Chapter 11 – The Truth Between Us
The school courtyard was almost empty after classes ended. The orange light of the evening sun stretched across the pavement, making everything feel quiet and calm.
Liam leaned against the railing near the basketball court, staring at his phone but not really reading anything. His mind was somewhere else.
Footsteps approached.
He didn't need to look up to know who it was.
"Liam."
Emma's voice was soft but steady.
He lifted his head slowly. She stood a few steps away, her backpack hanging from one shoulder. A small breeze moved strands of her hair across her face.
"You said you wanted to talk," she said.
Liam nodded and slipped his phone into his pocket.
"Yeah… I did."
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence wasn't awkward, but it carried the weight of everything that had happened recently.
Emma finally broke it.
"You've been avoiding me."
Liam sighed.
"I know."
"Why?"
Her question was simple, but it hit harder than he expected.
Liam rubbed the back of his neck, looking down at the ground.
"Because things are getting complicated."
Emma frowned slightly.
"Complicated how?"
Liam hesitated. He had been thinking about this conversation for days, but now that it was happening, the words felt stuck.
Finally, he looked up.
"Because I like you, Emma."
The words hung in the air.
Emma blinked, clearly surprised.
Liam continued before he lost the courage.
"I didn't plan it. I didn't expect it. It just… happened."
Emma's heart started beating faster. She looked away for a moment, trying to process what he had said.
"But if you like me," she said slowly, "why avoid me?"
Liam gave a small, helpless laugh.
"Because I didn't know if you felt the same way."
Emma stayed quiet.
The truth was… she didn't know either.
When Liam was around, things felt different. Brighter somehow. But she had been afraid to admit it—even to herself.
"I don't want to mess up our friendship," Liam added quietly.
Emma finally looked at him again.
"You won't."
"How can you be sure?"
She took a step closer.
"Because friendships don't break just because someone is honest."
Liam studied her face, searching for any sign that he had said something wrong.
But Emma didn't look upset.
She looked thoughtful.
"Liam," she said gently, "I don't have everything figured out yet."
"That's okay."
"But I do know one thing."
"What?"
Emma smiled a little.
"I'm glad you told me."
Relief spread across Liam's face.
For the first time in days, the tension between them started to fade.
They began walking slowly toward the school gate together.
Neither of them noticed someone watching from the other side of the courtyard.
Sophia.
Her arms were crossed as she stared at them.
"So that's how it is," she muttered under her breath.
A small, determined smile appeared on her face.
"Let's see how long this lasts."
