Chapter 35 - The Trio

Date: May 5, 2026 (Tuesday)

Time: 7:29 AM

Location: The Intersection

-

The morning sun was hitting the pavement at a sharp angle, creating a glare that made Albert squint. He adjusted his backpack and walked the familiar route to the 'intersection' where the three of them always met.

Standard protocol dictated that Albert arrived first (7:30 AM), followed by Leo (7:31 to 7:36 AM), and finally Maya (7:32 to 7:42 AM). It was a routine established over three years of middle school.

But today, the variables had shifted.

As Albert turned the corner, he stopped.

They were already there.

Leo was leaning against the guardrail, checking his watch. Maya was standing on the curb, bouncing slightly on her heels, scanning the street. When she saw Albert, her face lit up with a relief that seemed disproportionate for a Tuesday morning.

"Albert!" she waved enthusiastically.

"You're late!" Leo called out, grinning.

Albert checked his watch. 7:29:45.

"I am on time," Albert said, walking up to them. "You guys are early. Why?"

"Just felt like it!" Maya chirped as she stepped immediately to his left side.

"Yeah," Leo moved to his right. "We figured we'd get a head start. Beat the rush at the gate."

They slotted into formation instantly. Albert in the center. Leo and Maya flanking him like a royal guard escorting a VIP. It was tight. Too tight.

Overcompensation. Yesterday, the group dynamic fractured. I tried to leave, and Maya faked an illness to keep me. Now, they are reinforcing the structure. They arrived early to ensure I couldn't slip past them. They are physically boxing me in to prevent another 'escape attempt.' It's not friendship; it's containment.

"Did you sleep well?" Maya asked, her shoulder brushing his arm.

"Adequately," Albert said.

"Good! Because today is going to be a great day!" she declared.

They walked toward the school. They talked about TV shows, weather, and everything except the awkward silence that had nearly swallowed them yesterday. They were plastering over the cracks with aggressive cheerfulness.

Albert walked in the middle, feeling the weight of their effort.

This is unsustainable. We are trapped in a feedback loop. I try to pull away -> They pull harder -> I feel guilty -> I stay -> I suffer -> I try to pull

away. The cycle will continue until the heat death of the universe. Or until I do something drastic enough to shatter the loop permanently.

 ---

Time: 10:35 AM | Location: Class 1-4

The chime for the third period rang, but the door didn't slide open. The teacher, usually punctual, was missing.

The class murmured, settling into the comfortable buzz of unsupervised teenagers.

"Free period?" Leo asked, stretching his arms.

"Looks like it," Maya said. She grabbed her water bottle. "I'm going to the vending machine. This room is dry."

"I'll come. I need to wash my face," Leo stood up.

They looked at Albert.

"Coming, Albert?"

"No," Albert said, opening a reference book. "I need to review the syntax for the next chapter."

"Okay! Be right back!" Maya smiled.

They left.

The classroom was noisy, but Albert sat in his bubble of silence. He wasn't reading the syntax. He was staring at a blank page, running a high-stakes simulation in his mind.

---

Objective: Dissolve the 'Trio' without causing long-term psychological damage to Leo or Maya."

Current Strategy: Gradual withdrawal.

Result: Failure. Subject 'Maya' exhibits high resistance to separation.

New Strategy Required: The Nuclear Option.

---

He spun his pen.

If he couldn't leave them, he had to make them leave him. He needed a reason so catastrophic, so awkward, that the friendship could not survive it.

A valid reason.

"Rejection," Albert whispered. He began to construct the scenario.

---

Simulation 1: The Suicide Confession

Time: 17:35 (After school)

Location: The Rooftop (Sunset)

Albert calls Maya to the roof while Leo is in his club.

Albert: "Maya. I need to tell you

something."

Maya: "What is it, Albert? You look serious."

Albert (Acting): "I've liked you for a long time. Please go out with me."

Silence.

The wind blows. The sunset turns the sky blood red.

Maya's eyes widened. She looks at Albert. Then she looks down. She thinks of Leo. She thinks of the chemistry they have.

Maya (Crying): "I'm sorry, Albert... I... I can't. I only see you as a friend. My heart belongs to..."

Albert: "I understand. Thank you for listening."

End Simulation.

-

Outcome Analysis: This is the perfect checkmate.

1. The Rejection: Maya rejects me.

2. The Aftermath: The awkwardness becomes a physical wall. A girl cannot hang out with a guy she just dumped. It violates social physics.

3. The Break: I have a valid, socially acceptable excuse to leave. 'I need time to heal.'

4. The Result: I vanish. Leo comforts a crying Maya. The barrier

(Me) is removed. Emotional vulnerability leads to intimacy. They date.

It is a sacrificial play. I destroy my own standing to force their

union. It will hurt like hell. I will lose my best friends. But they will gain each other.

---

Albert's hand trembled. It was brutal. It was a villain's move, manipulating their feelings like that. But it was efficient. It was the only way out.

"I'll do it," Albert thought. "Today. 5:35 PM."

He started to plan the speech. But then, a variable flickered in his mind.

A risk factor he hadn't accounted for.

"Wait," Albert thought. "This is Maya."

He ran the simulation again, adding the "Maya Factor"—her pathological kindness.

---

Simulation 2: The "Worst Case" Scenario

Albert: "I've liked you for a long time. Please go out with me."

Maya freezes. She doesn't look at Leo. She looks at Albert. She remembers him counting the seconds in the thunderstorm. She remembers him walking her home.

She sees his desperation. She calculates the alternative: If she says no, the Trio breaks. Albert leaves. She loses him.

Maya (Terrified of change): "Okay."

Albert: "...What?"

Maya (Forcing a smile): "Okay, Albert. Let's... let's try."

End of Simulation.

---

Albert slammed his pen down on the desk. Clack.

Catastrophic Failure. The probability is low, maybe less than 5%, but it exists. If Maya says 'Yes' out of pity... If she says 'Yes' just to save the group... I enter Hell.

I would be trapped in a relationship with a girl who loves my best friend. I would be holding her hostage with her own kindness. Leo would step back to be a 'good guy.' The torture would last for months. I can't risk that.

I can't risk her saying yes.

He slumped in his chair.

"Scrapped," he muttered. "The risk of a False Positive is too high."

Back to square one. He was pathetic. He couldn't even orchestrate his own rejection properly.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over his desk.

Albert looked up, startled.

It was Yamada, a boy from the middle row. It was his birthday today; Albert had heard about it days ago. Yamada was walking down the aisle, smiling, holding a notepad.

He was walking straight toward Albert's desk.

Yamada. He's organizing something. He's looking this way. Is he... inviting me? We spoke once. I lent him an eraser. Is that enough?

Albert felt a tiny spark of hope. A lifeline.

If I get invited to a birthday party—even a pity invite—I can use that. 'Sorry Leo, Maya, I have plans with Yamada.' It's a wedge. It's a start to a life outside the Trio.

Albert straightened his posture and prepared a casual, "Oh, sure, I'm free."

Yamada came closer. He was two steps away.

One step.

Then, without breaking stride, Yamada walked right past Albert's desk.

"Hey, Genta!" Yamada grinned as he clapped Genta's shoulder. "Karaoke tonight. You in?"

"Karaoke?" Genta looked up. "I don't know, man. I'm broke."

"My treat! It's my birthday," Yamada insisted. "Everyone's coming. Hasegawa, Satou, even the guys from Class 3."

Albert sat frozen.

He stared at his notebook.

He could hear Yamada's voice just inches from his ear.

"Everyone's coming."

Everyone except the boy sitting in the back corner.

Analysis: Propinquity Effect failure. I am physically closer to Yamada than Genta is. But socially, I am invisible. He didn't ignore me out of malice. His lack of attention wasn't a choice or a snub. He simply didn't register my existence at all. To him, I am part of the desk—the background texture.

The reality crashed down on him, heavier than any simulation.

He hadn't made a single friend in a month. While he was busy stressing about Leo and Maya, playing the tragic hero, the rest of the class had moved on.

They had formed bonds. They had inside jokes. They had karaoke nights.

And Albert had nothing.

"I'm pathetic," Albert whispered to the empty page.

I'm sitting here plotting elaborate schemes to break up with my only two friends. Meanwhile, the world has already decided I'm alone. If Leo and Maya left me today... I wouldn't be a lone wolf. I would just be alone.

"We're back!"

The door slid open.

Leo and Maya burst in, bringing the sunlight with them.

"The vending machine was out of peach tea, so we went to the cafeteria," Leo announced, dropping a bottle of cold green tea on Albert's desk. "Here. Brain fuel."

"And I got cookies!" Maya cheered as she placed a small bag next to the tea.

They sat down on either side of Albert, instantly enclosing him in their warmth.

"Did we miss anything?" Maya asked, smiling at him.

Albert looked at the tea and cookies. Then he looked at Yamada, who was walking out the back door with his arm around Genta, laughing.

"No," Albert said, his voice hollow. "You didn't miss anything. Just... quiet."

Maya opened her bag and picked a bag of cookies, "I baked cookies. We should eat this later,"

Before Albert could answer, the door slid open again. The teacher finally rushed in, apologizing for the delay.

"Take your seats!"

Leo and Maya turned to the front. Albert stared at the back of their heads. They were the only things keeping him tethered to reality, and he was trying to cut the rope.

I'm sorry, Albert thought. I'm so sorry that I'm all you have to deal with.
