The Weight of a Dying SkyThe obsidian crater left by the crimson beam did not smoke; it glowed with a faint, bruised violet light, radiating a cold so profound that it froze the falling snow before it could touch the ground.
Eryndor stood at the edge of the chasm, his chest heaving. Beneath his robes, the cracked seal pulsed with a frantic, blinding rhythm, like a trapped heartbeat desperate to escape a cage of bone and blood. Every breath felt like inhaling crushed glass.
Behind him, the surviving elders and elite disciples of the Cloud Fare Sect had collapsed to their knees. The mighty Nascent Soul experts, who commanded respect across entire continents just hours ago, were now shivering like novices caught in a winter tempest. Their spiritual Qi—their lifelong pride—lay dormant, crushed flat by the residual aura of the watcher in the dark.
Elder Murong pressed his palms hard against the frozen dirt, coughing up a fresh spray of dark crimson. His eyes were wide, hollowed out by a terror more primal than death itself.
"We... we sealed the wrong mountain," Murong whispered, his voice trembling so violently the words barely formed. "Aluki wasn't hiding from us. He was hiding it."
Eryndor didn't turn around. His mind was a battleground. Within his spiritual sea, the black tendrils of the Starved Throne were writhing frantically, trying to weave a thicker barrier against the immense, crushing gaze descending from the higher heavens.
"Kid," Aluki's voice echoed, rough and laced with an uncharacteristic edge of urgency. "The seal's integrity is down to single digits. If that gaze lingers for another minute, your soul will be flayed into raw energy to feed whatever is waiting on the other side of the void."
"Then do something," Eryndor thought back sharply, his expression carved from absolute ice. "You're the ancient cultivator here."
"I'm a ghost hitching a ride on a cosmic bomb!" Aluki barked mentally. "We need a distraction. A massive one."
II. The Eclipse ReturnsBefore Eryndor could answer, a sickening crack split the air above the ridge.
It wasn't thunder. It was the sound of space itself splitting wide open.
High above the clouds, where the crimson eyes stared down with cold amusement, the fabric of the sky began to bleed a thick, ink-like darkness. Shadows pooled together, twisting into massive, towering silhouettes that defied human geometry. Robed figures—dozens of them, clad in garments stitched with silver stars and weeping moons—stepped out of the spatial rift.
At their forefront stood a man wearing a porcelain mask shaped like a cracked sun.
The high priest of the Eclipse Sect. The man whose voice had echoed in Eryndor's mind moments before.
"Magnificent, isn't it?" the high priest spoke, his voice carrying effortlessly across the frozen peaks, rippling with a strange, hypnotic resonance. He slowly lifted his arms, welcoming the oppressive gravity of the crimson eyes as if it were a warm embrace. "For seven centuries, our order whispered into the void. We waited, we bled, we sacrificed nations just to widen the crack. And here you stand, boy—the perfect vessel holding the key."
Wizyan struggled to his feet, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his eyes narrowing into venomous slits. "Eclipse Cult freaks. I should have known you roaches survived the northern purge."
The masked priest chuckled, a dry, rattling sound like dead leaves scraping across stone. "Purge? You cannot purge what the universe itself has chosen to birth anew, rogue. The Cloud Fare Sect hunted the wrong prey today. They thought they were protecting their legacy. In truth, they were just gathering cattle for the slaughter."
With a flick of the priest's wrist, hundreds of dark chains shot outward from the spatial rift, hissing through the air with lethal intent. They weren't aiming for Eryndor—they were aimed at the kneeling elders of the Cloud Fare Sect.
III. A Choice in the BloodClang! Swish!
The dark chains slammed into the snow around Elder Murong and his men, instantly wrapping around their limbs and hoisting them high into the air. The disciples screamed as their spiritual energy was violently siphoned away, funneled upward along the links toward the massive spatial rift.
"Elder Murong!" a disciple shrieked before his voice was choked off, his skin rapidly turning pale as his life force drained.
Murong glared up at the masked priest, defiance flashing momentarily through his terror. "You... you dare slaughter Cloud Fare disciples on our own soil? When the sect master hears of this—"
"The sect master is already dust in the wind, old man," the high priest interrupted coldly. "The world you know ended the moment those eyes opened."
Eryndor watched the carnage unfold with a chilling detachment. The trap had closed. On one side, a cosmic entity watched from beyond reality, waiting to devour his soul. On the other, a fanatical cult sought to use his body as a gateway to reshape the mortal realm in blood and shadow.
Wizyan stepped closer to Eryndor, his usual sarcastic grin entirely gone. His hands glowed with a dangerous, unstable aura. "Hey, partner. If we're going to die here, I want you to know I'm billing you for all the dried fruit I wasted."
Eryndor finally looked at him, a ghost of a smirk touching the corner of his lips. "You won't get a single coin."
Deep within his chest, the cracked seal finally gave way with a sound like a shattering bell.
The hunt was over. The war had begun.
