Chapter 118 - Chapter Sixty-Seven – The Name Across the Stars

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody even seemed capable of breathing properly.

The message remained displayed across every screen.

IS ELENA STILL ALIVE?

Four words.

Only four.

Yet they carried more weight than any threat.

Because threats were simple.

Threats could be fought.

This?

This meant someone already knew her name.

Someone impossibly far away.

Someone who should not exist.

Adrian slowly pointed at the screen.

"No."

Silence.

"No, absolutely not."

Nobody argued.

Because everyone felt exactly the same.

Elena stared at the message.

Unable to look away.

Her mind replayed the earlier transmission.

Original Status: Deceased.

Current Status: Anomaly.

They Found You.

Now this.

Someone asking if she was alive.

As if her survival mattered.

As if it changed something.

Alessandro stepped forward.

Positioning himself slightly in front of her.

A subtle movement.

But everyone noticed.

Including Iris.

"Do not answer."

She spoke immediately.

"No one responds."

Adrian nodded vigorously.

"Best idea we've heard all day."

Valentina remained silent.

Which was unusual.

Extremely unusual.

"Valentina."

Elena's voice was calm.

"What aren't you saying?"

Several seconds passed.

Then the AI finally answered.

"I have encountered this pattern before."

The room froze.

"What?"

Adrian asked.

Valentina continued.

"Not the message."

A pause.

"The structure."

Every eye turned toward the nearest screen.

"The question wasn't random."

Elena frowned.

"Explain."

The AI processed rapidly.

Lines of data appeared.

Symbols.

Mathematical sequences.

Communication models.

"It follows a verification protocol."

Nobody liked where this was going.

"Verification of what?"

Alessandro asked.

Valentina's response came immediately.

"Identity."

Silence.

The word landed heavily.

Identity.

Not location.

Not power.

Not military capability.

Identity.

The object wasn't asking if Earth existed.

It wasn't asking if humanity survived.

It was verifying a specific person.

Elena.

Iris looked visibly disturbed.

"That means they're confirming a timeline."

Nobody liked that sentence.

At all.

"A timeline?"

Elena repeated.

Iris nodded.

"The previous records mention temporal inconsistencies."

The room became very quiet.

Because that phrase sounded dangerously familiar.

Temporal inconsistencies.

Timeline deviations.

Anomalies.

Everything pointed toward the same impossible conclusion.

Somehow—

Elena surviving wasn't supposed to happen.

Adrian buried his face in his hands.

"I miss fighting gangsters."

Nobody laughed.

Because nobody was feeling particularly humorous anymore.

The screen suddenly flickered.

The question remained.

But something changed.

A timer appeared beneath it.

AWAITING RESPONSE

00:59

The room erupted.

"What?"

"Why is there a timer?"

"Valentina?"

"I did not create the timer."

The countdown continued.

Fifty-eight.

Fifty-seven.

Fifty-six.

Steady.

Relentless.

"Can we remove it?" Elena asked.

"No."

"Disconnect the screen."

"I already tried."

"Destroy the screen."

Alessandro grabbed a nearby chair.

Nobody stopped him.

The chair slammed into the display.

The screen shattered.

Glass exploded across the floor.

The timer remained.

Floating in the air.

Unaffected.

Nobody said a word.

Because reality had apparently stopped caring about rules.

The countdown continued.

Forty-three.

Forty-two.

Forty-one.

Iris looked genuinely alarmed now.

"This wasn't in the records."

"Wonderful."

Adrian sighed.

"New nightmare unlocked."

The floating display suddenly changed.

A second line appeared beneath the countdown.

FAILURE TO RESPOND WILL BE INTERPRETED AS CONFIRMATION

Silence.

Then Adrian pointed dramatically.

"Then why ask the question?"

Nobody answered.

Because he had a point.

If silence counted as confirmation—

then the question wasn't actually a question.

It was a test.

Or a warning.

Or something worse.

The countdown reached thirty seconds.

Elena's heartbeat quickened.

Not from panic.

From realization.

The object wasn't trying to find her.

It already had.

This was simply confirmation.

The final piece of a puzzle that had started long before Earth ever noticed it.

Twenty seconds.

Nineteen.

Eighteen.

The room remained completely still.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Alessandro's hand slowly found hers.

The gesture was subtle.

Steady.

Certain.

A reminder.

Whatever happened next—

she wouldn't face it alone.

Ten seconds.

Nine.

Eight.

The floating display pulsed brighter.

Seven.

Six.

Five.

Every light in the mansion flickered.

Four.

Three.

The air itself seemed to vibrate.

Two.

One.

The countdown reached zero.

Silence.

Complete silence.

Then—

the question vanished.

The timer vanished.

Everything vanished.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then a final message appeared.

Only one sentence.

A sentence that made every person in the room go cold.

CONFIRMATION RECEIVED. PREPARE FOR CONTACT.

And somewhere beyond the darkness between stars—

something changed course.
