Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3

THE COUNCIL FIRE

The Crimson Moon Pack grounds lay deep within the forest, where ancient trees formed a natural ring around a stone clearing blackened by centuries of fire. Aurelia felt it the moment she stepped inside the boundary. The air shifted. Heavier. Charged with power and judgment.

Wolves watched from the shadows.

Not all of them were shifted, but their eyes gave them away. Gold. Amber. Silver. Every gaze tracked her movement with unnerving focus, assessing her like she was both prize and threat.

Kael walked beside her, close enough that their arms nearly brushed. He hadn't touched her since the house, but his presence anchored her, the bond humming softly as if reminding her she wasn't alone.

At the center of the clearing stood Alpha Rowan Blackthorne.

Tall. Broad. His power pressed outward like heat from a fire, unmistakable and dominant. His silver-streaked dark hair marked years of rule, and his gaze sharpened the moment it landed on Aurelia.

"So," Rowan said, voice calm but carrying easily through the clearing, "this is the one."

Aurelia stiffened. Kael's jaw clenched.

"She has a name," Kael said evenly.

Rowan's brow lifted slightly. "Of course she does. And she's standing in my territory."

Aurelia met the Alpha's gaze without flinching. "Then I suggest you speak to me directly."

A ripple of surprise moved through the gathered wolves. Rowan studied her more closely now, something thoughtful flickering behind his eyes.

"Bold," he said. "Or foolish."

"Depends on what you plan to do next," she replied.

The Alpha's lips curved, not quite a smile. "Fair enough." He turned his attention back to Kael. "You felt it first."

"Yes," Kael said.

"And you didn't mark her."

Kael's spine went rigid. "No."

Murmurs spread. Aurelia's heart pounded. She didn't know all the rules, but she understood the weight of what hadn't happened.

Rowan stepped closer, circling her slowly. "She carries the Eclipse Moon signature," he said. "Rare. Dangerous."

Aurelia swallowed. "I didn't ask for it."

"No one ever does," Rowan replied. "But power doesn't care about consent."

The words sent a chill through her.

Rowan stopped in front of Kael. "You know what the elders will demand."

"Yes."

"And you still brought her here."

Kael lifted his head, eyes burning. "I brought her here so she wouldn't be hunted."

Silence fell, thick and heavy.

Rowan studied his Beta for a long moment, then nodded once. "Very well. We'll proceed according to law."

Aurelia's breath hitched. "What law?"

"The Trial of Claim," Rowan said.

Kael spun toward him. "No."

Rowan's gaze hardened. "It's already begun."

The fire at the center of the clearing flared suddenly, flames leaping high as the moon climbed above the treetops. The wolves around them shifted restlessly, anticipation thick in the air.

Rowan's voice rang out. "Under the Eclipse Moon, a woman of power must be claimed… or released."

Aurelia's heart slammed against her ribs. "Claimed by who?"

Rowan's eyes flicked to Kael.

Then, slowly, to the shadows beyond the fire.

A second presence stepped forward.

Tall. Confident. Smiling like he already owned the night.

Seren Valerius.

The Alpha of Shadow Vale.

Aurelia's pulse stuttered as his gaze locked onto hers, hunger and calculation gleaming in equal measure.

"Well," Seren said smoothly, "this just became interesting."

Kael growled, low and lethal.

And Aurelia realized the truth all at once.

She wasn't standing at a council.

She was standing at the beginning of a war.

The moment Seren Valerius stepped fully into the firelight, the air shifted again.

Where Rowan's presence was solid and unyielding, Seren's was sharp and intoxicating, like a blade wrapped in silk. His dark hair was tied back at his nape, his posture relaxed in a way that spoke of absolute confidence. His gaze never left Aurelia, as if the rest of the clearing had ceased to exist.

"Well," Seren repeated, eyes glinting, "you weren't exaggerating."

Aurelia resisted the urge to step back. Something about him unsettled her in a way Kael never had. Where Kael grounded her, Seren pulled at something darker, more dangerous.

"You were not invited," Kael said coldly.

Seren chuckled. "And yet, here I am. Funny how the Eclipse Moon has a way of blurring boundaries."

Rowan's expression hardened. "State your purpose, Alpha."

Seren inclined his head slightly, a gesture that somehow managed to be respectful and mocking all at once. "I felt the awakening. Same as you. A signature like hers doesn't stay quiet." His gaze dipped briefly, slow and deliberate, before lifting again. "And Shadow Vale has just as much right to participate in a Trial of Claim."

Aurelia's chest tightened. "Participate?" she echoed. "You're talking about me like I'm a prize."

Seren's smile softened, but his eyes remained sharp. "No. I'm talking about you like you're power."

Kael moved subtly, placing himself half a step in front of her. "She's not yours."

"Not marked," Seren countered easily. "Which makes her fair."

A low snarl rippled through the pack. Aurelia felt it vibrate through her bones, the bond responding to Kael's anger, flaring hot and insistent.

Rowan raised a hand, silencing the gathering wolves. "Enough." His gaze cut between the two Alphas. "The law is clear. Under an Eclipse Moon, the unclaimed must choose… or be chosen through trial."

Aurelia's breath caught. "You're saying I have no say."

Rowan's voice was steady, but not unkind. "You have one. You may accept a claim willingly."

Her gaze flicked to Kael, whose expression was carved from stone, restraint barely holding back something feral.

"And if I don't?" she asked.

Rowan didn't answer.

Seren did.

"Then the strongest bond wins," he said softly.

Kael's control snapped just enough for his wolf to surface, eyes flashing gold. "Touch her and you lose that hand."

Seren laughed quietly, clearly enjoying the tension. "There it is. I was wondering how long you'd pretend this was about duty."

Aurelia felt the pull split sharply then, tugging her in two opposite directions. One steady, protective, burning with loyalty. The other wild, seductive, promising power without restraint.

Her knees weakened.

Rowan's gaze sharpened. "She's reacting."

The fire surged higher, flames turning pale silver as the moon reached its peak. Aurelia gasped as energy coursed through her, heat racing along her skin like liquid fire. Symbols etched into the ancient stones around the clearing began to glow.

Seren's smile vanished. "That's not supposed to happen yet."

Kael swore under his breath and grabbed Aurelia's hand. The contact sent a shock through both of them, sharp and electric. The bond roared to life, undeniable now.

Aurelia cried out as power rushed through her, instinct screaming to choose, to claim, to end the tension tearing her apart.

Rowan stepped back, eyes wide. "By the Moon…"

Seren's gaze darkened, hunger giving way to calculation. "She's stronger than the prophecy said."

Kael turned to Aurelia, voice rough but unwavering. "Listen to me. Whatever you feel, whatever they tell you—you are not alone. Do you hear me?"

Her vision blurred, the clearing spinning as the firelight fractured into silver and shadow. But through it all, she felt Kael. Solid. Anchoring. Real.

"I hear you," she whispered.

The ground trembled beneath their feet.

And somewhere deep within Aurelia, something ancient opened its eyes.
