Chapter 2 - Hunting

The being continued to float for a long while, it did not know where it was going but it did know one thing: trying to get close to those creatures it saw before caused pain, so avoiding them was the best option.

With this as the only thought, the being continued to float in the opposite direction to the one it had seen the humans go in. The barely lit hallways of the dungeon were repetitive and hard to know where you had come from and where you were trying to go, even more so for a being with no knowledge of what a dungeon or a maze was and without a destination in mind.

Suddenly, it felt something different. Not the same as the rats it had seen before, not a being with the sense of kinship it had felt from the rats. It was an uneasy feeling. It must have been something left over from the rat: the fear of being hunted.

For the being who did not understand this sensation, it came to a standstill in the middle of the hallway it had been floating down. It looked in the shadows of the hallway, searching for what was causing this new feeling of unease that was taking over its mind.

It found the source of the feeling, a larger creature that was blending into the shadows almost perfectly. It was curled into a small ball, it's head resting on top of it's tail like it was still watching, despite its eyes being shut. This was a dungeon-born dark wolf, but the being would not know this.

It approached the wolf, wondering why the feeling was getting more intense. The feeling grew and told the being that it should get away but it ignored these feelings that it was having, pushing them to the back of its non-existent mind as it floated closer and closer, until it's form was overlapping with the wolf.

Then, the same feeling of being "pulled" like what had happened with the rat and the human happened. The being felt a small fear of the pain returning, but this was instantly forgotten as it opened its new eyes.

The world was brighter than before.

The world felt more full than before.

Scents that it did not know how to comprehend flooded its nose, feeling like it wanted to withdraw and hide away again, oblivious to these overwhelming things that filled the world around it.

It tried its best to withstand the intense smells and adjust to it again, shutting its eyes as it tried to focus on one feeling at a time.

A few minutes passed, and the being was able to open its eyes again. It observed its surroundings, and tried to float across the floor.

Instead of doing so, it fell face first into the floor in front of it.

The feeling of having legs was new, and something that had to be adjusted to. Putting one foot out, it placed a small amount of the weight that it now had into it, and the leg bent inwards. It stood again, tried again but this time putting less weight into it than it had done before.

This time, it succeeded in placing a single leg out in front of the rest.

It followed this up with the next front foot, succeeding in a single try this time.

Trying to stand up entirely was the next challenge, unbending the hind legs and stretching them out to the same length as the front legs, placing an equal amount of weight on each leg. It tried this but then noticed it was unbalanced whilst doing this, it tried placing more weight into its back legs than the front and it instantly balanced.

With standing mastered, it now had to learn how to walk. Trying not to fall, it placed one foot out in front, allowing the others to take over the weight that was placed in it before it was lifted from the ground. It then placed the foot down again, this time further away than it was before. It then tried to move on to moving its other legs to match the now outstretched front leg.

The process of learning was slow and repetitive, but the being could finally walk after less than an hour of attempts. It was a being that learnt quickly.

The creature that it had taken over this time had stronger instincts than the - barely alive - rat had. They were telling it to hunt. But the being did not understand, instead of trying to understand what the feeling itself was, it simply allowed the natural actions of the wolf to take back over. It was now an observer, still with power over the body, but deciding to let the instincts guide the body rather than its own will.

The wolf sprinted directly down the hallway, in the same way that the being had come from before. It's nose was low to the ground, and despite the being not being the one in control, it could still feel the overwhelming smells surrounding it.

The wolf began to stalk, slowing its steps and lowering its body to the floor. The being was worried about the careful balance that it had learnt about, but allowed the instincts to continue to control the body. To the surprise of the being, it did not fall and the wolfs footsteps that had been making gentle tapping noises against the stone floor as it had been running faded even more.

The wolf had its front shoulders higher than the head was, everything lowered except for the ears which pointed upwards and swivelled around towards every quiet noise.

Then, it leapt out towards a small dungeon rat. It opened its jaw wide and then snapped it shut with a crunch that echoed around the dungeon's empty hallways. There were a few muffled squeaks before the taste of blood began to fill the beings mouth, taste was something that it had never known before but the taste of this meat was something that it didn't want to let go of. It wrestled control back from the instincts that were telling it to swallow the rat whole, and began to slowly chew on the rat, listening to the rhythmic snaps that resounded with each bite. It continued this until the rat was no more than a mush with a few small bones remaining. Before relenting and giving up the taste it had loved. The tail that had been rapidly swaying came to a stop behind it, lowering back towards the ground.

The being had not felt this part until now, but the feeling of it stopping alerted it to its presence.

The wolf was now satisfied, the being began to feel the body slow and become even heavier than before. It was trying to move the body forward, but the instincts were telling it to stop and go back to the still state it had been in when it had been taken over.

The wolf's instincts were telling it to find a dark corner, so the being attempted to do so. It struggled to know where was dark enough, after searching it found a spot that seemed to be dark and silent enough. After settling down the being fell into the first sleep of its life.
