Chapter 1 - The Mafia’s Quiet Heart

Everyone in the city whispered about the Romano family. They spoke in hushed voices about power, danger, and secrets hidden behind tall iron gates. To most people, the Romano mansion looked like a fortress. To Alessia, it was just the place she accidentally biked past every day on her way to school.

One afternoon, her bicycle chain snapped right in front of the gates.

She sighed, crouching down, fingers getting greasy as she tried to fix it. She didn't notice the tall boy watching from the other side until she heard the gate creak open.

"You'll hurt your hands like that," he said calmly.

Alessia looked up, startled. He wore a black hoodie, his expression serious but not unkind. His eyes held a quiet sadness that didn't match his confident posture.

"I'm fine," she replied, trying to sound brave. "It's just a chain."

He stepped closer anyway. "May I?"

She hesitated. Everyone knew who he was—Luca Romano, the quiet son of the most feared family in the city. Yet he didn't look scary. He just looked… lonely.

"Okay," she said softly.

In less than a minute, Luca fixed the chain and stood up. "There. You should be able to ride now."

"Thanks," she smiled. "You're not as scary as people say."

For a moment, Luca's serious face broke into a small laugh. "You're not as afraid as people expect."

That was how it started.

---

Days turned into weeks. Alessia would "accidentally" pass the mansion more often, and Luca would sometimes be outside, pretending to check his phone. They talked about school, music, and dreams—normal things, things Luca never got to talk about with anyone else.

He told her he hated the life chosen for him. She told him she wanted to become a writer and travel the world. He listened like her dreams mattered more than anything.

One evening, Luca looked more troubled than usual.

"My family… they expect me to take over one day," he admitted quietly. "But I don't want that life."

Alessia studied him carefully. "Then don't."

"It's not that simple."

"Maybe not," she said, "but you're still allowed to choose who you want to be. You're not just your last name."

Those words stayed with him longer than he expected.

---

Trouble came soon after. Rumors spread about conflicts between families. Guards increased around the mansion, and Luca stopped meeting her outside. Alessia worried, but she refused to stay away forever.

One day, she walked right up to the gates and called his name.

He appeared moments later, surprised and anxious. "You shouldn't be here. It's not safe."

"I don't care," she said firmly. "You helped me when my bike broke. I'm helping you now. You don't have to become someone you're not."

He stared at her, stunned by her courage. No one had ever spoken to him like that—like he was just a boy, not a future boss.

"What if I disappoint everyone?" he whispered.

"Then at least you'll be living your own life," she replied.

Silence hung between them, heavy but hopeful.

---

Months later, the whispers about the Romano family changed. People said Luca had chosen a different path—legitimate businesses, charity projects, rebuilding the family name in a new way. Some called him foolish. Others called him brave.

On the day he officially announced his decision, he found Alessia waiting outside the gates with her bike.

"You really did it," she said, eyes shining.

"I couldn't have without you," he admitted.

She smiled teasingly. "So… does the reformed mafia heir still fix bike chains?"

He laughed, the weight in his heart lighter than it had ever been. "Only for one stubborn girl who isn't afraid of me."

They walked side by side, no guards, no fear—just two teenagers choosing their own future.

And for the first time, Luca Romano wasn't known as the mafia's son.

He was simply a boy who learned that love doesn't have to be loud or dangerous… sometimes, it's just the quiet courage of someone who believes you can be better.
