Chapter 3 - Chapter Three: A new life, old shadows

Micah's ex—no, not her boyfriend, her ex—stood in the crowd, glaring. A whole year of silence. Not a single call when her mother fell ill. And now, he had the nerve to show up at her wedding. This guy wasn't just any guy he was her first love and boyfriend that was why she held one that long, anyway she's about to start a new life afresh so she must forget and disconnect herself from her past totally.

"I do," she whispered at the priest's question.

The witnesses clapped. Cameras flashed. Martin leaned forward, brushing his lips against hers for their first kiss as a married couple. Micah's stomach fluttered, though her heart still throbbed with a mix of guilt and relief.

An hour later, the celebration was in full swing. Micah was dancing lightly among the few guests when a firm hand grabbed her, will you let me go she said.

"Micah… where did we go wrong?" the voice demanded. "I thought you loved me! So why are you marrying another man?"

Her heart skipped, and she turned sharply. "After ignoring me for a year, how dare you talk about love, we dated for 2 years but immediately you got promoted and transferred to another state you changed no calls no message breaking up with me would have been better, see words mean nothing if actions don't match!"

Tears shimmered in his eyes, but hers were blindingly clear. The argument escalated—voices rising, hearts breaking—but the conclusion was inevitable.

"I… I can't," he said finally. "You're married now. I can't—"

"And you won't," Micah cut in, her voice steady. "Goodbye."

The air between them froze. He walked away. The past was buried. For now.

Back in her new home—her husband's home, not hers—Micah exhaled. The reality of being a wife, even a contract wife, hit her. She called Helen immediately.

"How's your mom?" she asked, voice trembling.

"She's fine!" Helen's cheerful voice made tears spring to Micah's eyes. "The surgery was a success. She's okay!"

Relief washed over her. For the first time in weeks, she felt hope.

She wandered through the house, noting every lavish detail. A new wardrobe had been prepared for her. "Mrs. Colin," the maid had said politely.

"Oh… okay. Thanks," Micah replied, her words sluggish from fatigue and emotion.

As she explored, her eyes caught a broken frame lying on the floor. Inside was the picture of a woman she didn't recognize.

"Who is this?" she asked the maid, curiosity tinged with unease.

The maid's hands trembled. "Mrs. Colin… I advise you… don't touch that frame. Mr. Colin gets… paranoid whenever he sees it."

Micah frowned. "What picture?"

Before the maid could answer, the sound of a door closing echoed behind her.

And she knew… this house held secrets.
