Rena's PoV
I'm caught off guard for a minute, and Vanessa used that opportunity to snatch the contract from my hands, but I somehow cannot bring myself to think about it because my entire body is shaking.
"What ghost? What are you talking about?" Why can't she just speak in clear terms?
Vanessa shook her head and glanced at Jason. "I guess he couldn't bring himself to tell you…"
"Tell me what?!" My voice was louder than I intended, and Jason flinched slightly.
I held the wall for support because the room was starting to spin.
There's a feeling swirling around my gut. The same feeling that made me rush here four weeks ago, only to find out that Daisy was on a trip.
"Since I have this now," she started while waving the contract, "I would say this in the simplest way I can."
"Jason didn't want to disturb the research, so he couldn't tell you, but Daisy got so sick two months ago and didn't survive it."
I knew she was joking.
Vanessa has always enjoyed playing tricks on me, and this is probably just another prank.
But there's something about the way her eyes are so clear that made me unable to brush this off.
There's no excitement or mockery in them. Almost as though she was being serious.
But she is certainly joking. My Daisy couldn't be dead when I still spoke to her two days ago.
Vanessa has just managed to get better at tricking me.
My grip on the wall corner tightened to hold my body from falling.
"So you are saying that you have no intention of holding Daisy back? I can take her with me once I find her?"
Vanessa sneered but ended up nodding. "Yes, if you have the ability to raise the dead, you can take her with you."
That was it. Vanessa should have known that Daisy was my bottom line, so without thinking, I threw myself against her and yanked her hair backwards at the same time.
We fell to the floor, with Vanessa acting as some sort of support for me. I heard Jason's voice, but I didn't care. Instead, I delivered two quick slaps on her face.
I wasn't able to continue as Jason finally pulled me away from her. But I felt really satisfied just looking at Vanessa's reddened cheeks. Even before Jason and I got together, Vanessa always bullied me and used me as her personal maid.
When she found out about us, she was unable to stomach that I would become one of them, and most times, I even felt that she disliked Daisy just as much.
This was my first time actually standing up to her. And it felt really good.
Now I just had to find Daisy. I searched around for my phone and quickly realized that it was still in the car.
I didn't have so much time, so I broke into a run and sighed deeply when I saw Kevin still leaning against the car. Thank goddess.
Because of the chemicals and the machine we used for the research, I had decided to leave Daisy back at the Pack. Knowing she was the Alpha's daughter, a lot of people actually treated her well.
It was hard not to. Daisy had to be one of the sweetest souls that the moon goddess ever made.
The call connected immediately, but there was no response, so I grabbed my bag and headed to the house.
Even though I already knew about Lucy, I still couldn't hold back a scoff when I got inside and saw that the house had been redecorated. It looked completely different now.
I wondered if Lucy designed it, but also hoped she didn't, because the house looked much nicer than before.
After taking a deep sniff of the house, I headed straight to Daisy's room. Her scent is hardly in the house, but it's possible that a lot of guests have been frequenting here with all the new developments.
But when I entered her room, I finally felt that same tightness spreading around my chest and around my stomach.
My daughter's scent is so faint in the room. Almost like she hadn't been here in a month. Or even more.
I looked around the room, trying to see what I could learn from her being around and then sniffing all her teddies.
Even if Vanessa was lying. Even if she staged all of this as some elaborate prank, why would Daisy's scent be so faint in her room that was still filled with her things?
Mindlessly, I dialed the number of the phone I had gotten for her before I left, and this time, the call was picked up almost immediately.
The relief that rushed through me immediately feels like waking up after a near-death experience.
"Daisy!"
There was a silence, and then a rustling sound before Daisy's voice came on.
"Mommy, are you okay?" Daisy asked, and I felt my legs go soft. I sat on her bed while taking deep breaths.
"Daisy, where are you? Mommy is back."
There was another stretch of silence, and just when I was about to speak again, her room door opened, and Vanessa strolled in with a beaming smile while holding two phones in her hands.
Then I heard Daisy's voice coming from one of the phones and also in my ears.
"Mommy, I think I'm in heaven."
