He regained consciousness to warmth.
Not the warmth of sunlight or fire , a warmth that moved, that had direction and intention, threading through him the way water found its level in cracked stone. It started in his chest and spread outward, following the paths of his meridians, and where it moved, something changed.
Wei Tianlong opened his eyes.
The Azure Dragon's enormous head was three feet from his face. In the time he had been unconscious, it had worked its way partially free of the suppression chains , not fully, the runes still held at the heaviest anchor points , but far enough that its chest was pressed against his, and the azure light he had mistaken for warmth was moving from the dragon into him in slow, rhythmic pulses.
He understood what he was seeing. He understood it clearly and immediately, and the understanding settled in his chest alongside the warmth with a weight that had nothing to do with cultivation.
The extraction ritual had been stopped at forty percent completion. For a beast, that was worse than either outcome , worse than successful extraction, worse than never having been touched. The damage to the dragon's spiritual core was not the kind that healed. It was the kind that meant it had hours remaining, at most, and it had chosen to spend those hours pouring what remained of its essence into the meridians of a Qi Condensation outer disciple who had stumbled into its clearing and made a very poor tactical decision.
Why?
The dragon's lightning-coloured eye was closer now. It held his gaze without apology, and the answer it offered needed no words.
Because you chose to stand. When there was no advantage in it, when every reasonable calculation pointed away from it, you stood anyway. That is worth more than survival.
The warmth became a flood.
Wei Tianlong's broken meridians did not simply repair , they shattered completely, every channel he had spent nine years painstakingly clearing cracking open like ice in spring, and what replaced them was something else entirely. Wider. Differently structured. His Fragmented Earth Root, the miserable, inadequate, one-fifth-speed spiritual foundation he had been born with, came apart like paper in water and something grew in the space it left , something that felt, impossibly, like it had been waiting there all along.
He lost consciousness again before it finished.
---
When he woke the second time, the dragon was gone.
In its place, lying on the disturbed ground where its chest had been, was a single scale. Deep blue-green. Warm to the touch. It hummed faintly against his palm when he picked it up, the way a bell hummed after the sound had technically stopped.
Wei Tianlong held it for a long moment. Then he tucked it into his inner robe, against his chest, and became aware that his ribs no longer hurt.
He sat up. His Qi reserves, which had been at forty percent before the fight, were at full capacity , no, past full capacity. The meridians that the dragon's essence had rewritten were wider than his original channels, and they were full to their new capacity, which was significantly larger than anything he had possessed before. He could feel his cultivation base as clearly as he could feel the ground under him, and it was , wrong was not the right word. Different. Entirely, fundamentally different.
A sound like a distant bell, felt more than heard, resonated once in the hollow of his chest.

Wei Tianlong read the information once, then a second time, then put it aside in the part of his mind reserved for things that required careful consideration when he was not currently in a dangerous forest with no food and limited time before the trial ended.
He stood up. He checked his Qi. He assessed his new meridian structure with the careful attention of someone who had spent nine years learning to be precise about his own limitations and was now finding that several of those limitations no longer applied.
Then he started walking.
---
He found the Crescent Moon Pavilion cultivators approximately forty minutes later, at the forest boundary. They had not expected him to be functional, let alone walking. The lead cultivator's expression, when he emerged from the trees, was briefly and genuinely interesting.
"The violation evidence," Wei Tianlong said, and held out his hand.
What followed was not, precisely, a fight. It was closer to a negotiation in which one party had already made a very persuasive argument and the other party was deciding how much it wanted to commit to the alternative. Wei Tianlong had two new layers of cultivation, a spiritual root that he did not yet fully understand, and the specific quality of calm that came from someone who had already decided they were not going to back down , which was, in most situations, significantly more unsettling than aggression.
The lead cultivator handed over his sect emblem, which would serve as physical evidence of the violation. The other two followed his lead, because they had seen what Wei Tianlong looked like when he was down to forty percent Qi with five cracked ribs, and none of them particularly wanted to find out what he looked like fully repaired and two cultivation layers higher.
Wei Tianlong pocketed the three emblems, turned, and walked the remaining distance to the sect boundary. He had perhaps an hour before sunrise. He crossed the line back into sect territory with forty-seven minutes to spare.
The System notification was quiet, almost gentle.

Wei Tianlong sat down on a rock outside the sect boundary, looked at the sky lightening in the east, and allowed himself to think about the dragon for the first time without the urgency of survival pressing at the edges of the thought.
It had chosen him. Not because he was powerful , he had been, by any objective measure, one of the least powerful cultivators in the entire Jade Serpent Sect. It had chosen him because he had stood up.
He pressed his hand flat against his chest, over the scale in his inner robe.
He did not make any promises aloud. He did not need to.
