Chapter 2 - Lines of Authority

Finance Department | Kira

Kira's desk was already waiting for her.

That alone made her uneasy.

Her small open cubical was right beside Milo's office, close enough that the silver-blonde woman could see her without standing up, close enough that Kira felt watched all the time. The desk was sleek and black, matching everything else on the floor. One monitor. A neat stack of files. And a nameplate, already engraved:

KIRA Ellis

Junior Auditor

Kira blinked. "That was… fast."

"It was arranged," Milo said.

Kira smiled without thinking. "That's very organized."

Milo did not return the smile.

First time she saw her name on a desk…Kira reached to touch the nameplate but misjudged the space. Her bag slipped from her shoulder, brushed the chair, and fell softly onto the floor.

In the deep silence, the sound felt far too loud.

She froze.

Milo stood beside her, watching calmly.

Kira bent quickly to pick up the bag. "Sorry. I didn't…..actually my strap slipped."

Milo said nothing. She only pointed at the chair.

"You will sit here."

"Oh…Yes." Kira nodded and tried to sit down, but the chair rolled back slightly. She caught herself, adjusted it, and sat properly this time. She folded her hands on the desk, trying her best to look professional.

Milo ignored

"This floor handles internal oversight," Milo said as she walked away. "Accounting, compliance, and strategic audits. You are not permitted on executive floors without written authorization."

Kira nodded quickly. "Yes."

Milo paused and turned back. "Moonlight Corporation is divided into five primary verticals."

Kira straightened….Focus…..This matters.

"Energy, infrastructure, defense manufacturing, logistics, and financial holdings," Milo said. "Each vertical operates independently."

"And the board?" Kira asked carefully.

"The board exists," Milo replied. "But it does not rule."

Kira hesitated. "Then… Mr. Leo…..?"

Milo's eyes flicked briefly…

"He rules," she said. "The board answers to him."

Kira swallowed. "Understood."

"Your audit access is limited," Milo continued. "Transactional records only. No historical ledgers….No personnel files…..No legacy accounts."

Kira frowned slightly. "Some discrepancies tend to hide in…."

Milo stepped closer.

Kira stopped speaking at once.

Milo studied her quietly.

Kira gave a small, nervous smile. "I follow rules, I promise."

That earned her nothing….but Milo stepped back.

"You will audit what is assigned," Milo said….."Nothing else."

"Yes," Kira said firmly.

Milo returned to her office. The glass door closed softly behind her.

Kira let out a slow breath and turned to her computer.

The files opened quickly.

Everything looked perfect.

Too perfect.

Every number matched. Every record balanced. But when Kira compared dates and timings, she noticed small details…tiny delays, repeated patterns, movements that felt planned.

She leaned closer and knocked her pen onto the floor.

She sighed, bent to pick it up, and hit her knee on the desk.

"Ow," she whispered.

Rubbing her knee, she sat up straight and focused again.

Something wasn't right.

She could feel it.

Executive Floor | Leo

High above, on the top floor, Leo paced his office.

He tried calling again.

Disconnected.

For the fifth time.

His anger boiled over.

He typed a message so hard it felt like he might break the phone.

Answer my call right now, or I will come there myself.

He dialed again.

This time, the call connected.

"Are you mad, Lucas?" Leo shouted.

On the other end, Lucas Finch sounded calm.

"Calm down. I was in a meeting," Lucas said. "Sorry for disconnecting. How can I help?"

"Stop this nonsense," Leo snapped. "How could you send a human here? And a fresher? Have you lost your mind?"

Lucas laughed.

Actually laughed.

"With respect," Lucas said lightly, "that's exactly why I sent her."

Leo stopped pacing. "Explain."

"Every experienced person I send you either quits in fear or becomes too good at their job," Lucas replied. "I don't want to lose more staff."

Leo's eyes narrowed. "Your implication is….."

"My implication," Lucas interrupted cheerfully, "is that I like my senior staff alive, employed, and mentally stable."

"I did not harm anyone," Leo said sharply.

"You threatened one with 'consequences' and stared at another like you were deciding," Lucas replied. "My HR department still hasn't recovered."

Leo pinched the bridge of his nose. "You were contracted to send a professional auditor."

"And I did," Lucas said smoothly. "She's intelligent, disciplined, and observant…but inexperienced enough not to dig where she shouldn't."

"That makes her a liability."

"That makes her safe," Lucas countered. "For you. And for me."

Leo stared at Kira's résumé on his screen, golden eyes filled with frustration.

"And if she becomes curious?" Leo asked quietly.

Lucas sighed. "Then she finishes the audit, submits her report, and leaves. No drama. No missing staff. No lawsuits."

Silence stretched.

Leo took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down.

"She talks too much," he said finally.

"Thats may be she is nerves," Lucas replied. "Try not to traumatize her before lunch."

The call ended.

Leo stood still for a moment, staring through the glass, briefly wondering if killing Lucas would be worth the effort.

Finance Department | Kira

The elevator at the far end of the corridor slammed open.

The sound felt wrong in this quiet place.

Heavy footsteps followed.

Several employees stiffened. Milo's office door slid open at once.

Kira looked up just as a man strode down the corridor like he owned it.

He was tall and broad, built like trouble. His long dark hair fell loose around his face. His suit jacket was open, tie missing, sleeves rolled up as if rules did not matter to him. In this quiet, neat and tidy office he was like a perfect imperfection of God.

He smiled sharply.

"Kira Ellis," he said, stopping right in front of her desk.

She blinked. "Y-yes?"

He leaned down, resting one hand on her desk, his blue sapphire-bright eyes fixed on her.

"I'm Kobi."

"Hello," Kira said faintly.

"I like you already."

Milo appeared beside him instantly.

"You are not authorized to be on this floor."

Kobi straightened lazily. "Relax, sister. I was invited."

"No, you were not," Milo said.

Kobi smirked. "Leo didn't stop me."

As if summoned, Leo appeared behind him…..silent and sudden.

The entire floor went alert.

"What are you doing here?" Leo demanded.

"Meeting your auditor," Kobi replied cheerfully. "I heard she's an outsider."

Leo's gaze hardened. "This is none of your business. Leave."

"Very bossy," Kobi said. "What, want to keep her for yourself?"

He turned back to Kira. "Careful, accountant. This place isn't meant for fragile things like you."

Kira slightly uncomfortable and confused..she has strong body actually little fat..suddenly offended…answered without thinking. "I'm not that fragile."

Leo, Milo and Kobi they all looked at her together

Milo stared at her in disbelief.

Leo went completely still.

Kobi's eyes gleamed. "Good."

He took one step toward her….just opened his mouth to say something….

And suddenly Leo grabbed him and dragged him toward the elevator.

Kobi.." did you hear what she said ?"

He laughed…" cute "

Their boots echoed down the corridor. Kobi's presence lingered like a storm that had passed but not fully gone.

Silence returned.

Milo turned to Kira. "He behaves this way with every ordinary girl," she said sharply. "Finish your work and return to your company. He is no one's cup of tea."

She went back into her office, slamming the door

But Kira couldn't focus.

She stared at her screen, heart racing.

She had come to audit Moonlight Corporation…but she had been noticed for all the wrong reasons.

I will not open my mouth again, she promised herself. Not even a word.

But deep down, she knew…

It was already too late.

She had the sinking feeling that everyone was watching her now.
