"This way," I said.
Behind me, the ragged company gathered close.
Fifteen of us now. Wolves, vampires, a half-breed, and one very angry demon, standing amid the dead landscape of the demon realm like a pack of ghosts with unfinished business.
Nobody spoke. We kept our eyes on our surroundings, carefully surveying the area for anything foolish enough to approach us. The ground beneath our feet hummed with a low, unsettling vibration. Somewhere in the distance, something shrieked, followed by the sound of something else answering it. Above us, the bruise-colored sky hung low, its strange, shifting clouds giving the impression that the entire realm was watching us.
I couldn't blame it for being curious. An unusual group like ours was going to be the demon realm's worst nightmare.
Eventually, I broke the silence.
"I reached him," I announced, raising my voice enough for everyone behind me to hear. "Gilbert. I reached him through the mind link."
