Chapter 7 - When the Stars Answered

The sanctuary transformed within minutes.

Peace vanished.

War replaced it.

Bells rang across the towers as warriors flooded the courtyard, armor gleaming beneath torchlight. Mages traced glowing runes into the air, activating protective barriers that shimmered like glass around the cliffs.

Lyra stood at the edge of the training grounds, heart racing as chaos unfolded around her.

She should have been terrified.

Instead—

Energy hummed beneath her skin.

Alive.

Waiting.

Cael approached, fastening dark leather guards around her wrists.

His movements were quick but careful.

"Stay behind the defensive line," he instructed.

"You already know I won't," she replied.

A faint breath of laughter escaped him despite the tension.

"…You never did listen."

He tightened the final strap, his fingers lingering slightly longer than necessary.

Lyra noticed.

He stepped back immediately.

Distance again.

Always distance.

Rowan joined them, sword already drawn.

"Imperial forces approaching from the eastern pass," he reported. "Shadow beasts leading the charge."

Lyra's stomach tightened.

"Those things from the forest?"

"Stronger versions," Rowan said grimly.

The ground trembled.

A horn echoed from beyond the cliffs.

Deep.

Threatening.

Torches along the sanctuary walls flickered violently as dark figures appeared along the horizon—an advancing army cloaked in black banners marked with a silver eclipse.

Fear rippled through the defenders.

Lyra felt it.

Their uncertainty.

Their doubt.

Cael noticed her reaction.

"They're afraid," she whispered.

He nodded.

"They remember what happened the last time the empire came."

She turned toward him.

"And what happened?"

His jaw tightened.

"You defeated them."

Before she could respond, the sky darkened unnaturally.

Shadow creatures surged forward—towering forms made of smoke and bone, eyes glowing like dying stars.

The first barrier shattered on impact.

Mages cried out.

Battle erupted.

Steel clashed.

Magic exploded.

The sanctuary roared to life.

Cael moved instantly, stepping in front of Lyra as creatures leapt over broken defenses.

"Stay close!"

He cut through the first attacker with lethal precision, blue fire trailing his blade. Rowan fought beside him, laughing dangerously as he drove enemies back.

Lyra watched, adrenaline surging.

People were getting hurt.

Falling.

The fear around her grew heavier.

And something inside her refused to stay silent.

Her sigil ignited.

Light crawled up her arm.

Warm.

Familiar.

Calling to her.

A shadow beast broke through the line, charging directly toward a group of healers behind them.

Without thinking, Lyra stepped forward.

Cael noticed instantly.

"Lyra—wait!"

Too late.

She raised her hand.

Power surged through her veins like starlight made physical.

The world slowed.

She could feel everything—

Every heartbeat.

Every movement.

Every fragment of magic surrounding her.

Instinct took over.

Light exploded from her palm.

Not wild.

Not uncontrolled.

Beautiful.

A constellation formed in the air above her, blazing brighter than the moon. Beams of radiant energy struck the advancing creatures, dissolving shadows into showers of silver dust.

The battlefield fell silent.

Everyone stared.

The Starbearer had returned.

Lyra lowered her hand slowly, stunned by what she had done.

"…I knew how," she breathed.

Cheers erupted from the sanctuary defenders.

Hope surged through the crowd.

But Cael wasn't cheering.

He was running toward her.

Fear written openly across his face.

He grabbed her shoulders.

"Are you hurt?"

"No," she said, still breathless. "I'm fine."

His grip tightened slightly.

Relief flooding through him.

"You scared me."

The vulnerability in his voice made her heart ache.

Before she could respond—

The sky split open.

A massive wave of dark magic crashed toward the sanctuary walls.

An imperial mage hovered above the battlefield, cloaked in swirling shadows.

His voice echoed unnaturally.

"Starbearer!"

Every warrior froze.

The mage pointed directly at Lyra.

"You belong to the empire."

Fear rippled through the crowd again.

Lyra stepped forward instinctively.

But Cael moved faster.

He placed himself between her and the enemy.

Sword raised.

Unyielding.

"You will not touch her."

The mage laughed.

"Still playing guardian, Shadow Knight? You cannot defy prophecy forever."

The words struck Cael hard.

Lyra noticed.

"What does he mean?" she whispered.

Cael didn't answer.

The enemy lifted his hand—

Dark energy spiraled downward.

Straight toward Lyra.

Everything happened at once.

Cael turned, pulling her into his arms as the attack struck.

Light and shadow collided violently.

The force threw them both to the ground.

Dust filled the air.

Lyra's ears rang.

For a terrifying moment—

She couldn't see him move.

"Cael?" she whispered.

No response.

Panic surged.

"Cael!"

He groaned softly beneath her.

Alive.

Relief crashed through her so strongly she nearly cried.

His arm remained wrapped protectively around her.

Even unconscious—

He had shielded her first.

Emotion overwhelmed her.

Without thinking, she placed her glowing hand over his chest.

Starlight flowed into him instinctively.

Healing.

Gentle.

Sacred.

His eyes opened slowly.

The first thing he saw—

Was her.

Tears shining in her eyes.

"…You're safe," he murmured.

She laughed shakily.

"You're the one who almost died!"

A faint smile touched his lips.

"Worth it."

Her breath caught.

Something inside her shifted.

Deeper than memory.

Deeper than destiny.

She realized the terrifying truth—

She was falling in love with him again.

Above them, the imperial mage retreated as sanctuary forces pushed the enemy back.

The battle began to turn.

Hope burned brighter.

But Lyra barely noticed.

Because Cael's hand still held hers tightly.

As if letting go was no longer an option.
