According to the original plot, these kidnappers were hired by Jasper Sherwood. But Vivian Sterling wasn't among the victims—it was only Nina Donovan. After the Donovan family went bankrupt, she was supposed to be killed and her body dumped in the wilderness.
The plot had changed a bit now, but at least the part where she got kidnapped happened. But... Jasper Sherwood had rescued her...
This baffled Nina. He clearly hated the "Nina" who had destroyed his sister's hope, so why would he go out of his way to come up the mountain and save her?
