Chapter 8 — The Secret Letter
The morning sun barely lit the mansion when Lina returned to her room. She had spent the previous night replaying the events of the public appearance over and over in her mind — the flashing cameras, the whispers of the crowd, and that woman in crimson who had winked at Adrian.
Lina set her bag down and froze. A folded envelope lay on her desk. She didn't remember seeing it before.
Carefully, she picked it up. No name. No stamp. Just her handwriting, or at least something that looked like it.
Her hands trembled as she opened it. Inside was a single sheet of paper, written in elegant, precise script:
"Be careful, Miss Lina. Not everyone around Adrian Vale is as loyal as they seem. Someone in his circle is watching you — and not all eyes are friendly. Trust no one completely. Not even those closest to you. Secrets will come to light. Some will hurt. Some will betray. Stay alert."
Lina's heart pounded. She reread the letter three times, hoping the words would change, but they didn't. Someone was plotting against her — someone inside the mansion, someone who knew her routine.
Her mind raced. Staff? Family? Adrian himself?
A sudden knock at the door made her jump.
"Miss Lina, breakfast is ready," the butler said politely. Lina nodded, trying to calm herself, tucking the letter into her bag.
At the dining room, Adrian was already seated, reviewing a stack of documents. He didn't glance up when she entered.
"Did you sleep well?" he asked finally, his tone unreadable.
"Yes," Lina said softly. She kept the letter hidden, unsure if she should show him.
Adrian's eyes flicked toward her bag. "Everything alright?"
"Yes, sir," she said quickly, forcing a calm expression.
He nodded, satisfied — or pretending to be. Lina couldn't tell.
After breakfast, she retreated to her room, reading the letter again. She couldn't ignore it. Whoever had sent it knew something important, something dangerous.
That evening, she decided to investigate quietly. She wandered the halls, paying attention to staff movements, listening for whispers, and observing everything around her.
Near the study, she saw it — a faint shadow moving behind the curtains. She held her breath, trying not to make a sound.
And then she heard a whisper.
"Soon… everything will be revealed."
The voice was cold, almost taunting, and it vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
Lina's hands shook. Her heart raced. She realized the mansion was no longer just a home or a contract — it was a maze of secrets, dangers, and betrayals.
And she had no idea which of them she could trust.
