Chapter 17 - “That’s Not True.”

It happened during lunch.

Nothing dramatic.

Just a normal Tuesday.

The group was sitting in their usual spot — though "usual" had started to feel different.

Grace was sitting between Zoey and Ella.

Julian was across from her.

Dylan and Ethan were arguing over something dumb.

David was trying to finish his food before Ethan stole it.

Nate and Adrian were half-listening.

Lucy was next to Zara.

Theo sat between Adrian and Zara.

The conversation shifted when Dylan mentioned the upcoming inter-class competition.

"We should sign up as a team," he said. "Like last year."

Grace looked up slightly. "That could be fun."

Zara tilted her head.

"Oh… I didn't know you guys did that last year."

"We did," Zoey said quickly.

"It was Grace's idea," Ethan added casually.

Zara smiled softly.

"Really? That's surprising."

The word hung there.

Grace blinked. "Surprising?"

Zara waved her hand lightly. "I just mean… you don't really seem like the type to lead things."

Silence.

It wasn't loud.

It wasn't cruel.

It was smooth.

Almost harmless.

But it landed.

Lucy glanced at Grace.

Theo frowned slightly.

Grace opened her mouth —

But Julian spoke first.

"That's not true."

His voice wasn't loud.

But it was firm.

Everyone looked at him.

Zara blinked, still smiling. "I didn't mean it in a bad way."

Julian didn't smile back.

"She organized half the stuff we did last year."

He looked directly at Zara now.

"And most of this group started because of her."

The table went quieter.

Dylan nodded slowly. "Yeah."

Ethan added, "She's the reason we even talk."

David shrugged. "Facts."

Grace stared at her tray.

Zara's smile didn't drop.

But it tightened.

"Oh," she said softly. "I didn't know."

Julian leaned back slightly.

"Now you do."

The air shifted.

Lucy looked between Grace and Julian.

Something clicked.

Because Zara hadn't attacked directly.

She'd suggested.

She'd framed it as observation.

But Julian had shut it down immediately.

Theo watched Grace carefully.

She hadn't defended herself.

She hadn't argued.

She hadn't even looked up.

That bothered him more than the comment.

After a moment, Dylan changed the subject loudly.

"Anyway, we're signing up. Grace, you're team captain again."

Grace looked up at that.

"I didn't say—"

"You are," Zoey insisted.

Ella nodded.

Julian gave her a small look.

One that said: Don't shrink.

Grace hesitated.

Then nodded once.

"Fine."

Across the table, Zara was quiet now.

Observing.

Adjusting.

Because this was the first time someone had openly contradicted her.

And it hadn't been Grace.

It had been Julian.

Later, when the group split to head to class, Lucy slowed her steps beside Julian.

"You didn't have to say that," she said.

"Yes, I did."

Lucy looked thoughtful.

"Do you think she meant it like that?"

Julian met her eyes.

"You're smart, Lucy."

That was all he said.

But it was enough.

In the hallway, Theo caught up to Grace.

"You didn't say anything."

Grace shrugged. "Didn't need to."

"Why?"

She looked at him calmly.

"Because if someone believes it, explaining won't change their mind."

That sentence stayed with him the rest of the day.

And for the first time since Zara joined…

The balance shifted slightly.

Not because of drama.

Not because of shouting.

But because someone finally said:

"That's not true."
