Chapter 259 - 257

Haruno stood in her mother's study, surrounded by the impenetrable darkness of the night beyond the windows.

Moonlight slipped through the blinds, casting long, narrow stripes across the floor like the bars of a prison cell.

Her mother sat behind the desk, holding a cup of tea that had long since gone cold. She hadn't taken a single sip.

Her expression was composed, but something churned beneath the surface of her eyes.

"Mother, I don't think I can keep doing this much longer."

Haruno spoke softly, her voice carrying exhaustion, helplessness, and a fear she could no longer conceal.

Her mother set down the cup and looked up at her daughter.

"What did Kirari do?"

Haruno drew a deep breath and recounted everything that had happened over the past few days.

She explained how Kirari had risked her own sister's life to make Ririka the second Ghost Wielder, increasing her importance in Genichi's eyes.

She told her how Yukino had discovered the laboratory's secret, how she had been captured, and how she had confronted Genichi.

Genichi hadn't become angry or blamed anyone, but Haruno could sense that his opinion of the Yukinoshita family had worsened.

"Genichi didn't say anything, but I could tell he was disappointed in Yukino."

Haruno's voice had grown hoarse.

"He thinks she's naive, foolish, and self-righteous. He thinks we failed to raise her properly."

Her mother's expression remained calm, but Haruno noticed her fingers tightening around the teacup.

Haruno continued, her voice growing quieter with every word.

"Kirari is insane. She'll never be satisfied with her current position. She'll do everything she can to replace us and take the Yukinoshita family's place in Genichi's heart. She has Ririka, so the two sisters can stand beside him together. What do I have? A younger sister who only drags me down."

Her mother was silent for a moment before speaking.

"You also have a mother."

Haruno went rigid.

She raised her head and stared at her mother, her eyes filled with shock and disbelief.

Her mother's expression remained composed, but a flash of grim determination passed through her eyes.

"Mother, you…"

"Do you think I haven't understood our situation?"

Her mother interrupted in the same calm tone she might have used to discuss the weather.

"From the day Genichi appeared, I knew the Yukinoshita family's fate had become bound to his. If he grows stronger, so do we. If he grows weaker, so do we. As long as he needs us, we have a place beside him. The moment he no longer needs us, we become nothing."

Haruno opened her mouth, but no sound emerged.

Her mother rose and walked to the window, turning her back on her daughter.

Moonlight fell across her body and cast a long shadow over the floor.

"Kirari has her sister. So do we."

Her voice was soft, but every word carried unmistakable conviction.

"If Kirari and Ririka can stand together, then so can a mother and daughter."

Haruno's tears finally fell.

She had considered this possibility from the moment Kirari appeared.

But she had always told herself it was their final card, one that could never be played unless they had no other choice.

Now that moment had arrived.

"Mother, are you certain?"

Haruno's voice trembled.

"Do you understand what this means? It means the three of us…"

"I understand."

Her mother turned to face her, her eyes filled with determination.

"It means all three of us will bind our futures to Genichi."

Haruno remembered how her mother had always taught her to be independent and strong, never relying on a man.

As she grew older, her mother had repeatedly warned her that the women of the Yukinoshita family had to maintain their dignity and never sell themselves for personal gain.

Now her mother was breaking every one of those rules.

"This isn't selling ourselves."

Her mother seemed to read her thoughts, and her voice softened.

"It's a choice. We're choosing Genichi. We're choosing to stand with him and share his fate. This isn't a transaction or an exchange of favors. We're doing it because we choose to."

Haruno took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down.

She knew her mother was right.

This wasn't surrender. It was a choice.

They would choose Genichi, place their trust in him, and entrust their futures to him.

Not solely for personal gain, and not solely out of fear. They needed him, and he needed them.

"What about Yukino?"

Haruno asked, "What are we going to do with her? She despises Genichi. She thinks he's a demon and a murderous monster. She'll never agree to this."

Her mother remained silent for a moment.

"Yukino doesn't need to approve of our decision. She only needs to accept the reality of it."

Haruno looked at her mother as a storm of emotions surged through her.

She remembered the fury on Yukino's face. She knew her sister wouldn't accept this, at least not now.

But she also knew Yukino had little control over the family's course.

Neither did Haruno.

Neither did their mother.

The women of the Yukinoshita family had never truly been free to choose their own path.

"I'll speak to Genichi."

Her mother turned and started toward the door.

"Mother!"

Haruno called after her.

Her mother stopped and looked back.

Haruno approached her and gently took her hand.

"We'll go together."

Her mother watched her in silence for a moment, then smiled.

It was a faint, gentle smile filled with relief, resignation, and an indescribable resolve.

"All right. Together."

Mother and daughter left the Yukinoshita residence and made their way to Genichi's laboratory.

The door stood slightly ajar, dim light spilling through the gap.

Haruno drew a deep breath and pushed it open.

Genichi sat at the workbench, pen in hand, writing something.

He raised his head and looked at the two women standing in the doorway, surprise flashing through his eyes.

"Haruno? Yukinoshita-san? What brings you here so late?"

Haruno entered the laboratory, her mother following close behind.

The door closed automatically with a heavy thud.

Haruno walked up to Genichi and looked him in the eye.

Her eyes were still red, but her gaze was unwavering.

"Genichi, we need to talk."

He set down his pen, leaned back in his chair, and studied her.

"About what?"

Haruno drew a deep breath.

"About us."

Genichi's gaze shifted between Haruno and her mother. A complicated light flickered in his eyes.

He seemed to have guessed what she meant, but said nothing and waited for her to continue.

"Kirari has Ririka, and the two of them can stand beside you together."

Haruno's voice was calm, though Genichi could hear the faint tremor beneath it.

"If the Momobami sisters can do that, then so can a mother and daughter."

Genichi had suspected as much, but hearing her actually say it still made the corner of his eye twitch.

He looked at her mother.

She stood behind Haruno with a composed expression, but something burned fiercely within her eyes.

"Are you certain?"

His voice was quiet.

Haruno's mother stepped forward until she stood beside her daughter.

She met Genichi's gaze without hesitation.

"I'm certain."

"You understand what this means."

"I do."

"You won't regret it?"

"I won't."

Genichi remained silent for a moment before smiling.

"I suppose I don't have any reason to refuse. Still, this is an incredibly reckless decision."

Haruno lowered her head without answering.

Her mother stepped closer and gently caressed Genichi's cheek.

"Perhaps. But it's better to be reckless than cowardly."

A glimmer passed through Genichi's eyes.

He took her hand and pulled her into his embrace.

She didn't resist. She merely rested against his chest and closed her eyes.

Haruno stood nearby, watching them as conflicting emotions surged within her.

Then she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Genichi from behind, pressing her cheek against his back.

His body stiffened for an instant before relaxing.

He placed his hand over hers and gently stroked her fingers.

"You two really are…"

He didn't finish, but Haruno heard the tenderness in his voice.

Outside, the moonlight cast their three shadows across the floor, merging them together.

Haruno closed her eyes, feeling Genichi's warmth, the beat of his heart, and the heat of his hand over hers.

She knew that from this moment onward, their fates would be inseparably bound to his.

They hadn't been forced or threatened.

They had made this choice themselves.

Her mother raised her head from Genichi's chest and looked at him.

"Genichi, promise me one thing."

"Go ahead."

"Don't abandon Yukino. She still has a great deal of growing up to do."

Genichi looked at her in silence for a moment before nodding.

"I promise. But my patience has its limits."

Her mother smiled, soft and gentle.

Then she rose onto her toes and placed a light kiss on his lips.
