Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 – Victory Together

The afternoon sun painted the park in warm gold as laughter and chatter filled the air. The company picnic had already been a success, but now came the highlight of the day: the grand group activity. Everyone gathered in anticipation as the organizers announced the challenge. Teams would compete to build a structure using limited materials—sticks, ropes, and clay—within thirty minutes. The tallest and most stable structure would win a prize.

Excitement rippled through the crowd. Colleagues clapped, interns whispered nervously, and Elena felt her stomach twist. She turned to Adrian, her "assistant," and whispered, "I've never done this before. What if I mess up?"

Adrian's eyes softened, his voice calm. "Then we'll mess up together. But I think we'll win."

She frowned, half amused, half skeptical. "You sound confident."

He gave a small shrug. "Assistants should be confident in their interns."

Their group was quickly formed: Elena, Adrian, and three other colleagues. At first, chaos reigned. Everyone argued about the design—some wanted a tall tower, others a bridge. Elena hesitated, biting her lip, until Adrian leaned close and murmured, "You're good at details. Suggest something."

She swallowed nervously, then said, "What if we make a pyramid? It's stable, and we can use the clay to hold the joints."

The group paused, then nodded in agreement. "That could work."

Adrian smiled, his voice low but encouraging. "See? You're a natural leader."

Elena blushed faintly. "I just thought it might be easier."

The team got to work. Elena directed where the sticks should go, while Adrian tied the ropes and pressed clay into the joints. His hands were quickly covered in mud, but he didn't mind. At one point, Elena leaned forward to adjust a stick, and a smear of clay stuck to her cheek. She didn't notice, too focused on the structure.

Adrian did. He paused, then reached out gently, brushing the clay away with his thumb. His touch was careful, respectful, but warm.

Elena froze, her cheeks warming. "You didn't have to…"

He smiled softly. "Assistants fix everything. Even clay disasters."

She laughed, embarrassed but touched. "You're ridiculous."

Halfway through, disaster struck. One of the ropes snapped, and the structure wobbled dangerously. Elena panicked. "It's going to collapse!"

Adrian grabbed the sticks, holding them steady. "Quick, tie another rope here."

Elena's hands shook, but she managed to knot the rope tightly. Adrian pressed clay over the joint, his movements swift and precise. Together, they stabilized the pyramid. Their colleagues cheered. "Nice save!"

Elena exhaled, smiling with relief. "We did it."

Adrian grinned. "Told you we'd win."

With minutes left, Elena suggested adding a decorative flag at the top. "It'll make it stand out."

Adrian raised an eyebrow. "A flag? That's not in the rules."

She smirked. "But it's not against them either."

He laughed. "Fine. Let's do it."

They tore a piece of cloth from a spare bag and tied it to a stick. Adrian lifted Elena slightly so she could place it at the top. Their teamwork drew applause from nearby teams.

When time was up, the judges inspected each structure. Many towers leaned dangerously, and some bridges had collapsed. But Elena's team's pyramid stood tall, stable, and decorated with a flag fluttering in the breeze. The judges smiled. "This team wins the prize for creativity and stability."

Cheers erupted. Elena's eyes widened. "We… we won?"

Adrian grinned. "Of course we did."

The prize was a basket of snacks and a small trophy. Elena held it proudly, her colleagues clapping her on the back. She turned to Adrian, her voice soft. "Thank you. I couldn't have done it without you."

He shook his head. "You led the team. I just followed."

She smiled, her heart warming. "You're too modest."

For a moment, Adrian wanted to tell her everything—the promise under the stars, his true identity, the reason he was by her side. But he held back. It wasn't time yet. Instead, he said lightly, "Assistants should always make sure their interns shine."

Elena laughed, but her cheeks warmed. "You're strange… but maybe not so bad."

Meanwhile, Marcus watched from a distance, clutching his chest dramatically. "He cleaned clay off her cheek, lifted her to place a flag, and now they're winning prizes together. If she ever finds out he's the CEO, I'm finished." He muttered under his breath, "I'll die of a heart attack before this charade ends."

As the sun dipped low, the team gathered for photos with their trophy. Elena stood in the center, smiling brightly, while Adrian stood beside her, his hand steady on the pyramid they had built. For Elena, it was just a fun day with colleagues. For Adrian, it was another step toward fulfilling the promise he had carried all these years. And for Marcus, it was another day of sheer terror.
