Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: The Commander's Resolve

YoRHa Unit base, Bunker.

The Bunker is a space station positioned in satellite orbit and serves as the headquarters for the YoRHa Unit. Because eighty percent of Earth has been seized by Machine Lifeforms, the Android Resistance could only build their bases on the Moon and in outer space.

At this moment, the Bunker was no longer as solemn and silent as usual. The operators, who were supposed to be performing their individual tasks, were gathered in small groups, whispering secrets that weren't exactly quiet.

In the Bunker's configuration, every YoRHa member descending to Earth is assigned an operator to facilitate communication between the member and the Bunker.

Previously, when the Bunker contacted the pod, the Commander hadn't made any special effort to hide the conversation. Consequently, almost all the operators knew that 2B and the others had encountered a human—and on Earth, no less!

Upon learning this news, the Commander's expression shifted several times. Finally, she forced herself to maintain a poker face and, with a trembling voice, issued the order to protect the human before fleeing the communication hall in a panic. Although no one knew where she was going, she seemed to be heading toward her private quarters.

The Type-O Operator Androids still working in the communication hall witnessed the Commander's flustered departure, which was followed by a flurry of chatter.

"Why did the Commander leave in such a hurry?"

"Perhaps she was a bit panicked to learn that a Human Lord appeared on Earth. After all, the Human Lords have always stayed within the Lunar Human Council on the Moon."

"Has a Human Lord really appeared? I must have 2B take a photo of the Human Lord for me. I'll treasure it alongside that photo of the desert rose she sent me before."

Operator 6O spoke excitedly to the friend in front of her. She was the operator responsible for 2B's communications, so she was currently quite thrilled.

After all, it was 2B who encountered the human, and she was tasked with protecting him. 2B could surely manage to take a simple photo!

"That's so nice, 6O. Could you copy it and send it to me?"

"Yeah, yeah! That's a Human Lord! I'm so jealous of 2B and 9S for actually meeting a Human Lord."

"Hehe..." 6O giggled foolishly behind her veil, as if she were the one who had met the human.

Seeing 6O's reaction, the other operators marveled at the luck of 6O and 21O. 21O was the exclusive operator for 9S.

However, 21O wasn't as lively as 6O. She simply listened coolly to the surrounding conversation while pondering how to ask 9S for a photo of the human without ruining her professional image.

In 9S's eyes, she was a cool and collected older sister; she couldn't let that overly curious kid see this side of her. But she really wanted a photo of the Human Lord, too.

In contrast to the heated discussion in the communication hall, the Commander was in a state of mental turmoil after returning to her room. She was one of the Androids who knew the truth about humanity.

Her true affiliation was neither YoRHa nor the Resistance, but the Human Army.

The Androids of this world are divided into three major factions: the special combat unit 'YoRHa,' the early-deployment ground combat unit known as the 'Resistance,' and the 'Human Army' which maintains high-level contact with the Lunar Human Council.

These three factions each have their own unique emblems, but without a doubt, they are all Androids fighting for humanity and to reclaim the Earth.

However, the 'Human Army' command is the only Android faction that knows the truth about humanity; it was they who fabricated the illusion that humans were still alive.

As a member of the 'Human Army' command and the leader of the YoRHa Unit, she was now caught in a state of disbelief, yet she had no choice but to believe.

All evidence pointed to the extinction of humanity, yet the data sent back by the pod clearly indicated that the individual was indeed a human.

If the genetic mapping comparison was also correct, then even if there was only that one person, it meant a human had survived!

If humanity still lived, then the existence of the YoRHa Unit... the implementation of the YoRHa Project... her act of suppressing her emotions... The Commander crouched down, clutching her head in pain. If humans were still alive, what was the point of everything the 'Human Army' had done!

The so-called YoRHa Project was a plan designed to give all Androids a reason to keep living, to prevent the Android population from falling into mass self-destruction.

Around 3400 AD, after the failure of the Gestalt Project, the remaining Androids explored ways to revive humanity. However, before a method could be found, humanity went extinct around 4200 AD.

Only the Gestalt genes and the remaining Gestalt structural data were recorded and stored in a lunar storage base.

Although the news of humanity's extinction was strictly classified, more and more Androids learned the truth. Once the rumors spread, the combat morale of Androids—having lost the object of their protection—dropped significantly, and some even developed self-destructive tendencies.

Concerned by this, the 'Human Army' command formulated the YoRHa Project to boost the Androids' will to fight and survive.

First, they forged information stating that 'humanity had fled to the Moon' and disseminated it as classified intel among the Resistance. Thus, the 'Lunar Human Council' was born.

To increase credibility, the 'Human Army' command set up a communication server on the lunar surface and conducted regular broadcasts.

Next, the YoRHa Unit was established amidst great fanfare. This was a special operations unit whose members were equipped with the latest combat models.

Through the intentional and unintentional propaganda of the 'Human Army' command, all Androids learned the news.

Humanity had not perished; they had established a Council on the Moon and created the state-of-the-art YoRHa Unit to assist the Resistance in combat.

With all this evidence laid out before them, there was no longer any room for doubt. For the sake of humanity, the morale of all Androids soared once again, and their existential doubts vanished.

This was the full scope of the YoRHa Project. However, every action leaves a trace. To ensure the most perfect conclusion to this plan, the YoRHa Unit had to disappear, because being part of the YoRHa Project itself meant they would eventually uncover the truth.

Therefore, a backdoor was built into the system of every YoRHa member. When the time was right, this backdoor would be breached by the Machine Lifeforms' network. Once the Bunker was destroyed, all records of the YoRHa Project would vanish, and the humans on the Moon would 'exist' forever.

As the supervisor and executor of the YoRHa Project, the Commander was the only one fully aware of the plan's existence.

She knew that the YoRHa Unit would eventually be wiped out, including herself, but for the sake of all Androids, she did not fear sacrifice.

However, during the previous contact with 2B, the pod told her there was still a human on Earth (even if it was only one). The moment she heard this, she nearly broke down.

Fortunately, her long tenure in a high-ranking position had given her more than just emotional suppression; it had given her the facial control to remain unmoved even if a mountain collapsed before her.

Suppressing the surging emotions in her chest, the Commander jogged back to her room. Only now did she manage to calm down slightly.

Recalling her original resolve, the Commander's rationality slowly returned. But then she thought of the time spent working with all the YoRHa personnel and the members who trusted her implicitly, and her emotions once again overwhelmed her logic.

After a struggle between reason and emotion, the Commander took a deep breath. She chose emotion—both as a form of self-atonement and for the sake of everyone in the YoRHa Unit.

Since humanity had returned, the YoRHa Project no longer needed to continue. No one could judge what was right or wrong—no, let the human judge right from wrong. She only needed to issue the orders she believed were most correct.

With this thought, the Commander chose to cast aside her identity as a member of the 'Human Army' command and step forward as the Supreme Commander of YoRHa.

She returned to the communication hall and issued a new order in her capacity as the Supreme Commander of YoRHa.

"Issue my command: Assemble all personnel for a system self-check and update. Install the Chinese language plugin across the board. From this moment on, Chinese will be the official language for all personnel of our YoRHa Unit!"

Actually, the real YoRHa Project is much more complex than what I've written. This is a simplified version summarized from game text, so it's not far off from the original YoRHa Project.
