The storm outside continued to rage, the deafening thunder making it feel as if the heavens had deliberately severed this night from the rest of the world. Yet, inside the top-floor penthouse, a suffocating silence stretched across the entire penthouse. It wasn't a peaceful silence. It was thick with blistering tension waiting to detonate.
Ren stood leaning against the massive glass window, his sharp eyes piercing through the curtain of rain to the street below. The crystal glass of fine whiskey had been abandoned on the table, and the ice had completely melted. The tall man raised his wrist, glaring at his watch almost every thirty seconds.
It's midnight. Didn't he say he was on his way?
Anxiety and anticipation twisted tightly in his gut. Ren reached up, roughly undoing the top two buttons of his black shirt to vent the rising, suffocating heat in his body, triggered entirely by the memory of the last text message.
'Don't lock the penthouse door tonight.'
