Chapter 12 - Chapter Eleven: New Routines

The first week of living together was a whirlwind of new routines and old habits clashing and merging. Jay and Keifer navigated their new life with a mix of laughter, frustration, and a growing understanding of each other's quirks. Here's a day-by-day breakdown of their first week as official cohabitants.

Day 1: The Battle of the Bathroom

Jay woke up earlier than Keifer, a habit she'd had since medical school. She tiptoed to the bathroom, only to find Keifer's electric toothbrush charging on the counter. Her eyes scanned the space, taking in the two towels hanging on the rack, the shaving cream and razor by the sink, and the manly body wash in the shower. She sighed, realizing that sharing a bathroom would be an adjustment.

When Keifer woke up, he found Jay in the kitchen, already dressed and making coffee. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, kissing her neck. "Morning, beautiful."

Jay smiled but held up a finger. "Wait, let me guess. You're one of those people who takes forever in the bathroom, right?"

Keifer chuckled. "Guilty. Why?"

"Because I'm a 'get in, get out' kind of person. I can't be late for my morning rounds."

Keifer nodded, understanding. "I'll make sure to clear the way for you in the mornings. And I'll pick up some of those disposable razors for you. You know, for when you need to... shave."

Jay raised an eyebrow. "You mean when I need to remove the forest growing on your legs?"

Keifer laughed. "Exactly."

Day 2: The Great Closet Conundrum

Jay's clothes were still in suitcases, scattered around the bedroom. Keifer watched her struggle to find something to wear, her brow furrowed in frustration. He realized this was a problem he could solve.

"Hey, why don't we clear out some space in the closet for your things?" he suggested.

Jay looked at him, surprised. "You wouldn't mind?"

"Of course not. It's your space too, now."

Keifer spent the afternoon rearranging his closet, making room for Jay's clothes. He even installed a second rod and some shelves for her shoes. When Jay saw what he'd done, she was touched. She hugged him tightly. "Thank you, Keifer. This means a lot."

Keifer smiled, happy to have made her happy. "You're welcome, Jay. I want you to feel at home here."

Day 3: The Breakfast Dilemma

Jay was used to grabbing a quick breakfast bar on her way to the hospital. Keifer, on the other hand, was a sit-down, full-meal kind of guy. Their breakfast routines clashed on their third morning together.

Keifer sat at the table, enjoying his eggs and bacon, while Jay rushed around, trying to find something to eat. She grabbed a protein bar and started to leave.

"Hey, wait," Keifer called out. "Can't you stay and eat with me?"

Jay looked at her watch. "I'm already late. I'll grab something at the hospital."

Keifer nodded, understanding. "Okay. But how about we plan our breakfasts for the rest of the week? That way, we can make sure we're both taken care of."

Jay smiled. "That sounds like a great idea."

Day 4: The Evening Routine

Jay worked late, and when she finally got home, she found Keifer in the living room, surrounded by papers. He looked up when she walked in, a smile spreading across his face.

"Hey, you," he said, standing up to greet her. "How was your day?"

Jay sighed, kicking off her shoes. "Long. But good. Yours?"

"Productive," Keifer replied. "I made dinner. It's in the oven, keeping warm."

Jay's eyes widened. "You cooked?"

Keifer laughed. "Yeah, I can cook, you know. I just don't get the chance very often."

Jay hugged him. "Thank you. This is perfect."

Over dinner, they talked about their days, their plans for the weekend, and anything else that came to mind. It was the first time they'd had a chance to just... be together, without the chaos of the move or their families.

Day 5: The Laundry War

Jay was a 'wash as you go' kind of person. Keifer, on the other hand, was a 'when the hamper is full' kind of person. Their laundry habits clashed on their fifth day together.

Jay found herself running out of clean scrubs and had to dig through Keifer's hamper to find something to wear. She emerged from the laundry room, hands on her hips, looking determined.

"Keifer," she said, "we need to talk about our laundry situation."

Keifer looked up from his laptop, surprised. "Our laundry situation?"

"Yes. I can't keep running out of clean clothes because you're hoarding yours in the hamper."

Keifer chuckled. "Okay, fair enough. How about this: I'll do a load every other day, and you can do a load on the days in between?"

Jay nodded. "Deal. And I'll make sure to put your clothes in the dryer so they don't mildew."

Keifer raised an eyebrow. "You do that?"

Jay laughed. "Unfortunately, yes. I've turned many a pair of scrubs into moldy rags."

Day 6: The Grocery Store Showdown

Jay and Keifer decided to go grocery shopping together. They walked down the aisles, each of them adding items to the cart. They disagreed on brands, on what was a necessity and what was a luxury, on whether or not to get organic. They bickered and laughed their way through the store, and by the time they reached the checkout, they were both exhausted but happy.

"I think we make a good team," Keifer said as they loaded the bags into the car.

Jay smiled. "We do, don't we?"

Day 7: The Sunday Routine

On their seventh day together, they fell into a comfortable Sunday routine. They slept in late, made breakfast together, and then Keifer read the newspaper while Jay caught up on medical journals. They took a long walk in the park, hand in hand, enjoying the crisp autumn air. They stopped at a café for coffee and shared a piece of chocolate cake, laughing at nothing in particular.

As they walked home, Jay leaned her head on Keifer's shoulder. "This is nice," she said. "This is what I want. This is home."

Keifer squeezed her hand. "This is our home, Jay. And I'm glad you feel at home here."

And so, their first week of living together came to an end. It hadn't been perfect. They'd argued and laughed and learned about each other's quirks and habits. But they'd also found a rhythm, a balance. They'd found a home. Together.
