Cherreads

Chapter 222 - Chapter 222: Just Luck?

Play resumed.

Griezmann's corner curled in perfectly, finding Godín inside the box. But his header drifted just over the bar.

Even so, Atlético Madrid's fans immediately responded with thunderous applause and cheers, urging their team forward. The cheers quickly turned into singing. The Calderón roared like a volcano on the verge of eruption. Wave after wave of sound crashed down.

Klopp glanced toward the stands and bared his teeth slightly. He felt a flicker of tension. The atmosphere in this stadium was ferocious. At this moment, he couldn't help but worry for his players. Under this kind of pressure, no away side had it easy.

Time ticked away.

Dortmund focused entirely on defending. Soon, the match passed the eightieth minute. As the clock kept running, the American broadcast commentator voiced the words that made Atlético fans watching from home tighten with anxiety.

"Time is running out for Atlético Madrid."

Shane Carter dropped deep to receive the ball.

Everyone was anxious. But he couldn't be. He was the team's core. If he lost his composure, the entire game would spiral out of control. And at that point, scoring wouldn't even matter. They might concede again.

He played the ball out wide. Adrián didn't hesitate. He whipped in a cross immediately.

Shane sighed inwardly. He might be calm, but his teammates clearly weren't. A hopeful cross like that was too predictable. Easy to defend.

Inside the box, Subotić rose high and beat Costa to the ball, powering a header clear. The ball flew out of the area, arcing toward midfield.

And right then, Shane was already there.

He looked like he was still scanning for a pass. His head moved left and right, his body shaping as if to control the ball. Dortmund's defensive line instinctively tightened, reacting to the threat.

Then Shane cushioned the ball with his chest.

As it dropped, he swung his right leg through. In truth, he could have taken a touch first. But he didn't. He locked onto the falling ball and at the perfect height, struck it cleanly with his instep.

Boom.

The ball exploded off his foot, screaming toward goal.

"Shane Carter. A first-time volley from distance," the American commentator blurted out, startled.

On the touchline, Klopp frowned. From nearly thirty meters out, what was he thinking? Had even he lost patience?

Klopp lifted his head, tracking the ball's flight, and suddenly froze.

The ball sailed over the defenders' heads. Everyone looked up. Dortmund's players assumed it would drift harmlessly out.

But then the ball bent. Violently.

A savage arc tore through the air, curving toward the top corner. The spinning ball seemed to rip open space itself, as if time had slowed to a crawl.

In the stands, Atlético fans froze mid-motion, fists clenched, knees bent, ready to erupt.

Weidenfeller launched himself across goal. His fingertips brushed the ball.

But it wasn't enough.

Swish.

The ball slammed into the net behind him.

And in that instant, time snapped back to normal.

Boom.

The Calderón exploded. It felt like an earthquake. The stands trembled. The pitch trembled. Every Atlético fan trembled with it.

On the sideline, Simeone dropped to his knees, arms raised to the sky, roaring in triumph.

"SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!"

Mario leapt to his feet in the Spanish commentary box.

"Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable. What a goal! Atlético Madrid have equalized! A massive, massive goal! And that's Shane Carter's thirteenth goal in this season's Champions League, just one shy of Messi's record from last year."

"That's a world-class strike," the American analyst said from the studio. "Chest control, first-time volley. Incredible curve, pinpoint placement. Perfect execution."

German commentator Schmitz was stunned for a moment. Then he recovered.

"Shane has scored a stunning goal, and Atlético have leveled the match. But it doesn't change much. Even with the aggregate tied, Dortmund still go through on away goals. Atlético had no real answers before this. They've been forced into speculative long-range efforts, even from a midfielder like Shane. That shows Dortmund's tactics are working."

Every wonder goal carries a touch of luck. On that point, Schmitz wasn't entirely wrong. And more importantly, even with the goal, Atlético were still at a disadvantage.

Shane knew it too.

So even after scoring such a spectacular goal, he didn't celebrate. He turned immediately and sprinted back, waving his teammates forward.

"Get the ball. Move."

There was no time to waste.

As the ball hit the net, Costa roared in celebration near the six-yard box. Then he charged into the goal, grabbed the ball, and sprinted back toward midfield.

The aggregate score was now level. And for Atlético, they only needed one more goal. From needing two to needing just one. The task had suddenly become far more achievable.

Klopp's brow furrowed deeply. He felt the pressure rising. But logic told him that goal, as brilliant as it was, wasn't something you could rely on. If even Shane had resorted to a strike like that, it meant he had found no other solution against their compact defense.

Were they really supposed to fear another one like it?

"That was just luck," Klopp said firmly to Schmelzer.

He needed his players to stay calm.
