Chapter 14 - The demon who didn't kill her

The word demon did not belong in Aria's living room.

It sounded absurd there—wedged between the faded floral couch she had bought secondhand, the tiny coffee table that wobbled if someone breathed too hard near it, and the stack of paperwork she had forgotten to take to work that morning.

Demons belonged in horror movies. In old myths whispered by grandmothers trying to scare children into behaving. In fantasy novels where brooding men with impossible cheekbones turned out to have wings and tragic backstories.

They did not belong standing calmly in the middle of her apartment wearing a perfectly tailored black suit that probably cost more than her yearly rent.

Yet here Kael Draven was.

And here Aria was.

Frozen.

"What…?" she said faintly, the single word falling out of her mouth before she could stop it.

Her brain had decided to stop cooperating with reality.

Kael leaned slightly against the wall near the window, arms folded loosely across his chest. He looked completely relaxed. Completely composed.

Like he hadn't just shattered her understanding of the world.

"Did you hear me incorrectly?" he asked quietly.

Aria blinked.

Her hands slowly moved to her hips as if her body had decided panic was less useful than anger.

"Did I hear you incorrectly?" she repeated.

"Yes."

"You said you're a demon."

"I did."

She stared at him.

He stared back.

Seconds passed.

Then Aria laughed.

Not a cute laugh.

Not a polite laugh.

It was the kind of laugh someone made when they were five seconds away from losing their mind.

"Okay," she said, nodding quickly. "Right. Of course. A demon. Obviously."

Kael didn't move.

"Perfectly normal explanation," she continued, pacing now. "My boss shows up at my apartment, casually breaks into my home, tells me demons are real and he is one, and I'm just supposed to—what? Offer you tea?"

"Tea would be acceptable," Kael replied calmly.

She stopped pacing.

Her eyes widened.

"You are not helping your case."

"I'm not attempting to help my case."

"Oh that's comforting."

Aria ran both hands through her hair, turning away from him as she tried to force logic back into her brain.

This was ridiculous.

Ridiculous.

There had to be a rational explanation.

Maybe he was testing her.

Yes.

That had to be it.

CEOs did weird things sometimes. Rich people had strange hobbies. Maybe this was some psychological test.

She spun around suddenly.

"Are you filming me?"

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"Filming you."

"Yes."

"For what purpose?"

"I don't know! Some rich-people reality show? 'Watch The Poor Assistant Lose Her Mind'? I don't know what billionaires do for entertainment!"

A pause.

Then—

"I'm not filming you."

Aria narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

Her gaze scanned the room like she expected cameras to pop out of her lamps.

When she didn't find any, she looked back at him slowly.

"…You're serious."

"Yes."

Silence stretched again.

Her throat felt dry.

"Okay," she said carefully, folding her arms. "Let's say—hypothetically—you are a demon."

"I am."

"Hypothetically," she insisted.

Kael inclined his head slightly.

"Then explain something to me."

"What would you like explained?"

"Everything."

"That is a broad request."

Aria pointed at him.

"You told me you're a demon, Kael. I think broad requests are justified."

He watched her quietly.

Then he sighed.

The sound was subtle, but something about it felt ancient. Tired.

"Very well."

He pushed himself away from the wall and walked slowly toward her.

Aria immediately stepped back.

"Stop."

He stopped.

"Good," she said quickly. "Stay there."

Kael's lips twitched slightly.

"Are you afraid?"

"Yes!"

"At least you're honest."

"Of course I'm afraid!" she burst out. "The last time I saw glowing red eyes someone disintegrated into smoke!"

"That was unfortunate," he said.

"UNFORTUNATE?!"

She stared at him like she was considering throwing something.

Kael studied her expression thoughtfully.

"I didn't intend for you to witness that."

"Yet somehow I did!"

"Yes."

"And now you're in my apartment telling me you're a demon!"

"Yes."

Aria rubbed her face with both hands.

"I should have taken that job at the bakery," she muttered.

Kael tilted his head.

"You applied for a bakery position?"

"Yes!"

"You would not have enjoyed it."

"How do you know that?"

"You burn toast."

Her head snapped up.

"How do you know that?"

Kael didn't answer.

Aria stared at him in horror.

"…Have you been watching me?"

"No."

"Then how do you know I burn toast?!"

"You burned toast three mornings ago while preparing breakfast."

She went completely still.

"How—"

"You also attempted to scrape the burnt section off with a knife and cut your finger."

Her mouth opened.

Closed.

Opened again.

"How do you know that?!" she demanded.

Kael said nothing.

Instead, his grey eyes flickered again.

Just for a second.

Red.

Aria stumbled backward until the couch hit the back of her knees and she dropped onto it.

"Oh my God."

She stared up at him.

"You're serious."

"Yes."

"You're actually serious."

"Yes."

"This is not a prank."

"No."

"This is not a psychological experiment."

"No."

"This is not rich-people entertainment."

"No."

Her voice became smaller.

"…You're actually a demon."

"Yes."

Silence flooded the room.

Aria looked down at her hands.

They were shaking.

She clenched them together tightly, trying to stop it.

Her mind was racing.

Pieces started sliding together whether she wanted them to or not.

The alley.

The man dissolving into ash.

Those glowing eyes.

Lucien's red gaze.

The strange party.

The way people treated Kael like something more than a CEO.

Her stomach twisted.

"…Demons are real," she whispered.

"Yes."

"And your brother…"

"Lucien."

"…He's a demon too."

"Yes."

"And the people at that party…"

"Some were human."

Some.

Aria swallowed.

"…And some weren't."

"No."

Her laugh came out weak.

"Great."

Kael watched her carefully.

"You're handling this better than most."

She slowly lifted her head.

"Most?"

"Yes."

"How many people have you told you're a demon?!"

"Very few."

"And I'm one of them?!"

"Yes."

"WHY?!"

The question exploded out of her.

Kael was quiet for a moment.

Then he said something that made her heart skip.

"Because you already saw."

The alley.

The red eyes.

The death.

Aria hugged her arms around herself.

"That doesn't mean you had to come to my apartment and confirm it!"

"I did."

"Why?!"

Kael studied her.

His voice dropped slightly.

"Because you're involved now."

Her stomach dropped.

"Involved?"

"Yes."

"With what?!"

"With me."

The words landed heavily between them.

Aria blinked.

"…I don't like how that sounds."

"You don't have to."

"Good."

Kael stepped closer again.

This time she didn't tell him to stop.

Mostly because she was too busy panicking internally.

He stopped a few feet away, towering over her even while she sat on the couch.

His presence filled the room.

Aria noticed something strange then.

Despite the terror.

Despite the absurdity.

Despite the fact that he had just confessed to being a literal demon…

He still looked painfully handsome.

Which was frankly unfair.

Her brain was having trouble reconciling ancient supernatural monster with CEO who looked like he belonged on magazine covers.

"You're staring," Kael said.

"I'm processing," she replied quickly.

"You're staring."

"You're a demon!"

"That doesn't explain the staring."

She pointed accusingly at his face.

"You're suspiciously attractive for a demon!"

Kael blinked.

"…Suspiciously."

"Yes!"

"I'll keep that in mind."

She groaned.

"This is ridiculous."

"Yes."

"You're too calm about this."

"I've had centuries to adjust."

Her head snapped up.

"…Centuries?"

"Yes."

"You're old."

"Very."

"Like… ancient old?"

"Yes."

Aria stared at him again.

"You don't look ancient."

"Thank you."

"That wasn't a compliment."

He smirked faintly.

Her brain short-circuited slightly.

Oh no.

He was smirking now.

That should be illegal.

She looked away quickly.

"Stop doing that."

"Doing what?"

"Looking… smug."

"I'm not smug."

"You're very smug."

"I'm not."

"You're a smug demon."

"That's not a recognized classification."

Aria groaned again and leaned back into the couch.

"This is my life now," she muttered.

"Yes."

She pointed at him again.

"You're the worst thing that has ever happened to my stress levels."

"Debatable."

"Not debatable!"

Kael studied her for a long moment.

Then something changed in his expression.

Subtle.

But real.

"Aria."

Her heart skipped again.

"…What?"

"You're safe."

She blinked.

"What?"

"You're safe," he repeated.

Her brow furrowed.

"That's… not very reassuring coming from a demon."

"I won't harm you."

"That's exactly what a demon would say."

He tilted his head slightly.

"Perhaps."

Aria looked at him carefully.

Then she said quietly—

"Why didn't you kill me?"

Silence filled the room again.

"You could have," she continued softly. "In the alley. When I saw you."

"Yes."

"But you didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

Kael's grey eyes darkened slightly.

Then he said something that made her heart do something strange.

"Because you're mine."

Aria blinked.

"…Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

Her face turned bright red.

"I definitely heard you but I'm choosing to believe I misunderstood!"

"You didn't."

"That sounded very possessive!"

"It was."

Her brain short-circuited again.

"You cannot just claim people like property!"

"Watch me."

"NO!"

Kael's lips curved faintly.

"You're interesting when you're angry."

"I'm angry all the time around you!"

"Yes."

"That's not a compliment!"

"I didn't say it was."

Aria stared at him.

Then slowly…

Very slowly…

She realized something terrifying.

Despite everything.

Despite the fear.

Despite the insanity.

Despite the fact that her boss had just revealed himself to be a literal demon…

A tiny traitorous part of her brain was starting to understand something.

Kael Draven might be a monster.

But he had never once looked at her like prey.

And that…

That might be the most dangerous thing of all.

Because monsters were easier to hate.

But Kael—

Kael looked at her like she belonged to him.

And for some reason…

That scared her even more.
