Chapter 75 - Chapter 75 — The Observer

Darkness swallowed the room.

Not the darkness of night.

Not the darkness of a power outage.

This darkness felt… aware.

Kenji couldn't see his own hand.

He couldn't see the hospital bed.

He couldn't even hear the monitors anymore.

The silence itself had become oppressive.

Then—

A click.

A single overhead light flickered to life.

Not above him.

Above the observation room.

The silhouette was still there.

Sitting perfectly straight behind the thick glass.

Waiting.

Watching.

Kenji stepped closer.

The figure didn't move.

His reflection appeared in the glass.

He looked exhausted. His clothes were soaked from the rain, and dark circles had settled beneath his eyes.

Then…

His reflection blinked.

Kenji hadn't.

His heart lurched.

The reflection slowly turned its head toward the seated silhouette.

Almost as if it knew the observer personally.

Kenji stepped back.

His reflection remained where it was for one impossible second before following him again.

"What… are you?"

The words escaped before he realized he'd spoken them.

The silhouette finally responded.

It stood.

Slowly.

Methodically.

Not with menace…

With familiarity.

As though it had stood up thousands of times before.

The room trembled.

A speaker somewhere inside the wall crackled with static.

Then a calm voice emerged.

"Observation Log."

Static.

"Cycle… incomplete."

Another burst of static.

"Subject has reached Record One."

Kenji's brow furrowed.

Record One.

The photograph.

The room.

The journal.

None of this was random.

Someone had divided his life into records.

"Identity confirmation…"

The voice paused.

Almost as though it were thinking.

Then…

"Pending."

Kenji's jaw tightened.

"I'm standing right here!"

His voice echoed through both rooms.

"Who are you?"

The speaker remained silent.

Then a drawer beneath the observation window slid open.

Inside rested a thin leather notebook.

Nothing else.

Kenji hesitated.

Every instinct screamed that picking it up was another trap.

He reached for it anyway.

The cover bore no title.

Only an embossed symbol.

A hooked crescent enclosed within a broken circle.

The same symbol that had followed him since the beginning.

He opened the notebook.

The first page contained only one sentence.

An observer must never interfere.

He turned the page.

Another sentence.

The first observer broke that law.

Another page.

The second observer disappeared.

Another.

The third observer chose compassion.

Another.

The fourth observer was executed.

Kenji stopped turning pages.

There were hundreds left.

Every page described another observer.

Not names.

Fates.

He skipped ahead.

Near the end.

One page had never been finished.

Only half a sentence had been written.

The Seventh Observer entrusted everything to…

The ink ended there.

No name.

No conclusion.

As though the writer had been interrupted.

Kenji closed the notebook.

His thoughts raced.

Seven observers.

Seven records.

Seven…

His eyes widened.

The number again.

Seven.

It kept appearing.

Seven minutes.

Seven records.

Seven observers.

Seven…

A sharp crack echoed behind him.

The observation glass.

A thin fracture spread across its surface.

The silhouette hadn't moved.

Yet another crack appeared.

Then another.

The glass wasn't breaking from force.

It was breaking from age.

No…

From pressure.

Something on the other side was pushing against it.

Very gently.

A pale hand pressed against the glass.

Not the silhouette's.

Something behind it.

Another hand appeared.

Then another.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

Their palms flattened silently against the window.

None of them struck it.

None of them screamed.

They simply waited.

Watching.

Kenji felt his chest tighten.

The silhouette lowered its head.

For the first time…

It acknowledged the hands behind it.

Then it looked back at Kenji.

Very slowly…

It raised both hands.

Not in surrender.

Not in greeting.

In warning.

Don't come closer.

The glass groaned.

A single piece fell away.

Not outward.

Inward.

Into the observation room.

Cold air rushed through the opening.

It carried a faint smell.

Rain.

Fresh rain.

Impossible.

There had been no windows.

No connection to the outside.

Yet the scent was unmistakable.

Rain.

And something else.

Smoke.

Burning wood.

Burning flesh.

Fragments flashed across Kenji's mind.

A church bell.

People running.

Someone shouting—

"Seal the gates!"

Another voice—

"He's still inside!"

A child crying.

Then…

Silence.

The vision vanished.

Kenji stumbled to one knee.

His breathing became ragged.

The notebook had fallen open beside him.

Words were appearing across the last blank page.

Not one letter at a time.

Entire sentences.

As if an invisible hand were writing faster than humanly possible.

Observation Log

Subject has begun remembering events that never happened.

Correction…

Events that happened to someone else.

The writing stopped.

One final line appeared.

Slower than the rest.

Almost reluctant.

He is approaching the wrong truth.

Before Kenji could read it again—

The page burst into white ash.

The notebook crumbled in his hands.

Across the room…

The silhouette was gone.

Only the chair remained.

Still facing him.

Empty.

Behind the shattered glass…

The hundreds of pale hands had disappeared.

All except one.

One hand remained pressed against the darkness.

Its index finger slowly traced four words across the fogged glass.

DON'T TRUST YOUR MEMORIES.

The hand vanished.

The glass became clear again.

And for the first time since entering the White Room…

Kenji realized something that made his blood run cold.

He couldn't remember how he had gotten there.

Not the staircase.

Not the hidden door.

Not even opening the White Room.

It was simply…

Missing.
