Part One
Three days later, the wind changed.
It was subtle at first.
Training formations flickered.
Outer disciples reported distant fluctuations beyond sect boundaries.
The elders convened immediately.
"Heaven's light has consequences," the grey-robed elder said quietly.
Reports arrived before dusk.
A traveling cultivator sect from the eastern territories had altered course.
Their stated reason:
"Seeking the one marked by Heaven."
The phrase spread through the Inner Grounds like wildfire.
Marked.
Zheng Wen Te did not react outwardly when Lian brought the news.
"They are not coming to debate philosophy," she said.
"No."
"They believe Heaven's attention signifies selection."
"And selection implies possession," he finished.
"Yes."
He stood slowly.
"This is what fear looks like," he said.
She frowned.
"They are not afraid."
"They are," he replied. "Of missing opportunity."
Opportunity was more dangerous than hostility.
