thick piece of cloth, but the body of a woman who seemed to be lifeless. What's more, the body wasn't alone; nearby was also the body of a man in shabby clothes.

As he's looking at the two bodies lying on top of each other, he suddenly heard rapid footsteps, accompanied by screams coming from the same direction as the footsteps.

Not long after, suddenly the sound of a door slamming loudly filled the dark room filled with wet wood. The room, which had previously been dark, was now instantly illuminated by light from outside that filtered through a group of men in outdated suits, who were now standing observing the scene inside the room.

"Look, they're here!" shouted one of the men in the group.

Before Lucas could process what was happening into information in his brain, his vision suddenly became blurry. He tried to keep his eyes open, but it was useless. His vision returned to darkness, and his consciousness began to fade slowly.
