Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 — Soldiers from Nowhere

------------

Smoke lingered long after the fighting ended.

Edward stood at the edge of the village square, watching soldiers move methodically through the ruins. Fires were being extinguished using strange metal canisters that sprayed white foam. Wounded villagers received treatment from uniformed medics who worked with calm urgency.

The contrast felt unreal.

Wooden cottages and medieval armor surrounded men carrying rifles and radios.

Two worlds occupying the same space.

A young boy peeked from behind a wagon, eyes wide with awe as a soldier handed him a wrapped ration bar.

"It's safe," the soldier said gently.

The boy accepted it like sacred treasure.

Edward exhaled slowly.

*They're not afraid of me yet.*

That wouldn't last.

Heavy footsteps approached behind him.

The knight from earlier—broad-shouldered, silver-haired, carrying authority even without his helmet—stopped a respectful distance away.

"I am Sir Roland Weiss," he said, bowing slightly. "Captain of the Third Border Guard."

Edward nodded awkwardly. "Edward… Foley."

Sir Roland studied him carefully.

Not hostile.

But cautious.

"My lord Edward," Roland said, choosing his words carefully, "those warriors… they appeared from thin air."

Edward glanced toward the soldiers.

They stood at attention, awaiting orders despite the battle being over.

"…Yeah," Edward admitted. "They did."

Roland hesitated.

"Are they spirits? Golems? Divine knights?"

Edward almost laughed.

*Try government-issued infantry.*

Before he could answer, his vision flickered again.

**[SYSTEM NOTICE]**

**Idle Command Phase Detected**

**Tutorial Recommended: Unit Management**

---

A new interface unfolded beside his vision.

Lists appeared.

---

**ACTIVE UNITS**

* Infantry Squad Alpha (20)

* Heavy Support Team (4)

* Medical Team (3)

**STATUS:** Awaiting Orders

---

Edward blinked.

He focused on one soldier.

Instantly, detailed information appeared.

---

**Unit ID:** Alpha-03

**Condition:** Optimal

**Ammo:** 87%

**Morale:** Stable

**Loyalty:** Absolute

---

"…They have morale?" Edward whispered.

The system responded instantly.

---

**Units possess adaptive personalities for realistic combat effectiveness.**

---

Edward felt a strange chill.

They weren't robots.

They were individuals created for war.

Sir Roland watched his expression change.

"My lord…?"

Edward shook himself back to reality.

"Sorry. Thinking."

A shout echoed nearby.

"Commander!"

Edward turned.

One of the soldiers approached and saluted sharply.

"Area secured. No remaining hostiles detected."

The knight captain's eyes widened at the word *Commander.*

Edward nodded instinctively.

"Good work."

The soldier returned to duty immediately.

Roland stared.

"They obey you as a king's army would."

Edward hesitated.

"No," he said quietly. "More than that."

Because kings could be disobeyed.

These soldiers could not.

---

### The Weight of Authority

Villagers began gathering cautiously around him.

Whispers spread.

"Hero…"

"Saint…"

"Summoner…"

Edward felt deeply uncomfortable.

He wasn't a hero.

He was a guy who used to argue online about tank designs.

A woman suddenly grabbed his hands.

Tears streamed down her face.

"You saved my children," she said. "Thank you… thank you…"

Edward froze.

He didn't know how to respond.

Slowly, he nodded.

"You're safe now."

The words felt heavier than any weapon.

More people approached.

Gratitude.

Relief.

Hope.

Each one pressed invisible weight onto his shoulders.

The system chimed again.

---

**[NEW FEATURE UNLOCKED]**

**COMMANDER REPUTATION SYSTEM ACTIVATED**

**Current Reputation: LOCAL SAVIOR**

---

"…There's a reputation system too?"

Of course there was.

---

### A New Problem

A scout knight rushed into the square.

"Captain Roland!"

Roland turned sharply. "Report."

"Messenger hawks confirmed—neighboring lords witnessed the battle's light and thunder. Armies are mobilizing."

Edward blinked.

"…Mobilizing?"

Roland's expression darkened.

"They believe a demon lord or forbidden weapon has appeared."

Edward looked at the smoking remains of the Alpha Beast.

Then at the soldiers carrying rifles.

"…That's not entirely unfair."

Roland sighed.

"My lord Edward… whether you intend it or not, you have changed the balance of power."

The words landed heavily.

Edward looked toward the horizon.

He had saved one village.

And accidentally started a political crisis.

The system screen appeared again.

---

**[STRATEGIC ADVISORY]**

**Recommendation: Establish Forward Base**

**Purpose: Defense / Logistics / Diplomatic Stability**

**Deploy Construction Protocol?**

---

Edward stared at the option.

A base.

A permanent presence.

If he accepted…

There was no going back to anonymity.

He looked at the villagers rebuilding their homes.

At injured knights being treated.

At children laughing nervously near soldiers who protected them.

He already knew his answer.

"…Yes," he said softly.

"Begin construction."

---

The ground trembled.

Light spread outward in geometric patterns across an empty field outside the village.

Metal structures began forming from nothing—walls rising, towers assembling, machinery unfolding like giant mechanical flowers.

Knights fell to their knees.

Villagers gasped.

Sir Roland whispered hoarsely:

"…A fortress… born instantly…"

Edward watched silently.

He felt it clearly now.

This world had swords.

Magic.

Kings.

But none of them were prepared for logistics.

And logistics won wars.

Far away, unseen eyes watched through magic once more.

A golden figure smiled faintly.

"The commander builds his castle."

A second voice answered from darkness.

"Then we shall test its walls."
