Chapter 12 - Heartbeats in the Storm

The city was quiet, draped in the soft glow of twilight. Bella Hartley sat alone in her penthouse, staring at the skyline through floor-to-ceiling windows. The events of the past week—Vincent's attacks, the press, the investors, the gala—were weighing heavily on her, but tonight felt different.

She didn't feel alone.

Ethan was there, sitting across from her on the plush sofa, exhaustion etched into his features. Yet despite the long hours, the tension, and the stress, he had a calm presence that made her chest ache in a way she hadn't expected.

"Bella…" he began softly, his voice low enough to almost blend with the hum of the city below. "I need you to know… whatever happens, I'm not going anywhere."

Bella turned to face him fully, her eyes glistening. "I know, Ethan. And I… I feel the same. I've never felt this way before—with anyone."

He reached across the coffee table, taking her hand in his. "You're not just a CEO, Bella. You're… you. Someone brave, intelligent, and real. And I… I love that about you. I love you."

Her breath caught, and for a long moment, neither spoke. The words hung between them like fragile glass, beautiful and terrifying.

"I… I love you too, Ethan," she whispered, tears brimming. "I've been scared—scared of what people will think, scared of the world we live in… but I can't deny it anymore. I don't want to."

Ethan's hand tightened gently around hers. "Then we face it together. No matter what Vincent or anyone else throws at us, we'll be a team. Always."

Bella leaned forward, resting her head lightly on his shoulder. The warmth of his presence, the strength of his promise, made her feel safe in a way she hadn't known possible.

For the first time since their paths had crossed, fear gave way to trust, and uncertainty gave way to hope.

The quiet was broken by the soft ping of Bella's phone. A new email flashed across the screen—a press article questioning her company's integrity. Normally, it would have made her panic. But tonight, she felt different.

Ethan squeezed her hand, sensing her unease. "We'll handle it," he said calmly. "Together."

Bella smiled, leaning back against him. "Yes… together."

Outside, the city lights reflected on the glass walls of the penthouse, flickering like tiny stars. Inside, two hearts—different worlds, different experiences—beat in unison.

It wasn't the end of their battles. Vincent Crawford was still out there, scheming. The pressures of Bella's corporate empire loomed large. But for the first time, they weren't facing it alone.

They had each other.

And that made all the difference.
