Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Festival Night

The river town was alive with lanterns, their golden light trembling on the water's surface. Music floated through the air — flutes and pipas weaving melodies that tickled the senses. The Fourth Prince leaned lazily against the balcony of an inn, glass of wine in hand, face shadowed, hair loose over his shoulders.

"Another boring festival," he muttered, though his eyes betrayed him. Not boredom. Anticipation.

Somewhere among the crowd, a whisper of movement caught him — subtle, flowing, precise. He turned.

There, in the heart of the plaza, a figure danced. White silk rippled like water around long, elegant sleeves. A veil obscured the face, tiny silver bells shimmering with each turn. Every movement was poetry, every step measured with perfection.

He didn't know why, but he couldn't look away.

The crowd applauded, enraptured. But for him, the world had narrowed to that figure — that veil, those bells, the fan tucked casually in one hand, a silent promise of skill beneath beauty.

Then the chaos began.

A shout, sharp and panicked, ripped through the festival. Figures lunged from shadows — bandits, perhaps, or worse. Lanterns tipped, water spilled onto cobblestones, and screams pierced the music.

The Prince stiffened, instinct awake. He moved without thought, a shadow slipping down the balcony stairs. The world blurred.

From above, a white silhouette appeared on a nearby roof. Silk flashed. Bells whispered. In an instant, bodies crumpled. A spinning fan caught the moonlight, and the figure vanished.

No one knew who had struck. No one saw the faces. Only the aftermath remained — stunned villagers, scattered lanterns, and the echo of silver bells fading into the night.

The Prince's heart raced.

Not someone weak, he thought. Not someone careless.

And though he did not know it yet, the ghost in silk, and the ghost in shadow, had just marked the beginning of a dangerous, intoxicating dance — one that would not end until both were revealed.
