Professor McGonagall was indeed feeling a bit overwhelmed. Considering she had to bring other Muggle-born students to Diagon Alley in the afternoon, she gladly accepted Harley's kindness.
Looking at the list in her hand, Harley took Hermione to Ollivanders Wand Shop first.
For young Wizards who hadn't started school yet, a wand was always what they wanted most.
On the way, Hermione expressed that she wanted to go to the bookstore first to buy textbooks. Harley refused without a second thought—no kidding, if Hermione entered a bookstore, she wouldn't be coming out for several hours.
To avoid delaying the rest of the itinerary, Harley silently moved the bookstore trip to the very end. That way, Hermione wouldn't be able to linger there even if she wanted to, unless she was willing to miss Harley's birthday party.
Ollivanders Wand Shop wasn't as flashy as the other storefronts in Diagon Alley. There was only a black sign with peeling gold letters at the entrance, and the purple cushions in the shop window were somewhat faded. The wands displayed on them also looked quite ordinary.
Although the shop was inconspicuous in Diagon Alley, it was a place almost every new Hogwarts student had to visit. After all, Ollivander was the only wandmaking master in Great Britain, making it entirely a seller's market.
Normally, even if Ollivander priced his wands at 50 Galleons each, other Wizards would have to grit their teeth and pay.
Fortunately, Ollivander was quite ethical; the wand prices weren't set high, and there was even a discount for a new student's first wand.
Entering the shop, thousands of boxes stacked tier upon tier on the shelves came into view, giving Harley an instant flashback to a delivery station from her past life.
"Good morning... oh?"
Ollivander appeared ghost-like at Harley's side, startling both Harley and Hermione. Neither of them had seen where he had come from.
"Hello."
"Good morning."
Hermione and Harley responded quickly.
Ollivander didn't reply but leaned down, his pale eyes staring unblinkingly at Harley.
"A child of the Snape Family... I've been thinking I would see you soon. You look so much like your mother—"
Saying this, Ollivander turned to look at Hermione. "A Muggle-born child? I have a premonition... you will become a very powerful Wizard in the future, one who will hold a certain amount of power in the wizarding world."
Harley raised an eyebrow. She hadn't expected Ollivander to have such potential as a mystic, seeing through to Hermione's essence at once—she was, after all, the future Minister for Magic.
Hermione didn't seem particularly pleased by the compliment but asked, "Thank you for the praise... then what kind of Wizard do you think Harley will become?"
Ollivander glanced at Harley meaningfully and said in an ethereal tone, "A child of the Snape Family doesn't need my premonitions—her mission was destined from the moment she arrived in Great Britain."
Harley frowned. Could it be that Ollivander also knew some inside information?
"Mr. Ollivander, could you explain what mission I have to complete?" Harley immediately pressed.
Ollivander shook his head and didn't continue the topic. Instead, he pulled a tape measure with silver markings from his pocket.
"If Dumbledore hasn't explained it to you, then I have nothing to tell you either—now then, Miss Snape, which is your wand arm?"
Damn, another riddle-monger!
"...Right hand."
Harley said in an annoyed tone.
As if oblivious to Harley's annoyance, Ollivander let the tape measure take her measurements automatically while he searched through the boxes covering the walls.
"Every wand I make has a magical core. Just as no two people are exactly alike, no two wands are exactly the same."
"Dragon heartstring, Phoenix feather, and Unicorn hair—these are the three wand cores I use most often. Of course, that doesn't mean all the wand cores here are made of these three materials, nor does it mean other wandmakers use these same materials."
"For instance, Thiago Quintana would use White River Monster backspines as cores—unfortunately, that stingy old fellow didn't pass down the method for trapping White River Monsters, so after he passed away, no one could make wands with them anymore."
"Our Ollivander family's Phoenix feather wands are also unique in the wizarding world—phoenixes are just too rare. Currently, only I can manage to get Phoenix feathers through my connections. Sadly, I don't have many Phoenix feather wands here; Unicorn hair and Dragon heartstring are much easier to obtain..."
Ollivander suddenly started talking non-stop, rattling off a great deal about wandmaking at a speed that left Harley and Hermione unable to get a word in, forced to let him ramble on.
"Try this one first: Beechwood and Dragon heartstring—no, not this one!"
Scarcely two seconds after Harley took the wand, Ollivander rejected it. He snatched it from her hand, set it aside, and handed her another.
"It has to be Phoenix feather, after all. Maple and Phoenix feather—no, Merlin's pink eye patch, that's not right!"
Ollivander's frenzied appearance startled Hermione. She stepped forward to shield Harley, but Ollivander wasn't paying her any attention at all.
"Could it be Unicorn? The ceiling for that would be a bit... Miss Snape, try this one: Cherry wood and Unicorn hair, very springy—ah ha, a difficult customer indeed!"
Ollivander snatched the wand from Harley's hand again. Hermione couldn't understand why Ollivander seemed to get more excited as Harley's "failures" increased.
"Extraordinary, extraordinary... Ah, I have an unusual combination here, made three years ago at Dumbledore's suggestion—Ebony and Phoenix feather, eleven inches, a very idiosyncratic combination!"
(In the original work, holly symbolizes the need to overcome anger and impatience, which doesn't fit Harley's personality; here it is changed to Ebony—very suitable for casting all offensive magic and Transfiguration. Owners of Ebony wands are usually those who don't like to follow rules, are highly individualistic, or prefer to be outsiders. The Phoenix feather is still from Fawkes.)
Harley took the wand and immediately felt a surge of warmth to her fingertips.
She raised the wand high above her head, and a gentle miniature tornado mixed with water vapor formed a barrier around her.
"Yes, wonderful! This is the one!"
Ollivander stared at Harley with misty eyes and said, "I remember every wand I've ever sold. The Phoenix feather in the one you hold came from the same Phoenix as the core of the wand held by that great figure who stirred up a storm over a decade ago!"
"For better or worse, Miss Snape, you will achieve great things... the power of decision lies entirely in your hands!"
