The dry mountain air now blended with the steam from the newly constructed communal kitchen at the mine entrance. The aroma of warm oatmeal and herbal decoctions permeated the gaps between the granite pillars, creating a far more humane atmosphere than the bandit camp once dominated by Elder Granite.
Yoe Choin, in the form of Moen Kang Yo, stood at the entrance to the main tunnel. In his hand was a teakwood plank, clutching several sheets of parchment containing a graph of energy crystal production fluctuations. His glowing blue eyes scanned a new support structure that had just been installed in a fifty-meter vertical sector.
"Jin-Pyo," Choin called, without taking his eyes off the plank.
Jin-Pyo approached quickly, his heavy footsteps rattling the stone floor. He no longer looked like a wild warrior; his clothes were clean, and he carried a bronze angle gauge.
"Yes, sir? Sector four has been reinforced. Elder Granite and his men worked two full shifts last night."
"Tell Granit, the slope of the support beam in sector four exceeds 0.3 degrees. The mass pressure from the upper layers of the canyon is still insufficient," Choin said in a cold, precise tone.
"Have him reinstall it before lunchtime. I don't want this cave to experience premature fatigue when we begin core drilling tomorrow."
Behind them, the sound of lighter, more elegant footsteps could be heard. Namgung Shiri stepped forward, her blue robes rolled up slightly to avoid touching the mine dust. Behind her, Jo-Sun carried a small velvet box—a special delivery from the Namgung clan promised yesterday.
"You really never stop auditing, do you?" Shiri's voice was soft, but it held a note of admiration she couldn't hide.
"Even at this cold dawn, you've already calculated the angle of the support beam."
Choin turned, giving a curt nod.
"The stability of a structure knows no rest, Miss Namgung. The smallest cracks usually occur while the supervisor is asleep."
Shiri stood beside Choin, staring into the darkness of the tunnel, now lit by a neat row of oil lamps.
"Jo-Sun, give the delivery to the Young Master."
Jo-Sun opened the box. Inside was an ancient navigational instrument made of clear crystal and pure gold—a high-grade Aura Compass.
"This is an instrument for detecting the density of Qi in materials," Shiri explained.
"My father bought it from a merchant from the Far West. I thought a young master of the demon faction, obsessed with 'material quality' like you, would value this more than mere gold."
Choin accepted the instrument, his rough fingers touching the cool crystal surface. For a moment, his Blueprint blue eyes resonated with the instrument, creating a 3D visualization of the entire mine area in his mind.
"This instrument has exceptional sensitivity to material inclusions," Choin murmured, his voice softening slightly. "Thank you, Miss Shiri. This will cut our geological survey time by 40%."
"Foreman, look at the way you accept a gift from a beautiful woman," the real Moen Kang Yo's voice interrupted him, its tone filled with mocking laughter. "She gave you a romantic antique, and you immediately calculate its efficiency percentage? You really are a difficult building material to process!"
"Shut up, Boss," Choin said to himself.
"This tool is the key to finding pure crystal veins a hundred meters deep."
That afternoon, under a large tent that served as a coordination center, Choin gathered the leaders of the various factions now united under his banner. There was Elder Granite, whose face now looked brighter but still stiff, Jin-Pyo from the Demolition Unit, and Namgung Shiri, representing the trade investors.
"Starting today, the economic integration between the North, East, South, and West officially begins," Choin declared, spreading a large blueprint map on the table.
"We will no longer operate as isolated units. Energy crystals from the West will be shipped to the East via our new bridge for processing, then distributed by the Blue Sky Trade Alliance throughout the continent."
Elder Granit cleared his throat, he stroked his beard which was full of mining dust.
"Young Master... my men asked, is it true that they will get a bonus if this month's production target is achieved? So far, we only know how to steal to eat."
Choin looked at Granit seriously.
"In my management, performance incentives are the law. Diligent workers are pillars that must be cared for. You will receive additional wages and health insurance from the Evernight healers. But remember..." Choin's eyes glinted sharply,
"a single missing crystal piece without a record will be considered a serious customer. The penalty is permanent contract termination... physically."
Guroh, who happened to be there for a logistics report, nodded firmly.
"We in the East have experienced it, Granit. Working for this Young Master is tiring, but our stomachs are full and our houses no longer leak when it rains."
Shiri smiled at the interaction.
"This is an extraordinary phenomenon, Young Master Moen. You are using 'mutual benefit' as a foundation to unite your enemies. A social structure built on the necessities of life is far stronger than one built on fear."
However, amidst this harmonious development, a dark cloud arrived in the form of an exhausted horseman. The man was wearing the uniform of a secret courier from the central region of the Demon Faction. He immediately knelt before Choin, handing him a dark purple scroll with the silver seal of Lady Baek, the third wife who had once assisted Kang Yo.
Choin unrolled the scroll. His eyes narrowed as he read its contents.
"Kang Yo, the storm in the central palace has reached saturation point. Empress Wei is aware of your expansion in the East and West. She won't send a large force openly due to factional law, but she has unleashed a group of Mastery-level assassins known as the Structural Saboteurs. They won't attack you directly; they will destroy everything you've just built."
"The foreman... that snake woman really wants to play dirty," the voice of the real Moen Kang Yo hissed with cold fury.
"She wants to tear down every piece of your hard work."
"Leave it alone, Boss," Choin replied, his hands crumpling the letter to pieces. "A good foreman always has a disaster mitigation plan. If she wants to send sabotage, then I'll turn our building structure into a death trap for them."
That night, Shiri found Choin standing alone on the edge of a cliff, looking east. The moonlight reflected on his black sword leaning against the rock.
"Any bad news from the center?" Shiri asked softly, standing close enough for Choin to smell the jasmine flower in her hair.
"Just a slight operational hiccup, Miss," Choin replied without looking up.
"It seems there are some who don't like seeing the building I built standing so high."
Shiri paused for a moment, then touched the sleeve of Choin's robe.
"If the storm comes, the Namgung clan will remain standing as your pillar of support. We've invested too much, and I won't let it collapse."
Choin turned his head, staring into Shiri's clear eyes in the moonlight. For the first time, he didn't see her as an "audit variable" or a "logistics partner."
"Miss Shiri... the symmetry of your face tonight..." Choin paused, searching his foreman's dictionary for the right word.
"Yes?" Shiri waited with a teasing smile.
"...Very structurally stable," Choin said stiffly.
Shiri chuckled, her laughter like the tinkling of the most beautiful wind chimes.
"You truly are beyond help, Young Master Moen. But... I'll take that 'stable' compliment as a promise that you won't let yourself be toppled by any storm."
Night descended on the Western Canyon with a wary silence. Beneath the surface, Evernight Gate was no longer just a sect, but a gigantic organism flexing its muscles. The Demon Overseer had completed his consolidation audit, and now, he was preparing to face the onslaught of shadows seeking to undermine his future blueprint.
