Chapter 33 - The City Where It All Began (Part 1)

The morning sky was still veiled by a thin layer of mist as Lucas departed from the refugee camp. The campfires that had kept everyone warm the previous night had faded into glowing embers, while most of the refugees had already returned to their modest routines. Some prepared breakfast over open flames, others repaired broken wagon wheels, and a few simply sat in silence, staring at the road ahead as though they still could not believe they had truly abandoned the place they once called home.

Lucas adjusted the strap of his bag across his shoulder.

His journey was far from over.

If anything, it had only just begun.

The name Sanctuary had remained in his thoughts ever since Ardan spoke it the night before. Throughout his life, Lucas had always chased someone. He had hunted criminals through the alleys of Bouten. He had pursued the people responsible for taking his sister away. He had devoted years to tracking those who preyed upon the weak. Even now, he found himself pursuing Samir.

But Sanctuary was different.

For the first time, he was no longer chasing a person.

He was chasing an answer.

The old map Ardan had given him rested in his hands. The parchment had yellowed with age, its corners worn and fragile. The route leading toward Sanctuary had been drawn in faded black ink, barely visible beneath the countless folds of the paper, yet still clear enough to follow.

Lucas studied every line carefully.

Then his brow slowly furrowed.

Among the many routes, one stood out as the shortest.

But it passed through a city.

A city whose name he had never expected to see again.

Bouten.

Lucas stopped walking.

The morning breeze brushed against the edge of his cloak as his eyes remained fixed upon the name.

Years had passed since he had last left that city behind.

How ironic.

Out of all the roads stretching across the world, fate had chosen to guide him back to the place where everything had begun.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

Not one of happiness.

But the quiet smile of someone realizing how strangely destiny weaves its paths.

The road leading toward Bouten had barely changed.

The hills surrounding it were still covered in wild grass. The narrow river winding through the valley continued to flow peacefully, just as he remembered. Even the ancient trees lining the roadside stood exactly where they always had, as though time itself had forgotten this corner of the world.

Lucas walked without rushing.

Each step awakened memories long buried beneath years of hardship.

Once, this road had seemed endless.

Back then, he had been nothing more than a young boy walking beside his father toward the marketplace every weekend. He could still remember how his father always bought fresh bread from the small bakery near the city gate, while Gabriel would run ahead impatiently, unable to wait even a few moments before taking the first bite.

Lucas lowered his gaze.

He had almost forgotten there had once been a time when life had been that simple.

Before Bouten changed.

Before he changed.

The journey allowed his thoughts to wander.

Once, Lucas's entire world had been no larger than Bouten.

Everything began there.

Everything ended there.

He knew every narrow alley, every rooftop, every corner of the marketplace, and every dark passage where criminals hid from the law. As a young man, he had truly believed that Bouten stood at the center of every problem in the world.

As long as crime continued to plague that city, the world itself could never become a place worth living in.

That belief was why he fought.

Not for fame.

Not for wealth.

But because of one simple conviction.

If he could stop one criminal today...

Perhaps one family would make it home safely tonight.

Back then, life seemed that simple.

Now, after witnessing Velmora and hearing Eldoria's story, Lucas realized how painfully narrow his understanding had once been.

He had believed that evil always wore a face.

A murderer.

A smuggler.

A thief.

A corrupt official.

Find them.

Stop them.

That was all there was to it.

Now he knew better.

Samir murdered no one.

He stole nothing.

He sought no throne.

He never demanded loyalty or worship.

And yet what he left behind was more terrifying than every criminal Lucas had ever hunted.

For the first time in his life, Lucas had encountered someone who genuinely believed he was saving the world.

And there was no more dangerous enemy than one who believed he was right.

By late afternoon, the silhouette of Bouten finally appeared on the horizon.

Its stone walls still stood proudly against the fading sunlight. Watchtowers rose from each corner of the fortifications, while the city's banners swayed gently in the wind.

Lucas stopped atop a small hill overlooking the valley.

From there, nearly the entire city lay before him.

Silence settled around him.

For a long while, he simply stared.

Then, almost without realizing it, a quiet smile crossed his lips.

"So..."

"...it's this small."

The words escaped naturally.

Once upon a time, Bouten had felt enormous.

Its streets had seemed endless.

Its government buildings had looked imposing.

Its guard headquarters had felt untouchable.

Back then, Lucas had truly believed there was no place in the world larger than this city.

Now everything looked different.

Not because Bouten had changed.

Because he had.

After seeing the world beyond its walls, Bouten was nothing more than a small city that had happened to become his home.

Yet strangely enough...

it was that very city that had shaped the man he had become.

The city gate looked exactly as he remembered.

Two guards stood watch on either side, inspecting merchants and travelers entering with carts full of goods. Wagon wheels rattled across the stone road while vendors shouted from nearby stalls, eager to attract the day's first customers.

Lucas walked through the gate.

No one recognized him.

He preferred it that way.

He wandered slowly along the main street.

The bakery his father used to visit still stood where it always had.

Its owner had changed.

But the scent of freshly baked bread remained exactly the same.

Lucas stopped for a moment.

Almost unconsciously, he took a slow breath.

The familiar aroma awakened memories he thought had long disappeared.

Gabriel laughing as she struggled to carry a loaf far too large for her tiny hands.

His mother pretending to scold them for eating before dinner.

His father smiling quietly as he watched the two children argue over who deserved the bigger piece.

Lucas slowly closed his eyes.

The memories returned with remarkable clarity.

And for the first time in years...

They did not hurt.

They simply made him miss them.

He continued walking toward the neighborhood where he had once lived.

Many of the old wooden houses had been renovated. The narrow alleys looked cleaner than before. Children chased one another through the streets without fear.

Lucas watched them for a long while.

Once, he had been just like them.

Running through those same streets without a single worry.

Never imagining that an entire life could change in a single night.

A quiet smile appeared on his face.

"How foolish I was..."

There had been a time when he believed he could protect everyone.

He had convinced himself that if he became strong enough, no child would ever lose their family again.

Now he understood.

Strength alone was never enough.

Because the world was not filled only with evil people.

It was also filled with people who sincerely believed they were doing the right thing.

And those were the hardest people to fight.

Lucas resumed walking.

The sun slowly disappeared behind the rooftops of Bouten, stretching long shadows across the stone streets.

In the distance, a narrow alley came into view.

The one place he had never truly forgotten.

Lucas stopped.

His breathing grew slightly heavier.

He knew exactly what waited at the end of that alley.

The place where his entire life had changed.

The place where the journey that had led him here...

had truly begun.
